Still, it's beautifully staged. But probably it would have a more proper place at Los Angeles 2028. Regardless, I hope, too, that it won't become the new "Imagine". One shouldn't overstrain it.

"What A Wonderful World" - has that ever been used at an Olympic or Paralympic ceremony before? I guess it was about time.
-
Yes, the flame looks really purple now. I'm curious whether future Olympic/Paralympic hosts will follow Tokyo's concept of having a hydrogen flame. It allows to colour the flame in different colours. Hopefully no host will ever get the idea of colouring the flame in its national colours.

That is what they are announcing. We have 3 years left and most of the original plans are changed most of the times. Street celebration would mean a work 3times bigger than a "stadium" ceremony.
I'm not sure whether that is a good idea. For the two handover segments, the street segments were the least convincing parts for me. It looked like a community event, but not like an Olympic ceremony.

Nice touch, the Eiffel Tower with a prosthetic blade.
But I'm asking myself whether Paris 2024will include such street action segments into their ceremonies. -
And there you go, another Eiffel Tower segment. People are not even wearing facemasks anymore. Not very nice towards the organisers in Tokyo, if you ask me.
-
Paris sure goes new ways in staging the Marseillaise. I'm looking forward to that approach at their ceremonies in 2024!
And now they revive the music from the video that led up to the Eiffel Tower segment at the Olympic closing ceremony. Good to see a more classical handover segment now, with a dance performance! It looks nice! -
And that was the final Olympic/Paralympic appearance of Tokyo's governor Yuriko Koike. I read somewhere that she could become Japan's Prime Minister in the future. That would be an interesting choice in traditionally male-dominated politics in Japan.

Bach's "Wachet auf, rufet die Stimme" playing for the Paralympic flag handover. Odd choice, but still a beautiful piece of music.

Again the Paralympics giving lessons of organization to the Olympic ceremonies team.
Definitely, the Tokyo Olympics ceremonies has no excuses.
Agreed, also the closing ceremony seems to follow a more consistent storyline. But I view it positively, this gave the Paralympics an even bigger opportunity to shine and it showed that even in the "big, shiny world of the Olympic Games" not everything works and is top-notch.

Seriously mate, you brought it up as some sort of evidence of I don’t know what.
Who cares how well, or not, the German commentator prepared.
Celebrate what’s happening in front of you ffs
Maybe you should learn to accept different opinions, I did not state my opinion as a fact so I don't get the fuss you are creating right now. But out of respect towards the other users, this is the last thing I have to say about this senseless line of discussion.

For those whose sensibilities are “disturbed” by taking time out on the world stage to award and recognise these incredible achievements of these athletes and supporters , I recommend you get a life and then change the channel.
You are missing the point entirely. Have fun tonight.

Who cares. He probably has not even bothered to open the Media Guide in front of him.
I fully agree with you JMarkSnow2012.
“they are ceremonies with an entertainment element, not entertainments with a ceremonial element”
Usually the German commentators are well prepared for the ceremonies and know their facts from the Media Guide, so I guess it was not entirely outlined in the Media Guide. Besides, I'd appreciate you hitting a less rude tone just for him (and me) pointing out an opinion. Thanks.

Maybe i watched too many ceremonies on youtube during all of NZ's ongoing lockdowns that my expectations were too high. I have watched every ceremony from 1964 onwards so i guess i know what grabs my attention and what does not.
I think all 4 ceremonies have been amateurish compared to all of their predecessors. i am sure most members here would agree. just my thoughts though.
Well, if you take a look in the live chats of the Paralympic opening and even the Olympic closing ceremonies of Tokyo 2020, not too many members seem to agree with you. And I find it really puzzling that you consider even a ceremony from 1964 which still followed a very strict protocol and offered no cultural segments at all LESS amateurish than what Tokyo put on display this time around.
-
Even the German TV commentator seems to have a hard time following who gets awarded for what now. Not good. He even just remarked that this part is "like a brake for the flow of the ceremony".
-
I don't know about you, but what I find really unnecessary and boring about ceremonies in recent years is that they have such "award show" elements. I am happy for the awardees, but it somehow disturbs the flow of the ceremonies, especially when the awardees or any other participants get the chance to give a speech.

@Scotguy II I guess that is very much in the eye of the beholder. I don't know where the Paralympic opening came across as amateurish and boring to you, especially with the cute story of the girl acting as the "one-winged plane", but there you go.

And there are the Olympic and Paralympic mascots. It's really funny that the mascots of each Games appear almost never at the opening and closing ceremonies.

Yes, the Tokyo handover at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was stunning and raised the bar very high for the actual Tokyo ceremonies. But I think they made up a great deal for the disappointing Olympic opening ceremony at the Paralympic opening. I thought that was a really nice, happy and warm ceremony, definitely one of the best Paralympic ceremonies I ever saw. It didn't feel downsized or like a "stale afterthought" of the Olympic ceremonies, but let Tokyo shine in a much brighter light.
So far the closing ceremony is decent, I guess. I sadly was busy during the first artistic segment but now for the parade of flags, they use the same kind of funky and happy music as for the Paralympic opening ceremony, which seems to be very much in line with the start of the ceremony. And the part where the athletes put the mirrors on the Tokyo Skytree reminds me of the tree seeds the athletes brought along at Rio's Olympic opening ceremony. That makes me a bit sad, too, because it reminds me how hopeful I was looking towards Tokyo 2020 at Rio's closing ceremony. History took a different turn, sadly, but I must say that Tokyo did a good job as host country in those very difficult circumstances. -

Rio also had rain during the ceremony.. heavy rain!!!
Rio even had rain during three of its four ceremonies, only the Olympic opening ceremony remained dry.

Yeah culturally that is certainly not appropriate if they haven't consulted with Indigenous folks here in Australia before doing that.
That moment aside I LOVED tonight's ceremony. I think it struck a more positive, fun tone that the sombre / slightly playful Opening didn't quite achieve. It also felt much more cohesive and well constructed.
Well done Tokyo.
Can you give us a heads-up why that was not appropriate? I didn't even think of the didgeridoos as the sound of the truck, for me they were simply part of the music.

This was a very nice ceremony! It did not feel contrived, had a clear storyline, was never tacky - but, as I said, it exuded warmth, joy and optimism. The Olympic opening, on the other hand, was too pensive and too disjointed at times. This was the ceremony Tokyo 2020 would have needed right at the start of this Olympic/Paralympic summer, but better late than never. And now I'm curious how the German broadcaster ARD wants to fill the remaining one hour of its broadcast.

And there you go, we get contemporary (and jazzy) music for the final legs of the torch relay. It makes the Olympic opening ceremony really look tacky, as if they had no money left to compose a new piece and simply used some royalty-free classical piece.

The second ad-break on UK Channel 4. Presumably covering another clearance of the performing area.
You are missing the video montage of the Paralympic torch relay and a short ballet performance. Now the Paralympic torch has arrived at the stadium, the final legs of the relay start.

My God, the volunteers even had to disinfect the guardrails. A sobering reminder what task Tokyo and Japan had to fulfill in order to stage Olympic and Paralympic Games during a pandemic. I guess one cannot thank them enough for that.
