    lol USA out.

And where was Canada when all this went down (just teasing:D)?

The USA did all its supporters a favor by crashing out.  I am certain that, based on the way this team played during this cycle, an embarrassing group stage elimination was inevitable.  Having qualified repeatedly, this group probably felt entitled to qualification and felt no need to make any sort of effort. Their complacency, and the insufferable smugness of coach Arena, bit them in the backside.

The World Cup is the World Cup, with or without the USA.  It will be spectacular, and it just might make me forget about turning 50 in the middle of the tournament.

  2. That seems to continue a recent trend. Since the expansion to 32 teams in 1998, you have had 20 teams return from 1998 to 2002, 2002 to 2006, and 2006 to 2010. However you had 25 teams from 2010 return in 2014.  As of now,  the only 2014 teams mathematically eliminated are two you mentioned, Cameroon and Algeria, plus Ecuador.  Additionally, there have been only one debutante in each of the last two World Cups (Slovakia 2010, and Bosnia-Herzegovina 2014).

It should be noted that there are still 19 spots to be claimed and there are a number of nations not present in 2014 who have a chance to qualify.

I commend your perseverance in regards to these pieces of music. I wish I knew more of the titles myself. I must have watched that ceremony a hundred times while I was still on my buzz from attending the Games, but for the longest time I didn't know many of the titles myself. I loved Santorini, but it took until 2004 before I found out what it's title was and who composed it. Don't get discouraged, sometimes you get lucky and just stumble unto these things when you least expect it, especially in the internet age.

Who would have imagined that, when I wrote this post seven years ago, we would have an Olympic Channel where you could watch the opening ceremonies (at least from 1988 on) without commentary (I think 2016 has the commentary though).  Some of the other titles I was able to uncover by using the Shazam app on my phone include:

    French National Defile March https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vU6L_7IgcY

    Crown Imperial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WMrQe87gRk

    Coronation March https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=coronation+march+tchaikovsky

    Hands Across the Sea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnlZuUptyHw

    Stars and Stripes Forever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mRn9chmRAY

    Washington Post March https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzIH7vytjEE

There are others that Shazam cannot identify.

I do not know if any of the other posters from 2010 still visit here, but I hope this proves helpful if they hadn't found this info since then.

  4. The mass exodus is completely understandable given that many threads have degenerated into trolling, bickering, and belittling.  It has become incredibly difficult to conduct an intelligent conversation about anything Olympic, and the lack of opportunities to discuss the bid process will not help.  Also, given the fact that we do not have many regulars residing in the next few host countries means that the build-up to the Games will likely pale to past Games.

  5. No argument here. But he stepped up when the league was founded and, along with Lamar Hunt and Philip Anschutz. keep it going when it looked as if the league would go under after the 2001 season.  It was also he who persuaded Don Garber to leave the NFL and become MLS Commissioner, another important reason the league has made it to 22 seasons. Perhaps if the Revs were not the Buffalo Bills of MLS, having fallen short in all four MLS Cup appearances, Kraft would be thought of more favorably.

  6. I'll watch most days, but with a healthy dose of skepticism. I wasn't pleased with Gatlin's win. He may be clean now, but I'll never really be able to believe it. Almaz Ayana's obliteration of the field in the women's 10,000 also doesn't sit right with me.  She only races a handful of times and wins handily. Are her infrequent appearances because she is hiding something?

Why do I watch? Because I'll see an athlete from the Northern Mariana Islands get left in the dust, which causes me to feel sorry for them, only to find out that they actually set a personal best, and I feel an admiration for them because they did their best and did it better than ever before.

I can understand the antipathy on these boards about the event. Why get too excited about a competition that recently has been a giant fraud.

  7. Thanks for the clarification firstin08.

I think a lot of us have our own ideas on how to improve the Games, such as Stryker's comments above.  I recently posted my ideas on another site recently which included the elimination of all team sports, all the additions to the 2016 and 2020 program, and sports whose venues leave a questionable legacy. I mentioned canoe/kayak slalom as an example (this was before I realized that some cities have made good use of their slalom venues. I also kicked weightlifting out for obvious reasons.  These changes would have cut the number of venues needed at Rio by 13 and would have put the number of athletes at 8000. Of course this will never happen,

  8. Well, DISH customers like me are out of luck. I vented a little on DISH on various social media, but now I just don't seem to care whether I have it or not.  Probably because I realized I acted the same way about Universal Sports, I eventually got it and then hardly watched it. I'll stick with the online version with its more worldly focus.
