  1. I think most hosts do a one year anniversary celebration of their games (and then significant anniversaries - 5 years, 10 years, 25 years etc) after that. So not really an innovation. Sydney had big celebrations planned for September 15 2001. But then 9/11 happened four days before, so it became a much smaller, muted affair.
  2. Jokes about croc-dodging in Rockhampton aside (and there’ll be plenty of them over the next nine years), could we make a virtue of them and have a crocodile as the official mascot? Would be pretty iconic and soooooo Queensland. Could even rope in Bindi and Robert Irwin to introduce it, and be co-faces of the games. Pity Roy and HG are getting a bit long in the tooth. It’d be nce if they can hang around till 2032. If not an offical ascot, I’m sure THEY would make one our unofficial mascot, the 2032 answer to Fatso.
  3. I was actually trying to separate the NIMBYs from the green space advocates. My natural sympathies would lean towards green space preservation. But the stadium is needed and it appears there weren’t many other viable options. I’ll delay judgement unbuilt we see how that all plays out. As for he indigenous aspect, I was aware it was a significant site, known to them as Barrambin, but apparently it’s also a location for a number of massacre incidents. The Guardian’s starting to focus on the indigenous aspect: Queensland plans to build 2032 Olympics stadium on significant Indigenous site The broken promise aspect seems to be the angle a lot of the headlines and comments the media’s focussing this morning. It was heavily drowned out though by Federal Budget coverage - it was brought down yesterday ahead of an election expected to be called within weeks.
  4. Looks a fair enough plan. Can’t fault much. The stadium was needed, and I like the idea of a new Aquatics Centre rather than dropping in a temporary pool in Brisbane Live. And I’m on board with farming off more events to the regions - that’s in keeping with the original spirit of its bid pitch (even if building such major new venues in Brisbane - as needed as they are - isn’t). It’s not going to silence the controversy, though. Victoria Park will inevitably become a lightning rod for NIMBYs, green space supporters and indigenous activists.

  6. *WARNING/DISCLAIMER: The following post contains links to an Inside The Games article, and should be evaluated within the context of that publication’s recent ownership and editorial changes Okay, the caveat over, ITG today reports: Coventry commits to Olympic bid process review Which seems to be based on one remark she made: The newly elected president of the IOC has taken a measured approach to India's 2036 Summer Games candidacy. "I believe we should involve the membership in the selection of the future host and I have some ideas that I may share next week," she advanced in her post-vote press conference. Hardly committal. And why didn’t she suggst such during her campaign? But I guess we’ll see what she actually does. I might even forgive her some of her many shortcomings if she does bring back some sort of open bidding.
  7. No. That was the original, your chère grand pere, Pierre de Coubertin, who was much younger, 33, when he became IOC president in 1896.
  8. Marina gets it So it’s victory for Kirsty Coventry in the IOC elections. Who says cards with a rigged deck isn’t an Olympic sport?
  9. The toll starts First migrant worker dies building a World Cup stadium in Saudi Arabia
  10. Yep, that’s about it. You had a good run, GamesBids… Ugh!
  11. Jens at The Inquisitor has posted his eve of vote predictions, and basically puts it down to a two-horse race between Juanito and… Kirsty. La noche de las noches I don’t think it’s paywalled, but I’ll put it below in spoilers if you want to read. It’s got bullet points and formatting and all!!!
  12. Who’s tiptoeing? I thought it was pretty clear from Week 1.
  13. This will get interesting Imane Khelif hits back at Donald Trump and targets Olympic gold defence in LA
  14. Meh, still think it’s overkill. It’d be more fitting if they dug up Baron PdC’s heart each time and each took a bite out of it… or maybe that should be the initiation ceremony for each new president…
  15. ‘Seb is a leader’: Farah, Bolt and Grey-Thompson back Coe for IOC president Pity Farah, Bolt and Grey-Thompson don’t vote…
  16. Bit overkill to have an OC for an IOC session IMO. Feeds their grandiosity. But maybe it’ll start a trend. Can’t wait for the OC to the next Tesla AGM
  17. Not the sort of thing I’d get up at 1am here for. Be plenty enough to digest over breakfast in the morning.
  18. Four days and counting… And on The Inquisitor, Jens launches into another tirade on the unsuitability of Kirsty: Tommy's Girl Full text of that below in the spoiler tag: And on ITG, they’re hyping up eve-of-vote “touchy feely” allegations against her Kirsty Coventry, harassment allegations surface
  19. Thought this was probably more relevant as a thread now that Germany and the DOSB seem to be abandoning any efforts to bid for 2036 and are openly looking towards 2040. Germany 2040 Games bid gathering steam Parsons endorses German 2040 bid
  20. Probably time to retire this thread now that Germany seems to be focussing now on 2040 Germany 2040 Games bid gathering steam Parsons endorses German 2040 bid Started a new thread for 2040 here:
  21. And over on The Inquirer, Jens Weinreich publishes his latest Presidential Bid Index: IOC Presidential Index (III): Samaranch, the next chapter in which he continues his assessment of Kirsty as a dumb blonde and puppet, and says Slick Seb slipped up in his January live presentation and put the momentum squarely on El Kid… There is no question that Samaranch gave a more convincing performance than Sebastian Coe. That was surprising. It may have been because Coe felt too confident and overdid it that morning with additional appointments. Regardless, it can no longer be changed. When it mattered, Samaranch made a stylish Olympic appearance. Coe, on the other hand, the Olympic champion, was surprisingly weak, well below his level. Let's not forget: it was the only appearance of the candidates before the session. There will be no more such presentations in Greece next week. It is primarily the Lausanne session and the world powers behind Samaranch that have catapulted him from last place to second place in the Olympic Presidential Index. (that’s the juicy parts that I can access. There’s more, but Jens charges a pretty penny for full access to his manifestos)
