  1. Borussia Dortmund football team bus hit by explosions

Three explosions have hit a bus carrying the Borussia Dortmund football team to their home Champions League quarter-final match against Monaco.

Player Marc Bartra was injured and was taken to hospital, the club said, but is not believed to be seriously hurt.

The team tweeted (in German) that the other players were safe and there was no danger in or around the stadium.

The first-leg match was postponed and will now be played on Wednesday at 18:45 local time (16:45 GMT).

  2. Japan gov't approves Osaka's bid to host 2025 World Expo

    April 11, 2017 (Mainichi Japan)

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The government approved Tuesday the bid by Osaka Prefecture to host the 2025 World Exposition.

The western Japanese city will be pitted against Paris, while Russia is also seen as moving to announce its candidacy to host the world's fair. Osaka previously hosted the expo in 1970, an event that symbolized Japan's rapid economic growth after World War II along with the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

The host will be decided through a vote by member countries of the expo's governing body, the Bureau International des Expositions, at its general meeting in November 2018.

Osaka Gov. Ichiro Matsui will file the candidacy as early as April 24 at the BIE headquarters in Paris. Sadayuki Sakakibara, the chief of the Japan Business Federation, heads the bidding committee and will accompany Matsui.

Osaka has proposed to hold the event on the artificial island of Yumeshima over a period of 185 days between May and November 2025, with estimates that it could benefit the economy by 1.9 trillion yen ($17 billion), while 28 million to 30 million people are expected to visit the fair

"It will bring significant economic impact to our country," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a press conference after the Cabinet approved Osaka's bid.

The 1970 Osaka Expo was visited by around 64 million people. Japan also hosted the expo in 2005 in Aichi Prefecture.

Construction costs for the latest attempt are estimated at 125 billion yen. The central government, the Osaka prefectural and municipal governments as well as the private sector will each shoulder a third of the expenses.

Japan is planning to push its bid at the BIE's general meetings to be held in June and November. It will also have a similar opportunity when the body visits Osaka for inspection in early 2018 at the earliest.

International Federations reveal new events proposed for Tokyo 2020

High diving, mixed synchronised swimming, basketball 3x3 and BMX freestyle are among at least 25 extra events and disciplines spanning around 15 sports proposed for inclusion at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

This total does not count those which have been added as a direct replacement for others in the same sport.

It does, however, count five mixed team events which would include no or very few additional athletes.

It also does not include the five additional sports added to the programme just for the 2020 Games last year: baseball and softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.

Of those who responded when questioned by insidethegames, archery, aquatics, basketball, boxing, judo, modern pentathlon, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon and weightlifting have all proposed new events or disciplines.

Canoeing, rowing and shooting have also proposed new events to replace old ones in order to ensure full or greater gender equality on their respective programmes.

Cycling have not officially confirmed their plans, but insidethegames understands that in addition to male and female BMX freestyle park events, men's and women's madison competitions have been proposed to be added to the track programme.

If approved, this would mark the debut of the women's madison and the return of the men's event after it was dropped following Beijing 2008.

Athletics have been given until after their Council meeting in London on April 12 and 13 to finalise their application.

It comes after 60 leading racewalkers sent a petition to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) protesting against the rumoured axing of the men's 50 kilometres event.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) have proposed the most radical changes.

This includes the addition of high diving as an "extreme sport" in which men will dive from a 27 metres platform and women from 20m.

A mixed duet synchronised event consisting of 12 teams is another innovative proposal.

If confirmed, this would mark the first time male synchronised swimmers have ever competed at the Olympics.

The submitted swimming programme would be the same as for the FINA World Championships.

As well as the 32 existing Olympic events, this would include 50m breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly events for men and women.

Women will also race over 1,500m while men would compete over 800m.

A 4x100m freestyle and a 4x100m medley mixed relay has also been submitted.

Twelve rather than eight teams would compete in male and female water polo competitions, although a cutting of team sizes from 13 to 11 would mean only four additional athletes would be needed.

It is also hoped that an extra 24 divers and 20 open water swimmers will feature.

Of the new disciplines proposed, basketball 3x3 appears the most likely to be successful.

Two 16-team competitions consisting of 48 male and 48 female athletes have been submitted.

Archery have proposed a two-person mixed team event consisting purely of athletes already on the programme.

Mixed relay events have also been proposed in modern pentathlon and triathlon.

Canoeing have proposed the women's C1 slalom event to replace the men's C2.

    The C1 women's 200m and C2 500m will replace the C1 men's 200 and K2 men's 200m.

In order to give sprinters in the latter events an alternative, the men's K4 500 will replace the K4 1,000m.

A mixed team competition has been proposed in judo.

Men are expected to compete at under-73, under-90 and over-90 kilograms.

Female bouts will be held at under-57, under-70 and over 70kg

Taekwondo have also proposed a mixed team event.

The format would likely consist of five athletes - something which would require at least one additional participant per team due to the current maximum of two men and two women participating across individual events.

Finer details have not yet been finalised, however.

Two new female weight categories have been proposed in boxing.

Exact divisions have not yet been announced, but there is no proposal to drop any male event.

It is thought that the numbers of boxers competing in each individual division will instead be cut in order to avoid a cumulative rise.

Three new mixed team competitions have been proposed in shooting to replace three individual events.

These will be in 10m air rifle, 10m air pistol and trap events.

The men's 50m rifle prone, 50m pistol and double trap would all be dropped from the programme.

Table tennis have proposed men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles events.

They did not respond when insidethegames asked if this would be as well as or instead of the existing team events.

Weightlifting hope to add an eighth women's category to ensure full gender equality.

New events for under and over-90kg would replace the existing over-75kg category.

No additional quotas would be required for additional athletes, however, meaning numbers in other divisions would be trimmed.

Badminton, equestrian, handball, hockey, sailing, tennis, volleyball and wrestling have all confirmed that they are not proposing any new events.

Some of these, such as wrestling, are currently considering changes to "improve the format" of the existing events.

Gymnastics have refused to reveal if they have applied.

"Regarding Tokyo 2020 or possible new events or disciplines, the International Gymnastics Federation has nothing to add to what we have published so far," a spokesperson said.

Fencing are expected to continue their usual rotation system in which only four of the six team events will be present.

If they continue their normal system, the two missing out in Tokyo will be the men's foil and women's épée.

This is expected to be announced "during the summer".

The International Golf Federation have "nothing to report at this stage" but have given no indication of interest.

Football governing body FIFA has not yet sent a response.

Under their Agenda 2020 reform process, the IOC aim to avoid having more than 310 events on the Olympic programme.

There were 306 events featuring at Rio 2016.

The five new sports added for Tokyo 2020 do not count in this total.

New events and disciplines within existing sports are now due to be considered by the IOC Olympic Programme Commission before final decisions are made during an Executive Board meeting scheduled for July in Lausanne.

Milan poised to host 2019 IOC Session

Italian city Milan is set to be named as host of the 2019 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in September after being confirmed as the only contender today.

This comes despite other "expressions of interest" from up to five other cities.

Only the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) ultimately filed a bid before the deadline, however.

An IOC-appointed Evaluation Commission is now set to inspect the city on May 23 and 24 to decide upon an appropriate venue.

A full proposal will then be submitted to the IOC Executive Board for approval before rubber-stamping at this year's Session in Lima to be held between September 13 and 17.

"The IOC can confirm that the Italian Olympic Committee submitted an application to host the 132nd IOC session in 2019 in the city of Milan," a spokesperson told insidethegames today.

"The IOC received many expressions of interest through a reviewed and more consultative candidature procedure.

"The IOC Session Evaluation Commission will now enter into discussion with the Italian NOC to determine which is the best choice to be proposed by the Executive Board to the next IOC Session."

The Indian Sports Ministry announced earlier this month that they would support a potential proposal from New Delhi.

According to a statement distributed by the Federation International Cinema Television Sportifs (FICTS), interest had also been expressed by Budapest, Kraków, Brussels and Istanbul.

Budapest withdrew from the race for the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games late last month, while the Polish city of Kraków pulled out of the 2022 Winter Olympic race in 2014.

The IOC did not respond specifically to questions about any of these potential bidders.

Their statement, however, suggests that none were ultimately formally put forward.

Hosting the Session in Milan is a way for Italy to rebuild bridges with the IOC after Rome also withdrew from the 2024 race last year amid political opposition from the city's Mayor, Virginia Raggi.

Milan's Mayor, Giuseppe Sala, is thought to be a supporter of the plan.

The 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games are due to be awarded at the 2019 Session.

  5. Bureau of the Council recommends slot allocation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™

    (FIFA.com) 30 Mar 2017

The Bureau of the FIFA Council – comprised of the FIFA President and the presidents of each of the six confederations – convened this Thursday at the Home of FIFA in Zurich and agreed on a proposed slot allocation for the FIFA World Cup™ as of the 2026 edition.

The recommendation will now be submitted for the ratification of the FIFA Council, whose next meeting is scheduled for 9 May in Manama, Bahrain, two days prior to the 67th FIFA Congress.

After 10 January, when the FIFA Council unanimously decided on expanding the FIFA World Cup to a 48-team competition, FIFA, the confederations and the Member Associations engaged in a consultation process, which resulted in the proposal recommended by the Bureau of the Council. According to this proposal, the split of direct berths is as follows:

    Slot allocation*

    ·         AFC: 8 direct slots

    ·         CAF: 9 direct slots

    ·         CONCACAF: 6 direct slots

    ·         CONMEBOL: 6 direct slots

    ·         OFC: 1 direct slot

    ·         UEFA: 16 direct slots

    * The host country would also automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup, and its slot would be taken from the quota of its confederation. In the event of co-hosting, the number of host countries to qualify automatically would be decided by the FIFA Council.

Play-off tournament for two remaining slots

The above allocation accounts for 46 of the 48 participating teams. The proposal reviewed by the Bureau of the Council includes a play-off tournament involving six teams to decide the last two FIFA World Cup berths:

    -          One team per confederation with the exception of UEFA + one additional team from the confederation of the host country;

    -          Two teams to be seeded based on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. The seeded teams will play for a FIFA World Cup berth against the winners of the first two knockout games involving the four unseeded teams;

    -          Tournament to be played in the host country(ies) and to be used as a test event for the FIFA World Cup;

    -          Existing play-off window of November 2025 suggested as tentative date for the 2026 edition.

  6. Lionel Messi suspended for four matches

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee – in application of articles 77 a) and 108 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) – has reached a decision in relation to the case of Lionel Messi following an incident that occurred during the match between Argentina and Chile on 23 March 2017 as part of the qualifying competition for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™:

Lionel Messi has been found guilty of violating art. 57 of the FDC for having directed insulting words at an assistant referee.

As a result, Messi will be suspended for four official matches and sanctioned with a fine of CHF 10,000. The first match for which the sanction will apply is the next fixture in the preliminary competition of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ between Bolivia and Argentina, which will be played today, 28 March. The remainder of the sanction will be served over Argentina’s subsequent FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

This decision is in line with the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s previous rulings in similar cases.

Both the player and the Argentinian Football Association have been informed of the decision today.

  7. Special panel formed to discuss 2020 opening, closing ceremonies

    Sports Mar. 25, 2017 - 06:33AM JST ( 4 )

    TOKYO —

The Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic organizing committee’s executive board on Friday approved a panel of experts in various fields to advise on the production of the opening and closing ceremonies.

The 12-member panel, which will be chaired by 2020 Honorary President and Chairman/CEO of Canon Fujio Mitarai, will decide the general theme of the ceremonies as well as their artistic directors.

The panel includes the likes of Yoshinobu Miyake, weightlifting gold medalist at the last Tokyo Olympics in 1964, author Ayako Sono and one foreigner, David Atkinson, a former analyst with Goldman Sachs based in Japan who is now a cultural expert as head of Konishi Decorative Arts and Crafts.

Hidemasa Nakamura, 2020’s chief financial officer, said the experts will discuss how the ceremonies can help define what will be the legacy of the Tokyo Games.

“The 1964 Games left a huge influence on Japan. It was an event with great historical and social significance,” Nakamura said. “We need to ask ourselves what kind of significance the 2020 Games will have for Japan as we move forward.”

Organizers on Tuesday also announced that as of April 1, they will begin recycling metals at 2,400 NTT Docomo outlets and public buildings in all 47 prefectures to produce the medals for the Tokyo Olympics.

The metals will be extracted from small household appliances such as mobile phones, computers and digital cameras. Approximately 2 tons of metal will be needed to produce 5,000 medals in the three colors for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.

    #PyeongChang2018

PyeongChang, March 24 – With 350 days to go, the official sport pictograms for the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, comprising of six images, were unveiled today by the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG).

The PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games vision is to open up New Horizons – the hope of enlightening people around the world to discover Korea and what the country has to offer, as a winter sport and travel destination through the world’s largest sporting event. The pictograms are designed to showcase this vision using Korean alphabet known as Hangeul.

Like the Olympic pictograms that were launched at the start of the year, the lines of the Hangeul letters are reflected in the pictograms representing the six Para sport disciplines for the Paralympic Winter Games. The uniqueness of these symbols cement the identity of the Games and also introduces Korean history and culture to their global audience.

The six Paralympic winter sports are Para alpine skiing, Para biathlon, Para cross-country skiing, Para ice hockey, Para snowboard and wheelchair curling.

POCOG President LEE Hee-beom said: “The Paralympic pictograms were designed in such a way that they are easily identifiable with the sports they represent and they tell a story about Korea and our culture. Every Para athlete will bring their amazing spirit and passion to the Games and we see that shine through across all six sports that the pictograms represent. Now is the time for people to create their own passion and excitement around the Paralympic Games and also learn more about Korean culture.”

Sir Philip Craven, IPC President, said: “The launch of the pictograms marks another landmark in the build up to the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

“The pictograms will serve as a communication platform to help raise awareness of the six Paralympic winter sports across multiple channels between now and the Games.  They will help to assist all those engage in the Games by giving them an idea of what they can expect when the event opens on 9 March.”

From 9th – 18th March 2018, these emblems will come to life as more than 650 athletes compete for glory.

Tickets for the Paralympic Games will go on sale later this year and people can look forward to 10 days of fun and excitement that will build on the back of the energy and exhilaration created across PyeongChang from the Olympics just a few weeks prior. Heroes will be created, memorable moments will be captured and experiences will be shared that will never be seen again in the mountains and on the ice.

Before then there is one final Para test event on the calendar in the Gangneung 2017 World Para Ice Hockey Championships from 11-20 April at the Gangneung Hockey Centre. The top five teams will automatically earn their spot for PyeongChang 2018 so the teams will be counting on some passionate and vocal crowds to cheer them onto glory.
