  1. The New Zealand team revealed their casual uniform a month or two ago, the ceremonial uniforms to be kept under wraps until just before the opening ceremony. Whereas the Germans have gone for the candy pride look, the Kiwis appear to have taken an x games / terrorist look. haha. I do like them though. They also revealed a *monsie* a onesie made from merino wool.
  2. Isn't this just the Coca Cola promotional theme music though. Much like how Coke puts out music for the Olympic Games now. I believe they had *Come Along Now* be Despina Vandi for Athens 2004 and Anywhere in the World by Katy B and Mark Ronson for London. I imagine an official world cup song/anthem will come out in due time a long with an official album.
  3. I've often thought this one of the stranger selections for a bid logo. Man and Pegasus sculpture by Carl Milles. I know it's one of the more famous sculptures in Stockholm, but it's not as iconic as other aspects of Stockholm. I remember pondering over it for some years before I discovered what it was all about. It' does fit in well with the classy field of 2004 logos, still, an od choice I would've thought.
  4. Here's a neat wee New Zealand Americas Cup tribute made by NZ's Virtual Eye, the video is billed as being from *the nation born from sailors to the best sailors of the world* - Kia Kaha San Francisco. Includes the Maori legend of NZ being fished up, through to SF. Quite impressive.
  5. Ohhhh, that would be horrible and such bad taste. It's still quite a tangible thing with people still physically suffering from those nuclear attacks. Aside from that, despite thinking the Beijing 2008 approach isn't one that would work for Tokyo, I do think a Japanese version of the segment using the Dragon Pillars would be quite neat. Just seeing all the colour of the likes of the Heian period etc etc
  6. It's an interesting though, how will they structure the ceremony. I too would be against a historical chronological structure, that's not to see a sense of order won't work . Athens showed a progression of art and thought, London a chronological history of *revolutions*, Beijing a history of famous inventions and breakthroughs . I think something abit more abstract like this might be the way to go with Tokyo. I sort of see something akin to Athens. Using a lot of key images as opposed to gigantic fields of people. Something like the solitary image of the *snow Queen* from the Nagano handover in Lillehammer, standing there with her kimono training down the stand, or Midori Ito rising up to light the Olympic cauldron. These are scenes that Japan can do well, and the simplicity really does fit into their culture. Even the scene from Memoirs of a Geisha where Sayuri performs her breakthrough dance performance, with the snow falling down. I'd like to see a few bits and pieces of these moments in the opening ceremony.
  7. Trouble is, they're in a lose lose situation surely. How many people were peaved off that Athens trollied out an all Greek artistic line up for the closing ceremony, saying noone had any idea who they were. Im sure if the Russians stacked the ceremonies with Russian stars they would get people saying they want Western people. Ya just can't win. Cher is a very odd request though , she is hardly relevant at the moment. I think she does have a track with Lady GaGa guesting on there, but that's about it. Scott Givens is in control though, so I suppose she would possibly fit in to a ceremony he was involved in. Have we heard about any Russians involved in a lead creative roll, or is Scott Givens taking up the head artistic director job for this one?
  8. And see the progress of the hole. hahaha, that's if they have one - Im sure they do.
  9. I've been quite surprised at how much follow up in the media there has been to the worry that Oracle may try to do some damage with aggressive tactics . Team NZ has come out saying that if they need to they will back off and sacrifice a race . Im not going to be at all surprised if they pick up a couple over the next few days, and that seems to be the opinion in some of the polls on NZ media websites.
  10. It certainly has been a nice outlook that we've been getting every day with the bridge, Alcatraz and the skyline. As a side note, if NZ does win this Cup, I think we can possibly expect to see some kind of lead up event being held in Dubai as well - due to the heavy sponsorship from Emirates. I know way back there was talk by some within Dubai that they could host a defense if ETNZ won, however that was quickly guzumped by the NZ Govt and Team New Zealand.
  11. Haha, no no, in certain applications (especially in mono-colour) I do like the PC2018 logo. The Canadians do like sticking maple leaves in almost every logo they have ever designed, so I was very surprised we didn't get a single one in the Vancouver official logo.
  12. I think Rome 2004 and Helsinki 2006 would be my favourite Olympic bid logos. I'd agree with you about the Sion 2006 bid logo though, it was a good piece of branding, in addition to being a good stand alone logo.
  13. Oh there is certainly going to be a lot of life left in this team and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they picked up a race or two , but short of mishap, I don't see them doing it enough to win. I'd hope that view doesn't come in to play, let's hope if he was instructed to do such a thing, that he would remember the huge outpouring of generosity that he and his Young Australia crew were given by the Auckland public back in 2000. THey turned up to the regatta flat broke and I remember quite clearly how the NZ public really did take them to heart, donations of groceries were being delivered to their base every day, outfitted with new shoes, bikes to get around the village etc etc. I think Spithall is too good a sailor to do something like that ........ I hope.
  14. I'd say Auckland can most certainly be bothered. It is whatever happens, and always will be, the City of Sails. The support of Team New Zealand has ramped up over the last month, and the visuals of all those Kiwis who have gone over to SF is amazing, they are flooding the piers. So most certainly would be an Auckland hosting if the cup is won, also the factor is that officially Team New Zealand is racing this under the flag of the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron (which is an Auckland Yacht Club). In any case, I'd be against a defense in Canterbury. I really just don't see how it would make any sense taking an event like the Americas Cup away from the bulk of the population and our boat building industry. While the Viaduct has been turned in to an entertainment precinct , void of those cup bases, there is a large development plan for the Auckland waterfront, an America's Cup will be a fantastic opportunity to speed up some of the process. The current favourites for development are a Wynyard Point development, or an extension of Halsey Street near the Viaduct Events Centre, There are some noises of using Captain Cook Wharf, which would take it further into the cbd, but I don't see that happening. Queens Wharf would again be used as a major entertainment hub around Shed 10 and the Cloud, much like during the RWC. I'd go for Wynyard Wharf. I think going over the other side of Wynyard Point is too soon for a defence, you'd have to go through a still developing area, whereas Wynyard wharf would be still in good distance to North Wharf. Halsey Street would be an attractive option, but I know development plans for that are still a few decades away. I don't know how many people here have ventured to Auckland lately, but the area past Te Wero Island and into The Wynyard Quarter is really quite nice, a different feel to the Viaduct Basin. Some great restaurants along North Wharf (the RWC was the event which sped up this development), and some neat little laneway areas being developed as well. The ASB band recently opened up their hq down there, so there is some good architecture going around that area too. What format the Cup will take, again, it's still up in the air. I know the Oracle team want to start up a franchise based annual world series - however Team New Zealand hasn't come out in favour of this (nor have they dismissed the idea). Here's a good overview of the different areas of Waterfront Auckland
  15. I really don't think any of the bid logos have been better than the actual Games time logo. There are a few that were possibly better from an artistic point of view (Beijing) or from a reasoning point of view (the Torino bid logo had a nice serene back story to it), but the eventual Games logos worked better as a good hardy visual mark that is needed for an event like the Olympics. The Sochi bid logo for instance looks nicer than the Olympic logo, but I feel it would have been too wishy washy for an Olympic logo, whereas the wordmark logo they went for seems to be standing pretty firm. I'd probably say the same for Beijing, and I think even the PC2018 logo will go that way too.
  16. Melbourne was my favourite Commonwealth Games. However, I think where Manchester would win in alot of peoples eyes, is that it is what a Commonwealth Games *should* be. I guess a lot of people saw that Melbourne was just too big, it was almost not a Commonwealth Games, but an almost Olympics. So I suppose Manchester is seen as *perfection* in that it had the perfect mix. I don't think anyone could doubt the technical brilliance of Melbourne, or the general vibe to be honest , it was hosted by an amazing city which is sports mad. I guess it's that if you were looking at previous hosts to produce a template to give to future hosts - maybe Manchester is what you would go towards.
  17. Mmmm, completely legal tactic, but very disappointing, but I guess they gotta do what they gotta do. Jebus though, those Oracle boys looked like their mother and 6 of her best friends had just been run over by a trolley bus. They were so dejected, which of course they should be. Im sure they'll come back in some form, I just think they may have a bit too much work to do though.
  18. Im guessing the intersecting lines and current England 2015 wordmark are the official ones of the tournament going forward? Must say it's a wee bit disappointing compared to the NZ2011 Mangopare hammerhead shark design look they used.
  19. Ahhhh false false false. Most of the trolling of the past 2 weeks have been from Madrid supporters Im afraid.
  20. Nope. E mailed them before and they are still in negotiations.
  21. I really think one of the keys that SF has lacked, is the fact that the local populous has struggled to engage with the home team, and that is what made the 2 Cups held in Auckland go down so well. I don't think alot of internationals quite understand that despite all of the international sponsors, Team New Zealand is very much a Kiwi team (I think all bar a couple of Aussies). That runs from the grunters grinding, the afterguard, the boat builders etc etc. Add to that , that back in the LV Cup in Auckland the public really took to the charismatic Italians, the support for them was imense. For this Defense to have gone off, the locals needed to see a red white and blue team to support, when in actual fact, Oracle is going to be skippered by an Aussie (with a Brit as a back up), is lead by a Kiwi CEO, and whose team is made up of international sailors. I think there's only maybe 2 Americans on the first boat. Take it away from the Billionaire, and give the public something to believe in, it will help the regatta big time. Which is why whoever wins next time, really does need to introduce a nationality rule on the boats. Im sure cup the start of the Cup the atmosphere will rev up to a degree, but apart from the spectacle of the racing, why would anyone want to support Larry Ellison? Gees, at least Team Dennis Connor was far more believable.
  22. I really don't mind the video, I guess it's very Japanese with the music being *Sukiyaki*. If it was the only promo video it's bad, but it shows a different less polished side to the bid, showing a mobilization of the public (which it must be said has really worked this time round for Tokyo).
  23. Surely now it's time for naughty boy Sandor Earl to quit football and be a full time (naked) model??? haha

  24. The New Zealand Herald today had a short piece on possible sites for a future Americas Cup Defence if TNZ was successful. Whilst I agree with Alex that a mega facility akin to the Viaduct Harbour of 2000/2003 would not be needed again, I can't help but think that due to Auckland's reputation for arsing about in development, we do have to take the opportunity of major events when they come, to regenerate (or at least quicken the speed of regeneration plans) parts of our waterfront. Wynyard Quarter was always going to be done, but I think the RWC 2011 certainly helped us get that stage done alot quicker. Of course, it's also worth thinking about what another AmCup would be like in San Fran. What would be done differently. Surely both Auckland and San Fran will revert back to the mono hulls though, and an effort made to encourage more challengers.
  25. Norway may be relatively peaceful (and a lovely country it is indeed.... all be it extremely expensive), however often with those countries (I guess you'd include the Sweden, Iceland and New Zealand's of the world in this) you also get an extremely low tolerance of anything disturbing that peace. So the IOC would most likely have to encounter and larger than usual element of public protest, orderly protest, but protest none the less. Ps, the whales probably don't think Norway is too peaceful. lol Still, would certainly be one of my picks for another Olympic Winter Games in the near future if I could go anywhere.
