Hi Paul - where did you hear about this? Just curious because I haven't noticed it, then again I've only watched water polo, cycling, and rowing so far. Has it been at certain events?

Regarding NBC's coverage this article from Time sums up my thoughts:
NBC Missed the Point of the Olympics Opening Ceremony
In the end I'm just glad Bob Costas only appeared for two minutes - cannot stand him; Matt Lauer isn't much better but tolerable; Hoda was fine and Meredith was meh.

I am liking the mens water polo teams
-
I liked it personally and the cauldron is beautiful and different. The ceremony itself I thought wasn't too extravagant but still gave a nice representation from what I know about Brazil and Rio.

^ Since Omnicorp will be a major sponsor I have no doubt they will deploy their other robots as well to help with security! LOL

If Detroit did host the games would Robocop help with security?

Unless they are flying to LAX/SFO, in which case, JFK is their only choice if they want a non-stop and if they want three class service (First/Business/Coach).
I am well aware of the perimeter rule at LGA but numbers clearly show that the majority of O&D passengers to and from Manhattan prefer to use LGA over JFK and EWR. Either way, LGA will never be torn down - for the simple matter that doing so would but further strain on EWR and JFK, which are already horribly congested as is. You are correct though if they want non-stop to the west coast or Internationally then they have to use JFK or EWR. Trust me, you are not the only aviation buff on GamesBids
-
Or not unless La Guardia will be closed anytime soon.
I seriously doubt that La Guardia will be closed anytime soon - the rich businessmen in Manhattan will never let that happen as they prefer LGA over Newark and JFK.

Olympics also crushed the NBA All-Star Game, if anyone was curious.
Why the NBA decided to have the all star game during the Olympics is beyond me, a very stupid decision - I live in Dallas and the only reason I knew that we were hosting the All Star game was the big billboard plastered on a skyscraper in downtown. In fact, I think the Olympics are more popular here than the All-Star game.
The Pacific time zone and the fact that Canada is out neighbor to the north is what is helping ratings with NBC.

Oh yeah, he's hot. Totally hot butt. The other one too, what's his name? Jeremy Barret? Hot body all over.
Yeah Jeremy is hot to but I like Mark more - you are right, Mark does have one hot butt

What the hell is going on down at the cauldron/fortress of solitude/menorah?? It looks like a prison.
(why is the flame out in this shot!!!)
here's an even more depressing lookingshot, but at least it's lit!
See fenced-off Olympic cauldron but keep your distance

This is probably one of my very few complaints, that chain linked fence is t-a-c-k-y

It's a big event...many things can go wrong. It has nothing to do with luck...and notably there were previous Games that weren't exactly perfect either.
Not that I think Vancouver 2010 is terrible (in fact i'm enjoying it) but even if they were terrible and VANOC was doing a piss poor job what do previous games have to do with a current games success?

All the commericials are to be expected to an extent, but what I don't like is how the cover up their beautiful aerial images with ads. Why bother capturing the beatufy of Canada if you're only going to cover it with an ad? It started with Beijing, and it will probably continue for as long as NBC continues to be the US broadcaster. Stop teasing me, NBC.
I'm looking forward for the Closing Ceremony credits, when they won't place ads over BC's coastal mountains.
This is my biggest pet peeve as well!!! Before Beijing this was one of the reedeming qualities of NBC's coverage but now it is ruined. You get a glimpse of downtown Vancouver or the mountains of British Columbia for maybe a second before being plastered with ads from Chevrolet, McDonald's, P&G, etc. - then you get another second before it cuts to commercial where there are even more ads! I so hope that ABC takes over coverage! The only network that would be worse than NBC would be FOX.
Now that i've gotten that out of the way - I have to say that I don't find the overall coverage nearly as annoying as it was in Beijing, Torino, and Athens. Katie Couric being gone probably helps, now if we can get rid of Bob Costas it will be even better.

So far i'd say Mark Ladwig from pairs figure skating is my personal favorite - just the type of body I love on a man!

True, but most people don't, and therein lies the problem. lol.
Yes, ACOG was smart enough to put a lot of the venues near MARTA, such as at Georgia Tech, Georgia State University (my alma mater) and the made great use out of the Georgia Dome/World Congress Center complex. As far as how crowded each line was during the games, I have no idea, but it would make sense for the north/south line to be more crowded since there are lots of hotels along that line. The east/west line, well, aside from the part that goes from Five Points to the Georgia Dome (which is only 3 stops) no one really likes it. It's just.....yeah. I don't know how to explain it. Remember the crazy "Soulja girl"? I'm pretty sure that was some where on the east/west line.
I think the north-south line overall is just more crowded since you get people from Midtown, Buckhead, NE Atlanta, and the suburbs going into Gwinett County and Alpharetta - basically the North part of the North-South line goes through and serves the nicer parts of Atlanta, and then you have the airport to the south which I hear is one good use of MARTA....many people i've talked to there say its easier to just park your car at the MARTA station and then take the train to ATL.
You don't have to explain the East-West line, other than Five points and Decatur what good part of Atlanta does it actually serve? LOL
-
If MARTA is so damn bad, makes one wonder how in the world was it ever suitable as part of an Olympic bid.
Apparently, Delta, Coca-cola, Home Depot, Ted Turner, Hometown of MLK (African American Olympics) & the afterglow of Los Angeles 1984, Athens just wasn't ready & was quite arrogant anyway, etc, overshadowed anything else.
Roux and BStout, correct me if i'm wrong but weren't a large majority of the venues near the MARTA line? I know busses were used for venues that were not on MARTA. Also, wasn't the north-south line the one that was overly congested during the games. I have heard from some that the east-west line was nearly empty on some nights during the Olympics.
MARTA isn't terribly bad if you live right near the station or are using it to go downtown or to an event like the Braves game but I do agree that it is inefficient when compared to Washington DC, NYC, Chicago, etc. I've never had a problem with MARTA but as I always joke "it's fun to take, you just have to drive to the MARTA station to catch the train" LOL
I went to DC instead. I got to drunkenly ride the Metro everywhere and eat great Asian food. DC should host the SOG someday.I LOVE Washington DC!!!! Metro is just wonderul to get around the city, what part of town were you in mostly? I have spent alot of time in the DuPont Circle area, hoping to go visit some friends there in April! And yes DC would make a great SOG host some day
-
Barrack, how did you enjoy your trip to Atlanta? Even though I have never lived there I have visited the city quite often and love it!
Roux - loved your rant about Atlanta vs. the rest of GA mentality! You hit it spot on

I just found this info about the cauldron and lighting method for Vancouver BC, can't believe this info was on line already!
LMAO stirthesould, I have to admit that did give me a good chuckle
-
^Yes that does give you sort of an idea of what NBC does when they cut to commercial, except the clips are maybe 30 seconds tops when they do it. Thanks for posting!
And yes, I am just afraid to see what NBC does for their coverage of Vancouver 2010
-
What was this?
During the Olympics when NBC cuts to a commercial during an event or the Ceremonies they always play the Olympic Fanfare and then show a clip of the host city/region. For example, during Sydney 2000 they would cut to a commercial, play the Fanfare and then do a flyover of Sydney Harbour. Actually, it's always been a great aspect of watching the games here and one of the few things that NBC has done right.
I believe it may have started with Torino 2006 or possibly Athens where they would have the clip but also have a small picture of a sponsorship logo (like Coca Cola or McDonalds), however the logo was fairly small and you could still see the clip.
During Beijing they kept the clips and fanfare but took the sponsorship logo one step further - they had this big gold box with a huge picture of the sponsorship logo in it taking up a large piece of the screen - there was honestly no use in showing a flyover of the Beijing skyline or the Great Wall because you could barely even see it!
I know it's hard to explain and i've been trying to find a clip on youtube that will give you a beter idea.

I was in a thrift store a couple weeks back in Houston
stirthesoul, you should have PMed me when you were in Houston, it's always fun to meet fellow GamesBidders! Do you come here often?
-
It sounds like VANOC has a lot on their plate with regards to the ceremonies - but still, can't beat the gorgeous setting Vancouver and British Columbia will provide. I just hope NBC does away with that giant Gold box for sponsorships they had during Beijing 2008 when they showed clips of the host region.
