Comparing records in swimming with those in Athletics is unfair I believe. Records in swimming are broken on a daily bases it would seem so :s Every time there is a competion records fall. In Athletics world records are hard to come by. How many have been broken in Beijing in Athletics? 3 I think? How many in swimming? I think 22 new world marks. Think about it nyfan.

Carl Lewis won the 100m and 200m in 1984, correct you are. But did he achieve them in World Record Speeds? No. he got the Olympic Record in the 200m, not the WR. The way in which Bolt crushed the fields in the 2 events further adds to his superioty. I`m not diminishing Phelps, he is a wonderful athlete. But Bolt has redefined Sprinting and brought Athletics away from its reputation of `winning only by doping`. That also adds to his success.

I`m not diminishing Phelps achievments. But you can`t compare Phelps with Bolt. Phelps is magnificent at what he does, but when you compare it Bolts success, you have to factor in some issues. Athletics will be and has always been the glamour event of the Olympics. A success on the track almost always eclipses those of the other sports, it`s just the way it has always been. Be it right or wrong. The way in which Bolt won the 100m, was UNBELIEVABLE. I`m still in awe of what he did on a few nights ago, then to follow it up with the new WR in 200m... amazing. Phelps has been going well for years, he was expected to do very very well in Beijing. Bolt took most people by surprise, another reason for the hype. If Phelps is amazing, Bolt is legendary.

What I like about the 100m and 200m guys is that they are showmen and athletes combined. Bolt is amazing, he can do what he wants in my opinion. This achievement surpasses anything Michael Phelps could do in the swimming pool. The Lightning Bolt!! Love his style.

I don`t underestimate Australia in swimming, of course I don`t. With the amount of money you spend on swimming, I`m amazed you don`t win every gold medal.

but the Aussie swim team is fading. In terms of age and what can be expected in the future. The women won 6 gold medals, the men won zero.
