  1. I'm seeing a conflict on the first day. The OC will be broadcast on NBC on tape delay (of course) at 8pm EDT, which is an hour and a half after the competition day has started Saturday in Beijing (actually Hong Kong, the dressage portion of the equestrian eventing competition starts at 6:30). While I'm not that interested in dressage, there are other sports going on shortly thereafter. The conflict lies in being able to watch the competition online without the website spoiling the details of the ceremony before I have the opportunity to see it for myself. I hope you don't have to go to the main page at NBCOlympics.com to access the online feed. By the way, I guess I qualify as a crackhead too. And proud of it.
  2. Wasn't it the female athletes from Lesotho who marched in topless during the 2006 Commonwealth Games OC?
  3. How did we ever survive on only 160-170 hours of coverage.
  4. jiejie, I really enjoy your reviews of the venues, they are far more interesting and informative than anyone would get in any official publication. Thanks for the good work and I hope you get the chance to post more of them.
  5. Yes, the human-rights issues were always something to be concerned with, but one would have thought China might be a little more careful to make sure they did not become too hot of a topic in the build-up, given the importance of the Games as a national PR project. I never expected them to change and after the Games are over, it will go back to being business as usual. It is a despicable regime. My reflections in this post were a reference to the belief that these Games were to be a strict, totlitarian-run enterprise that would tolerate nothing interfering with their successful organization and staging, unlike Greece where bureaucratic delays hampered the organization on a constant basis.
  6. when it seemed like our biggest concerns were about the roof being in place over the Olympic Stadium and security and many people (myself included) were thinking how things would be much easier heading into Beijing ? Boy do I feel like an idiot.
  7. The 25th of August can't come soon enough. I'm ready to get Beijing 2008 done and over with.
  8. I have to laugh at some of the posts around the internet relating to the issue, mostly regarding the assigning of the blame for awarding the Games to Beijing and suggestions to solve the problem. My favorites: 1)Some people actually believe the decision to award the Games to Beijing was made by President Bush. 2)Some people seem to believe we can relocate the Games on 4 months notice. One poster suggested that there are "plenty of Olympic stadiums around the world," as if there is nothing to hosting an Olympics but opening the gates and holding athletic contests. I understand not everyone understands the Olympics the way we do here, but some people come off as simple-minded idiots.
  9. If it meant all live coverage and no commercials, I would gladly pay.
  10. Besides Baron, I was 16 years old at the time and I didn't give a care what sponsors might have thought.
  11. I think about those NBC ratings from 2000 and I debate what really was the cause for the less than expected numbers. Was it the time difference and the virtually complete tape-delayed coverage (save for the mens basketball final)? Was it the fact that the games were in September when the kids are back in school and the sports calendar is very crowded? A combination of both perhaps? As for the volleyball final in Athens, I remember watching it late in the afternoon coverage. NBC then showed the bronze medal game prior to the closing ceremony, which felt strange as we are accustomed to seeing the bronze medal game first. I like those last day features, the final day of the Games is usually one of the lightest in terms of events and you need some filler material. Especially so this year since the marathon will be shown live Saturday night, thats 2.5 hours you need to fill on Sunday.
  12. It was the first summer games that I was going to be able to follow with any depth. I sat down to watch the Olympic Games as was treated to the National Sports Festival. Predictable, yes, given the absence of the majority of the Soviet-bloc, but the way the ABC announcers carried on they might just have well worn USA team uniforms. Some of us do care about all the athletes and all the nations, and not just our own. They are no less Olympian than the much more heralded stars.
  13. I do remember those Saudi ads. That's actually remarkable because I tuned out the 84 games after a few days because of ABC's less than objective presentation.
  14. Looks like we can add yet another to the NBC Olympic family of networks. http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/C....html?rssid=193
  15. My favorite was the Bank of America ads run in 2002 showing employees performing winter Olympic disciplines, I really liked the speed skater who went straight into the wall and over. My least favorite, also from 2002, were the Chevrolet ads with the two guys, among other stunts, trying to get Michelle Kwan to end her routine in a way that the Chevy logo gets noticed behind her. i wonder if that inspired that idiot with his Golden Palace ads at venues and then disrupting the closing ceremony at Torino.
  16. Those pictograms can be confusing. I had tickets to handball in Atlanta, but almost went to table tennis instead because the pictograms looked similar at first glance.
  17. I believe I read where IOC regulations now require all new NOCs to represent independent states, no more territories or dependencies.
  18. Not with NBC paying the bulk of the TV rights revenue. It will probably start around 9pm EST (6pm PST).
  19. Well, the female gymnasts would look about the same size as if they were on TV.
  20. Doesn't really matter to me, they don't ship to the US. It's getting to be a common theme, to get an Olympic T-shirt you have to go to the USOC's online store where the selection is pathetic. The Vancouver website is promising a store for US consumers coming soon, which isn't usually anytime soon.
  21. Actually Switzerland did boycott the Melbourne Games, but since they took part in the earlier equestrian events in Stockholm, they do count as having participated in every Games.
  22. I believe that the only way there would be a boycott of the Games would be if China committed some act of aggression against Taiwan or some other ill-advised political manuver.
  23. It's going to be tricky for us with both live and tape-delayed coverage. For instance, there might be something you want to watch live on the internet, but visiting the website at that time may reveal the result of a major tape-delayed event you wish to watch that evening in prime-time.
  24. http://www.nbcumv.com/release_detail.nbc/s...rsalannoun.html This is great news for those of us who put life on hold during the Games.
