  1. The thing with these 'nuisance' bids (i.e., those that have absolutely a snowball's chance in hell of winning) is that so long as they are dues-paying members of the association, and they can pay for all those fantastic designs and renderings, there really is no way to keep them out of the bidding process.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Qatar could become the first Arab nation to host a World Cup in 2022, praising its rapid development and proven capacity to host large sporting events. ''The Arab world deserves the World Cup and Qatar has a good chance to become the first country from the region to host it,'' he said.

  2. True. Both Bolt and Phelps could repeat in London. Or even claim a few more prizes in Chicago/Rio/Tokyo/Madrid (???). But if the feats of Jesse Owens, Mark Spitz, and Paavo Nurmi have stood the test of time, surely winning 8 golds in one Olympiad and 14 gold in two is good enough to keep you in the Top 10.

Phelps is amazing. I`m not saying he isn`t or that he isn`t going to be always remembered for his achievements!!!!!

Bolts achievements are just different in my opinion, that`s all.

  3. What's that got to do with anything? It just means that sprinting is a more mature sport than swimming. Every sport that covers a distance and is timed has a limit. You can't run the 100 m in zero seconds just as you can't swim the length of a pool in zero seconds. In sprinting, we are likely close to the limit of what is humanly possible and will be down to measuring .000's of a second. In swimming, we likely have a ways to go, but still, it isn't like the records are broken by 15 or 20 seconds.

Sprinting is close to being perfected. A certain body type and clothing type have been optimized. Swimming still has some experimentation with body types and clothing.

We will have to agree to disagree. The Lightning Bolt will set more records in the coming years. I won`t here anything about Swimming until 2012. Swimming just doesn`t have the reach Athletics has.

  4. Comparing records in swimming with those in Athletics is unfair I believe.

Records in swimming are broken on a daily bases it would seem so :s Every time there is a competion records fall. In Athletics world records are hard to come by.

How many have been broken in Beijing in Athletics? 3 I think?

How many in swimming? I think 22 new world marks.

    Think about it nyfan.

  5. What Bolt's done, has been done before. Michael Phelps broke 7 WR and 8 gold medals. How does that compare to 2 (likely 3) golds?

The glamour of athletics has diminished

Carl Lewis won the 100m and 200m in 1984, correct you are. But did he achieve them in World Record Speeds? No. he got the Olympic Record in the 200m, not the WR.

The way in which Bolt crushed the fields in the 2 events further adds to his superioty.

I`m not diminishing Phelps, he is a wonderful athlete. But Bolt has redefined Sprinting and brought Athletics away from its reputation of `winning only by doping`. That also adds to his success.

  6. How can you say that with a straight face? Phelps has 8 Beijing gold, 7 world records, and 1 Olympic record. Those will go next to his 6 Athens gold, and 2 Athens bronze, 1 done in world record time, 3 in Olympic record time.

Bolt's achievement is impressive. Thrilling. Iconic even, for having claimed the two fastest times ever in two very hot events. But you can't deny the place that Michael Phelps will have in Olympic history. No one has achieved what he has achieved. Whereas Bolt's double gold achievement has at least been done twice.

I`m not diminishing Phelps achievments. But you can`t compare Phelps with Bolt. Phelps is magnificent at what he does, but when you compare it Bolts success, you have to factor in some issues.

Athletics will be and has always been the glamour event of the Olympics. A success on the track almost always eclipses those of the other sports, it`s just the way it has always been. Be it right or wrong.

The way in which Bolt won the 100m, was UNBELIEVABLE. I`m still in awe of what he did on a few nights ago, then to follow it up with the new WR in 200m... amazing.

Phelps has been going well for years, he was expected to do very very well in Beijing. Bolt took most people by surprise, another reason for the hype.

If Phelps is amazing, Bolt is legendary.

  7. Actually, in terms of total medals, we had our best ever swim meet in Beijing. In terms of gold, it was only one behind Athens and two behind Melbourne 56. And people said without Ian Thorpe we would slump badly.

I agree, cycling was a failure. But all the more incentive to rebuild. And that was our failing _ not rebuilding in time.

but the Aussie swim team is fading. In terms of age and what can be expected in the future.

The women won 6 gold medals, the men won zero.

  8. You never know, 4 years is enough time to come back from where we are right now, more talent is yet to be found...... and why do you think its going to be in Rio for 2016?? But anyways, I am sure that we will do well in all the Olympics to come.

I hope you do well, I like Australians.

Just can`t understand how the cycling went so wrong. and the means swimming team. You will come back probably.

I think South America deserve their time to shine in 2016.
