  1. I doesn't need. It will just need to remove some seats to make space for the media stands. That's standard for major sport events.

  3. Sicne it is residences for the military they can actually kick them out for a short period. BTW, this is not going to be THE referee's village, but one of them. There is at least another one in the Port.
  4. Not confirmed. Until Vasco da Gama formally pulls out, São Januário is the official rugby venue. By the way, São Januário falls within the 4 cluster concept, while Moça Bonita would require special logistics to host the Games.
  5. This is a never ending discussion. The fact is that football tickets are going to become much more expensive or Brazilian teams are going to remain raising talents to European clubs. It is a ridiculous point made by people who can't concatenate their thoughts. They wan't the best players to stay, the clubs to be strong, the stadia to be comfortable and safe and the tickets to be cheap. I wonder who is going to pay the high cost of doing everything they wish with such low prices. Besides, unlike what the article says, it is not the price of the ticket that gets supporters away, it is the opposite. Going to a football stadium in Brazil means going to a dirty, unsafe, uncomfortable venue with the worst infrastructure you can think of. Just stay away from the rest rooms, arrive 2h before the match and run away at the first sight of a fight and it will be fine. It is ridiculous. The reason why people don't go more often is obvious: it is uncomfortable and unsafe. The second reason is that most teams lack attractive players, so the quality of the game is not what a Brazilian would expect. There are a lot of people who would pay much more than the current ticket prices if they had higher security and comfort standards. That would mean more money for the clubs, which would mean better players and which would mean better football. This will make the machine move making prices higher and having less poor people at the stadium. But that's exactly what happened in Europe from the mid 80's on. There is no escape. BTW, I don't see the NYT commenting on the professional leagues in the US, which are far from being an every person show. They should do the math. Maracanã will fit around 80.000 people, while the population of Rio metro area is around 12 million. So, it doesn't fit a lot of people. The ones who pay the most are going to be able to watch, the others are going to watch through the TV. That is sport as a business.
  6. ^^^ That's Elevado do Joá not Avenida Niemeyer. Avenida Niemeyer connects Leblon to São Conrado via Vidigal, while the highway that you show connects São Conrado to Barra via Joá.
  7. So, you are probably as old as me. Well, it was not that hot if you chose to sit on the same side of the stands of the VIP seats (cadeira especial), which were under the shadow. On the other side, which recently has been occupied by the white seats, has always been very hot, before the sun went down. Anyway, I don't know if you have noticed that since they have closed the upper ring with the boxes (camarotes), the stands have become pretty hot even during evening matches. But as you said, when I was a child, my mother would force me to take a long sleeve shirt to Maracanã. It was really chilly in the evening because of the wind.
  8. ^^^ I read part of it and it is the worst kind of journalism that I have seen. The person who wrote that has never done any construction work. Not even a small renovation of his or her house or apartment. The method to estimate when the works are going to be completed was done by dividing the current money spent on the project, divide it by the budget and compare it with the percentage of the schedule that has passed. Basically, if a project costs 100 million and 10 million has been spend so far, it estimates that the other 90 million are going to be spent in the same pace. Therefore, if the project had started 2 months ago, it would take 18 months to complete the job. This ridiculous, since the execution of the budget varies in intensity along time. In general, it really increases in the end of the process where all the details needed to finish the projects, like plumbing, wires, etc consume a lot of money in material and manpower. So far, most of the stadia is being demolished or building new foundations. Since this step of the process typically consumes less money in materials and employs less people, it is normal that the budget execution is slower at this point.
  9. I don't know how old you are, but Maracanã was not always this hot. Before the boxes were built, you could enter the upper ring grand stands from the tunnels or from the top. The circulation area on the top of the upper ring allowed for the air to circulate and the stadium was not very hot for spectators which were not under the shadow of the roof. With the new roof, the effect of the sun should be less important, since more seats will be covered. Even the trans-lucid cover should be fine, since it is not transparent, thus filtering part of the sun light.
  10. I am not living in Rio, but I have been there for Carnival. I don't have pictures of the construction site, but I have passed by some of them during my stay. The Barra subway station construction and the tunnel excavation is totally visible. The construction of BRT Transoeste is also advanced. I could see personally the elevated passage being built close to the OV site, the tunnel to link Recreio to Guaratiba and the widening of Av. das Americas to open the space for the BRT dedicated lanes. I have also passed in front of Maracanã and it really looked like in ruins to me. The demolition is well under way and it looked sad to see that wonderful stadium in such a state. At least, I am positive about the results of this renovation. By the way, I have been to JH stadium for the semifinals of the Guanabara Cup (first leg of the Rio state championship). It desperately needs that new access from Linha Amarela high way. Currently the routes to arrive and leave the stadium by car are dreadfull.
  11. The guy who wrote that did not check the facts. For 2014, there are risks manly of airport upgrade delays and of 2 stadia (Natal and SP). So, just by replacing SP by another host city for football, 2016 would not be a problem. Here is a list of the projects. I think it would be nice to summarize what Rio has done so far. Here are the most important actions that I have seen taken to deliver what was promised. If you know more actions, feel free to add to the list: Transports: -> BRT Transcarioca (called T5 in the bid book) -> Targeted for 4Q13 - 1st section (Barra - Penha) - Demolitions being finalized. - Construction has started. -> 2nd section (Penha - Rio Intl Airport) - Project finalized - Tender published -> BRT Transoeste (covers part of the former Barra-Zona Sul BRT) -> Targeted for 3Q12 - Construction under way. - Main bridges to avoid intersection to be delivered in 1Q11. -> BRT Transolimpica (called C-Link in the bid book) -> Targeted for 2015 - Project finalized. - Tender to be published. -> Subway Line 4 (Barra- Gávea, covers part of the former Barra- Zona Sul BRT) -> Targeted for 2015 - Under construction -> Subway Line 1 (Ipanema- Gávea, covers part of the former Barra- Zona Sul BRT) -> Targeted for 2015 - Studies to define the path are finished. - Tender in preparation. -> Duplication of Avenida Niemeyer - Not started. -> Renovation of the surroundings of the JH Stadium. - Removed houses have been notified for the demolition to start. Venues: -> Maracanã refurbishment -> Targeted for 4Q2012 - Demolition of the lower ring is finalized. - Demolition of part of the upper ring is under way. - Issue: Ceiling will need to be rebuilt. - Constructions to begin between 2Q11 and 3Q11. -> OTC and Olympic park construction (includes Aquatic Center, Field Hokey Center, Tennis Center, the OTC 4 halls, the MPC and the IBC) - International competition to design the facilities was launched. - The new auto-racing track project is being finalized. (A requirement for the start of the OTC construction is that the current racing track is replaced ny a new one). -> Riocentro Hall 6 construction - No news -> Athletes park construction - Under construction to host RockInRio in September 2011. -> X Park construction - No news -> JH Stadium upgrade -> Targeted for 3Q2015 - Planned to start on 2013 after the delivery of Maracanã. 12. This is pure speculation, coming from the fact that he is Havelenge's true heir. There is no statement from him or anyone close to him saying that. IMO, he is too smart to run himself. He is probably going to choose someone who is less involved and who will provide a better political arrangement. Choosing an Asian member now would shut down the opposition from the AFC president.
  13. The duplication of Avenida Niemeyer is challenging but not that difficult. Most of it is carved in stone, so they could cut the mountain and/ or create an elevated extension on one of the sides. Most of the road length has no construction, so the costs of buying land should not be an issue, unlike other options. "Elavado da Perimetral" - The one that runs parallel to the shore line.
  14. Really, research a little bit further. Teixeira or anyone close to him has ever said that he will run for FIFA presidency. In fact, the rumors about his desire for the post comes from Brazilian journalists that attack him on a daily basis. He's reputation is terrible and he is 100% behind Blatter, probably being even stronger politically than the current president, after all he is the one with the right to speak for the old man Havelange. Teixeira might run for FIFA presidency, but that would never happen without Blatter's support. Just to highlight how ridiculous are the accounts of a dispute between Blatter and Teixeira, while the big controversy about the Morumbi stadium was going on, there were people suggesting that Teixeira was fighting with Valcke (Blatter's man). However, those guys did not even bothered to do some research to find out that Valcke was actually staying in Teixeira's house when he traveled to Brazil. Regarding the membership on the ExCom, it is distributed by Continental Confederation, not by Country. If Italy does not have a member, that's because UEFA did not allow. For the same reason countries like Kuwait, Thailand and Sri Lanka do. Last but not least, the Americas are 100% behind Blatter. Jack Warner and most of the Concacaf members love it. Leoz, Grondona and Teixeira love it as well and the rest of Conmebol will go behind them because they have no choice. By the way, 2026 will be in the Americas, since Europe and Asia will be out because of continental rotation (written rule in FIFA). The other 2 possible continents (Africa and Oceania) have no one to present, since Australia as part of the AFC is an Asian country as far as FIFA is concerned. Platini and the whole Eastern European block are 100% behind him, as well. And so is Africa, Dany Joradaan included, with a big help from Isata Houtou. The only pockets of resistance to his power are in the far east, where the Korean president of the AFC wants to run for FIFA presidency and in the Western Europe where the big leagues don't want to send their players for international matches. However, the concentration of power in a few leagues has been doing a lot to weaken this group. The result is that they don't even control UEFA anymore, since Platini is a Blatter's ally. In my opinion, Blatter is approaching then Arab countries and Russia to maintain his main allies in the pockets of resistance in Asia and Europe. By the way, if the situation gets politically difficult for him to stay in office, his group will choose someone faithful and palatable from its ranks and put in his place. It might be even some of the people that you have mentioned.

  16. Rio 2016 logo was a pleasant surprise.

  17. The media is making a big fuss about it because of the unprecedent reaction of the government and, more important, the support of the public. You might not realize but this is a historical moment for Rio. I lived there for 30 years, before I moved out. I could not take my eyes off the TV this weekend even several miles away from my home city. The media coverage is a tribute to the amazing job being done.
  18. Most of the venues in the Deodoro cluster are inside a big compound of training, housing and operational facilities of the Brazilian armed forces. It is known as the Military Village. The sports events which are going to happen there are exactly the ones which have more participants linked to the Brazilian army, such as fencing, equestrian and shooting, as well as modern pentathlon, which includes these events. These facilities are going to be used by the Brazilian army after the games, that's why fencing was put there... Since it is also in a district which is distant from the city center and it has a lot of open space, with elevations, it is also a perfect spot to build facilities to BMX, Mountain Bike and Slalon Canoe and Kayaking.
  19. Actually that means that construction will start anytime in the next 2 weeks. The design has been ready for over 2 months now.
  20. In France even football national squad strikes!

  21. The plan was ridiculous. Moving those sports would put 1500 athletes which would walk from the OV to their venues through a 40-minute travel to the Port. Besides, it would leave all the media 40 minutes away from most of the venues, the OV, the IBC and the MPC. Terrible plan. What will end up in the Port are residencies for referees, as before, and the Press Center and housing for the journalists with no credentials. That means the ones who have no access to the venues and competitions, but only work on news and articles about the city life, live sites and so on. IMO, the Mayor knew it was absurd, but agree to present it to avoid future criticism. After Rio won the Games, the IAB (Brazilian Architecture Institute) started to make a big fuss about moving events to the port to benefit the city even further. Paes let them carry this idea, build the plan and accepted the rejection. Now, if anyone tries to blame for this, he can say it was the IOC. He was politically smart.
  22. I believe it was Julio Maglione's idea to hold the test event in the future Olympic venue as a test event, that's why he wants to secure the win for Rio.
  23. Let's not forget that current FIFA regulations for the WC is not to allow more than 2 stadia per city.
  24. We can fly them over from the Jacarepaguá Airport (5 km from the OV) to the Santos Dumont airport (2 km from the Port). The only problem is that we can't use big jets. Jacarepaguá is for executive airplanes and Santos Dumont can only support jets the size of a Boeing 737. It's an idea...
