  1. The US Olympics Committee has said all their attention is on 2024. They *have not* said they wouldn't be interested in 2028.
  2. Holy ****. While Americans don't have Canada or Canadians, some of us Massholes do hate the Canadiens. Who just fired Michel Therrien and hired Claude Juline. OK, totally off topic for LA2024. But this is still mind blowing.
  3. http://books.sipri.org/files/FS/SIPRIFS1604.pdf Global military global military spending in 2015: USA roughly $600b, rest of world roughly $1100b. You want to start a thread that the US spends way too much on the military, go ahead. But don't be saying "that's a fact" to things that aren't true.
  4. What's funny is that the vast majority of Americans either think very positively of Canada, or don't think about Canada much at all. Oh, sure we like to kid, but there's no real animosity towards Canada. Yet every now and then we get a Canadian on here who wants to rekindle the war of 1812 - which we won by the way If we get Calgary vs SLC for 2026, or Toronto vs LA for 2028, then we can have a discussion about the merits of hosting in one country or the other. But right now, the US has stepped up to run for 2024. This is a tread about that bid. Canada punted... so why the heck are you in here picking a fight??
  5. So I'm driving into Canada at one of the rural Vermont/Quebec borders and I get the sexiest border patrol guard ever. Maybe it was the French accent. She asked me where I'm going, how long I'll be in Canada, and then she.... sends me on my way???? I was ready to cry. That's it?There's nobody else here, you don't need to rush. You sure you don't need to interrogate me? Maybe a strip search or something... The worst Canada/US border crossing has traditionally be going into Washington from BC. The US guards are convinced everybody is trying to smuggle weed. Hopefully, that's relaxed a bit with changing laws in the US.
  6. One thing we know for sure is that the press will hammer PyeongChang for a number on minor issues. It's what the press does. For Sochi, the press (at least the American press) did story after story on the press village, including lack of doors on a few toilets, etc. For Rio, they did hundreds of stories on Zika (ignoring the fact that the games were going to take place in Winter when there are no mosquitos in Rio) and a picture of trash in the bay taken far away from where the actual games too place. But the games themselves went off with very few issues. Funny how you mention to positive aura of Vancouver. Do people not remember how the games were reported at the time? They were the glitch games, the cursed games. An athlete died during practice luge runs... there was a major screwup during the torch lighting in the opening ceremony... the torch location downtown was pathetic, there was no snow for some of the freestyle events, the alpine events were fogged in and hit with weather delays. Right now, PyeongChang has the potential for major transportation and housing problems. What's worse is that the pig-headed organizing committee is unwilling to address these issues (at least in public). Are they in denial?
  7. Already starting to see some ticket pop up on CoSport that weren't there on day 1.
  8. Grenoble is closer to Lyon than Whistler was to Vancouver. With the modern two-hub Olympic model, *distance* in not a barrier to Lyon hosting. As to the original question, any solid European bid would have won 2022. The question is what makes for a solid bid. Annacy? Yes. Jaca? Yes. But Sofia.... The only reason Almaty lost is that it's in Kazakhstan. From the IOC voter standpoint, is Bulgaria that much better than Kazakhstan?
  9. For whatever reasons, the Swiss people just don't seem interested in hosting the Olympics. Any bid is going to have a rough time.
  10. Pointless rant: The NFL blew it. Last year they went with "Superbowl 50". Did they have to bring back the Roman numerals?
  11. Trying to stay out of the political offshoots, but we need to be clear. There are very few " isolationist conservatives" in the US. That wing of the Republican Party was represented by Rand Paul in the last election, who got 0.21% o the Republican primary votes. Instead, Republican voters overwhelming picked a man who wants to know why we can't just go into the Mid East and take countries' oil. A man who openly campaigned for the end of the EU. Isolationist?? No.
  12. Random trivia.... bridal veils are probably the oldest tradition in the modern wedding. They originated in ancient Roman times.
  13. The first day that tickets go on sale is usually the toughest day to get tickets to popular events. Most are being held back for VIP's, the Olympic Family, expensive package deals, etc. Based on past years, I expect tickets to gradually trickle down to the individual ticket site. Sometimes CoSport will announce "we've got a new batch of tickets coming out on such and such date." Other times they just show up without notice. While there are no guarantees - especially with the mens gold metal match which is really popular - a persistent person will usually get tickets to what they want (though not necessarily the price-category they want). Given that ice-hockey isn't popular in South Korea, this will probably be the easiest year to get tickets. And if the NHL announces they aren't coming, I expect to see lots of tickets.
  14. No, they haven't. Learn the difference between a hajib and a burka.
  15. In case anyone's interested, there are still oodles of tickets to be had from CoSport. This is by far the least interest I've seen from the public for tickets.
  16. I like Costas well enough, but this is great news. Nobody should host this long. Need to get a fresh eye in there from time to time.
  17. The IOC and Bach in particular have shown nothing but love to Putin and the Sochi games.
  18. Are you done claiming that the USOC said they wouldn't bid for 2028?
  19. No, they didn't say that. They said they don't foresee bidding. "Won't bid" and "Don't foresee bidding" mean very different things.
  20. Congratulations... you've found the actual quote from the IOC rather than the reporters words. Let's compare: Actual IOC words: "The USOC board does not foresee pursuing any bid other than for the 2024 Games" Reporters words: "U.S. Olympic Committee puts full weight behind LA 2024 bid, ruling out 2028 as consolation prize" See the difference? "Does not foresee" does not mean "ruling out 2028 as a consolation prize." And neither means "won't bid for 2028".
  21. The LA Paper give quotes from the USOC document which do not say what the reporter says they say. I'm not trying to insult you. I'm encouraging you to read, learn and be smarter. Have you read the article? Have you seen the quotes? Do the quotes say what the reporter says they say?
