Probably was a joke. I mean slopes in neighboring Finland would NOT have fulfilled the demands.
-
Now u're just plain being silly.
-
Toronto has a very nice skyline but the Olympic Games aren't won on pretty skylines.
-
Don't you think U know that. But if they are all going to deliver the Games' end right, therefore, really, the only difference is who can present the BEST ceremonies...and Japan, because of their more Asian culture, will of course, present the more boring shows. It's what separates the chaff from the grain---that's all I'm saying.
-
/\/\ God, it's worse than I remember it. 2020 CANNOT go to Tokyo again. Those will be the most boring ceremonies in ages.
-
Hamburg waterfront plan = Toronto waterfront plan = cancel each other out.
-
That's actually a pretty good opening.
-
Exactly. And if people won't have jobs, say 6 years down the road -- then aside from foreign sales (which are what almost 25% of Oly ticket sales), the remaining 75% would be very undersold.

Athens, but you see, as with some of your arguments--you most of the time come out a fence-sitter. In other words,"...it's this but it's not..." So it's hard to get a read on you. I guess I much prefer to read people who slant one way more strongly than another. The terribly balanced just leave me with...well, a little puzzled. Like we didn't really advance one step did we, IMHO?

The point is...Madrid/Spain just had the Olympics 20 years ago when things were going well with Spain. Now they ain't. Tokyo had it some 52 years ago; and they have well, a 'radioactive' problem to take care of. So that leaves a 3rd candidate whose economy is doing well; and has NEVER had the Games. The US was rejected for 2012 and 2016 because it just had 3 Olympic Games in the last 28 years (+ a few other factors). RIo got it, despite everything, because that part of the world, that continent, has never played host--and Rio had already knocked 3x, and has a booming economy to support back-to-back extravaganzas. Istanbul is knocking for the 5th time. If Istanbul had an economy worse than the PIGS; if it had hosted even just 30 years ago; if it had a small population of 25 million or less, if Istnabul weren't in such a strategic geo position as straddling TWO continents, then Istanbul would not be such a viable candidate. But Istanbul doesn't have those liabilities which both Madrid and Tokyo have. So, if you can't see the forest above the trees, then God help you.

Your argument makes NO sense whatsoever. Did you even read and comprehend the previous posts?

Interesting. A little over the top...and not for the faint-hearted!!
-
/\/\ Uh-huh. Right.

Oh I can understand that. I am tri-lingual. Sorry that u feel attacked, but we kinda tell it like it is here insofar as the chances of bidding cities. It is basically cities bidding-so it should be impersonal. And yes, people do get passionate in their support; but it's just being frank. We call it as we see it; if the language is a little strong, well I am sure other columnists and analysts around the world have also called it so. So, it wouldn't be the first time. Don't take it too personally. Develop a little objectivity.

Calla te!! Por eso Madrid va perdir -- muy arrogante y terco!
-
Oh baloney. Blow it out your ear!

If the overall cost of an Olympic Games is "...negligible in the overall fiscal picture, but will create jobs and heal the economy..."? Wait a minute. What kind of BS is this? It's talking out of two sides of the mouth. It's either it's injurious in the one end-through and through; or it is munificent on the other extreme. There might be a slight pick-up in the numbers early on but as already seen by Greece's example, the so-called 'necessary' expenditures can spiral and cause inexorable, larger damage. And of course, the spin doctors will spin it that way. At least Italy was prudent and self-disciplined enough to recognize this before going any farther. Whereas the Madrilenos are a stubborn, delusional lot--riding on this pipe dream that an Olympic Games will fix their overall malaise. Methinks that Castilian sun doth burn too much.
-
So obviously, the economic picture is a major Damocles's word over the Spanish candidacy. You can't deny that. The IOC would appear to be an extremely irresponsible party in giving a big spendthrift extravaganza to a society barely able to keep its house in order. Negligible or not in the total dollars-and-cents column, it would still be a gargantuan expense...partly as a matter of perception; and partly as reality. Up against the world's 3rd largest economy plus another one booming and maybe resolving some tricky political landmines in the process, it does seem Madrid picked a bad time to go for #3.
-
The big question with Madrid's candidacy vs. the other two from a strictly fiscal POV, is will a Games help cure Spain's problem, or will it exacerbate it? If it will be the latter, then of course, the IOC would want to steer clear of Spanish shores. And I think the IOC (or I would want to think so) is frightfully aware what a big financial burden their party is -- so that Damocles' sword hangs heavy over Madrid. I predict Madrid may garner no more than 25 votes in the first balloting.

Uhmmm, three wheelchair races were conducted in LA 1984 on the same sked and ticket brochure as the regular Games; similarly, 3 handicapped downhill races were ALSO conducted in Sarajevo on the regular sked. If they put their minds together and the will is there; it can be done. Maybe not necessarily concurrent, but they should compete BEFORE the regular O's.

So, when is the Vatican moving to Toronto?

Closing Ceremony
Shrek201 replied to Citius Altius Fortius's topic in London 2012 Ceremonies Discussions
Just found this!! A rehearsal for the Closing Ceremony: where 1,000 torchbearers will reunite (notice the int'l costumes -- there are even Elvis impersonators there) and burn a Viking ship. Catchy theme song! Pyromaniacs, eat your hearts out! -
Why are disabled and handicapped people running in the Torch relay when they are going to have their own Paralympic relay? This will happen eventually. It's really kinda stupid now to have the separate Para's afterwards. There is a lot of duplication in 2 separate events when they can be easily merged together. I mean 4 ceremonies, 2 casts, 2 sets of volunteers, etc.; and the Paras are always just an after-thought. To achieve greater respect & participation for the physically-challenged, they should be included in the regular Os even if they have their won separate events. Or at least in the 10 days before the regular O's begin. That's how I would do it if I were King!!

Wait...this /\/\/\ is from FEBRUARY 2012 yet. It is NOT from SportAccord in Quebec.
