Rio de Janeiro 2016 Ceremonies.
alphamale86 replied to Alexjc's topic in Rio 2016 Ceremonies Discussions
I can honestly say we have more pictures from this opening ceremony rehearsals than I'v seen from any other yet I have no idea what the ceremony is about London we knew almost ever segment and what is was trying to portray by the time the curtain rose on the OC this time around I have no clue what to expect even though we are seeing so much. I'm getting excited for the show now. and even more so for the lighting of this cauldron than any other. -

My thoughts on this are as follows I completely understand where NBC is coming from. No other network around the globe is paying anywhere near the amount NBC is paying to air the games. The IOC has always know the US market is their bread and butter. So if US viewers tune out at the halfway mark of the OC then that's not good for the IOC either. However, having said that. If I were Rio and the IOC there is no way in HELL I would allow for special treatment for one country when we established this rule of thumb decades ago in order to fairly recognize each host country. I think NBC is actually being highly insensitive right now, could you imagine if Russia had made a similar request in an American hosted games? They already won the coup to deny Doha the ability to even bid for 2024 when they proposed the time change this is just NBC being extra now. -

I understand that fact but I still like the fact that the nights highest honor should go to a person who competed. Instead of a "who" moment? And I am not saying who as in the international audience I am talking about the local audience. I am sure Londoner's felt proud of those kids but everyone in that stadium probably was like who are these people? Ok Now I don't want to downplay Rio's abilities but with 1 week to go this is beyond behind schedule for landscaping but then again it is possible to turn a stadium into a concert hall and then into a football field over night so I guess this too is possible. I just hope they have enough time to fully test the thing. -

I loved the Doha cauldron design for the stadium. it was most dramatic and kept you in suspense even after it was lit. when it started to move I remember audibly gasping. To me there is no such thing as a "vulgar cauldron." It's a cauldron. It's only purpose is to be the focal point, the finale, the crescendo, so in my opinion it has to be grand, or creative, or innovative. Makes people not only want to stay to the end but makes it worth staying to the end of the ceremony. If we are honest with ourselves Barcelona's cauldron would have been a let done had they not lit it with the archer. Seoul would have been completely uninteresting hadn't the doves been incinerated and the only thing that made the lighting of Atlanta exciting was Ali, cause that sure was a pointless exercise. Sydney got it right and even the glitch added to the drama. To me the best lighting on record. It had three distinct phases, The water lighting, the ascent and the rising on the podium. Even the strong contrast of fire and water and the lights under the water fall turning from blue to gold after the cauldron passed over it. Perfect! I was a bit disappointed at Athens but every time I re-watch it the music is so dramatic that it makes me like it more and more each time. Design wise Beijing had a full concept incorporating the scroll into the stadium as it was a focal unifying motif of the OC. I actually thought it was beautiful, but am I the only one who thought Li Ning ran for too long? I mean they already had 7 runners taking it around the stadium for almost 10 minutes then he took another 4 minutes in the air. I just felt after he flew up we lost a bit of the excitement and novelty after the first minute and a half of him running. London was charmingly beautiful but I am not a fan of giving none olympians the chance to light the cauldron. We don't know if those kids will stay with their sport. They might have quit 2 years later, so that was a let down even though the cauldron itself provided the beauty -

What I don't get about it is that it doesn't look specifically designed for the games. Like they just went into his shop and saw that one from Youtube and said we want that one. Get what I am saying. Usually the cauldron is specially designed for the olympics not just bought at Cauldrons'R'Us. Hopefully this is a decoy or at most part of the lighting mechanism. It's beautiful none the less but I mean for god's sake they spent money to fabricate the Pan Am cauldron from scratch they can at least do that for the Olympics. -

What is everyone complaining about? RELAX!!! Give Rio some space. Beijing completely messed all of you up when it comes to expectations of an opening ceremony. I remember the organizers of London were definitely trying to lower expectations of the OC because Beijing was so incredulous. That's why they adopted the approach of reveal as much as you can before air time in order to temper expectations. Rio already told you all, this is not going to be the budget of London or Beijing so calm down. To be honest I feel where Rio will try to capitalize is on pure human energy. If you've ever been to Rio you'll know exactly what I am talking about. There is a life, an energy to that city that can not be replicated the vibrancy of the people is almost tangible. From the pictures of the performers I can tell in their faces that they definitely tapped into that. now it is to see whether it comes across like that on tv -

Sochi didn't try to hide the cauldron and if we truly look at it Sydney was the first one to truly have a we don't know what it looks like or how it would be lit till the last moment. Being and London as well but for the most part we always know what the cauldron looks like in advance. I'm interested in seeing the kinetic effect. How it moves and how they light it. I hat when fireworks light the cauldron a la Sochi, with one exception Torino, That was spectacular, But I find direct contact, in my opinion makes the entire torch relay worth it. Cause otherwise The priestess practiced for days lighting this damn light from the parabolic mirror, then you run all the way around the world guarding this flame and the flame doesn't even light the cauldron. I want Rio to do well with the OC I just have a feeling everything will go downhill after that. -

SO TRUE! Terrorism can happen anywhere and it is usually from an outside cell of society but when you have civil protests gaining steam that's more likely to doom a bid than Terrorism. The US has a wave of dissatisfaction from the general public right now. To be honest the elections in november and the results there after will have a greater impact and a longer reaching impression on the 2024 decision next year than terrorism.- 4,791 replies

BidWeek: So… Why Did The IOC Pick Rio To Host the Olympics?
alphamale86 replied to GBModerator's topic in GB Newswire
Yeah I was confused as to why the article was written but then I had some friends ask me why Rio was chosen recently and I had to explain what happened 7 years ago. my points in my early posts were just to show now that things have changed it's going to manifest itself differently than in previous cities. -
BidWeek: So… Why Did The IOC Pick Rio To Host the Olympics?
alphamale86 replied to GBModerator's topic in GB Newswire
I think what you are missing is that most of the complaints from Sochi and Beijing came from outside of the country meaning yes there were internal protests but they were easily crushed by authoritarian governments. Those governments could easily blind the viewer with facades funded by billions of dollars, intimidate the local populations with military might. Brazil can't do that. There is going to be a remarkable difference between Sochi/ Beijing and Rio. Beijing's and Sochi's Governor wasn't telling the world we are in an economics state of emergency, Beijing's and Sochi's police force wasn't telling the world welcome to hell. Russia and China's president was no where near being impeached much less actually deposed like Dilma 2 months before the games. Though we all love to say yeah the games will come off without a hitch like we usually do I am simply saying, as a person born from in the developing world Rio and the climate to which they are hosting the games in are unlike that of any games in recent memory due to the fact that most of the opposition to the games are coming from within. The people the government the police have all lost confidence in the games. It's not like Russia and China where most of the general public felt it was a badge of national pride and the government was using it as a showpiece to impress. Brazil will like to be so far away from these games at this time and of course it's a case hindsight but the issues they will face after this will be more intense that that of China and Russia who had the money to keep rolling after the games left. -
This terrorism crap needs to stop. My heart goes out to the French people again for this yet another attack. Hoping for the safety of our French Gamesbids brothers and sisters and their families

BidWeek: So… Why Did The IOC Pick Rio To Host the Olympics?
alphamale86 replied to GBModerator's topic in GB Newswire
I definitely agree with the article on that point. You can only award the games based on what is known at the time. Even I was rooting for a Rio games not knowing what would happen. However I feel like the criticism and concern over Rio is not similar to that of Sochi London and Beijing. Beijing's concern was mostly over Human rights and pollution. The government on the other hand was willing to throw billions of dollars at the games, use it's military force to crush protesters, and a general public who sadly was coerced into conforming with the show of being excited for the games. Russia, same thing. Billions of dollars population and government who want to prove a point to the world. Rio compared to those other cities has a very vocal population in opposition to the games and when you throw in the fact that even the government of Rio is calling states of emergency for the games and the cops are holding banners saying welcome to hell. body parts washing up at the venues. teams already being mugged at gunpoint, you have to admit it's a different climate compared to those other cities. Hopefully they'll be able to pull it off but is that what we really want for this country? Hold it together just long enough to pull off the games then the world leaves and your country collapses and no one cares because the games are done? -
Your're forgetting one thing. The Market! Copa was a success because it made the most money of any Copa Tournament and records of attendance, in a market that admittedly doesn't follow soccer. played in stadiums that seat 100 thousand plus people for American football games. If this were held in other countries most of the stadiums would have been smaller anyway allowing for it to look packed. For a football tournament held in the states Copa did amazingly well. There is no getting around that. Yes the tickets we expensive but people still bought it and made it the most financially successful Copa which when you look at the bottom line of hosting any major event, it's did we make money and what was the lasting impression. Copa didn't have the transportation issues France had even though Copa was spread out over a larger country and like France the US provided a safe environment. To be honest the issue here is Paris is the front runner, and prior to Euros we were all saying Euros is a bigger deal to host than anything that LA has hosted recently so if that's the case then France needed to hit this out of the park as the front runner, cause the expectations are high. Not saying Euros was a failure but it wasn't anything to write home about. I was there, even people in France were blah about it only until the french team made it to the finals. So if the event that you were boasting about was just "ok" then if I'm an IOC member, I may not jump ship just yet on Paris but I'd definitely start looking at the other bids a bit more closely especially when Copa broke so many records for that tournament. This cycle is a game of expectations. France has been the deficit front runner from the start so people expect them to show up. La came in late to the process as the back up to Boston. So folks are already looking at them like you weren't even the first choice for the US why should we chose you now? But quite frankly a lot of things have been going in LA's favor and Paris to me has been making some strange moves for a city that should in essence be running away with 2024.
-
I agree. Having gone to Euros myself and saw what was happening first hand. it was simply a Blah event nothing epic or grand just a tournament. It definitely wasn't the "we hosted the best most successful Euros!" moment. which Ironically the US has been able to say that about recently hosting Copa. That was a major success on all fronts. granted hosted over a larger country. Euro 2016 doesn't hurt Paris 2024's chances but it was supposed to be the "go to" argument in their presentation, their crown jewel.

I am going to say it now, mark my prediction July 12 9:31pm LA is going to win 2024. I know I live here and I'm supporting them but I also know the cards are slightly stacked against us but something in my gut is telling me LA will win (Hope it's not gas lol) and it will be a shock win. Like all signs point to Paris but it goes down to the last vote.- 4,791 replies

Oh damn! With Raggi winning the mayoral election in Rome that's not a good sign for LA. Rome most likely would take some votes away from Paris in an opening round ballot thus splitting the Europe vote, giving LA a chance to sneak in. However if Rome loses credibility with an unsupportive mayor or gets pulled all together then most likely all those Rome votes will go Paris' way. LA needs Rome in this race.- 4,791 replies

Yo Yo Yo calm down on the ATLANTA rings man. If you're a true Olympic historian you'd remember that those rings were made by kids and to be quite frank they're actually really good for 100 kids in a time before the earpieces with formation callers became status quo.
