  1. NHL has now officially confirmed they will take part in Beijing 2022. People in this thread still seriously think a boycott is gonna happen?
  2. NHL makes their return for Beijing 2022 after skipping Pyeongchang because of money reasons. Much like NBA, I guess they just couldn't resist sweet Yuan money.
  3. Drum segment was very reminiscing of Beijing 2022. Also i've noticed they implemented new methods for projections by using invisible walls which covered the empty seats (Winter Olympics will probably also have an empty or very limited capacity openign ceremony)
  4. North Korea didn't attended Tokyo because COVID pandemic has caused China to divert the funds they usually give to NK into themselves to solve their own issues with the virus, so they're going through a very harsh crisis, their worse since the 90s famines (after the USSR kicked the bucket and Soviet help ended) and Kim Jong Un has decided to isolate people even more, the punishment to be exposed to even the tiniest drop of "Evil, degenerate Western influence" can also include death. Of course, their athletes are not exempt from this, so it wasn't really a political boycott. And to be honest, NK would had probably skipped Beijing 2022 as well for the same reasons.
  5. Despite everything which happened, Tokyo proved that under the current circunstances, its still possible to perform these events. While I get sad sometimes thinking about what could had been if Covid didn't happened, the effort put by the entire country was very moving. Maybe Japan won't look back at this event with lots of nostalgia, but at least they avoided a bigger disaster which would had been its complete cancellation. Also, the Paralympics ceremonies while still being very simple were x1000 better than the mess which were the Olympic ones because of the reasons we already know and we don't need to mention again. Sadly, this was a textbook of How Not to Organize your Olympic Ceremonies (Japan seems to be cursed as hell when it comes for sport ceremonies tbh, most of them sucking). Anyway, Rendezvous a Paris 2024.
  6. Yes, but he was also the "Hey, lets do vaccine domestic trials and don't trust the ones already existing, what could possibly go wrong?" guy which caused a laughable vaccination rate for a first world country like Japan. His decisions condemned the games to not have any spectators at all.
  7. Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga has resigned today. Sadly, this is not surprising considering his catastrophic decisions regarding the Pandemic which also screwed up hard the Olympics.
  8. He was the president of literally the last good Olympics. After he left, it all became ogre since then with Bach and his cronies. Truly sad news.
  9. As much as I wished this to had been reality, I think its time to let it go. Japan will have another chance in the future, but i think its time to focus ceremonies wise in Beijing and Paris. What's done is done.
  10. Didn't knew Junichi did music for the Paralympics ceremony. I know him for doing the music of Kirameiger (previous Super Sentai show) so now I realize why it felt familiar.
  11. Just a small reminder Tokyo 2020 ceremonies weren't the only ones which suffered resignations from its staff. Four years ago I talked about how the original art director of the PC 2018 ceremonies resigned due to creative differences with the director (the later was considered much more experienced than the director himself). There is more info about it here http://news.sbs.co.kr/news/endPage.do?news_id=N1003757002 Jung Gu-Ho, (정구호 , art director) was very liked by korean netizens and some in 2017 thought the PC ceremonies were completely doomed. Fortunately, the worst was avoided and they could make a decent show.
  12. Don't summon Baron the trolls..... or else we'll have the 10000000th lecture about why Athens was a bad opening ceremony.
  13. The IOC realized the ban they did was a meme and Russians gave zero f**s about it, celebrating and cheering for their athletes anyway despite not being able to use the Russian flag. They consider "annoying the Globohomo west" a token of honor now, much like all of the anti-western nations do these days. Russia should had been banned alltogether but we all know how greedy the IOC is anyway. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Russia gets it, specially now that few if any wants the Olympics anymore.
  14. Thank god the Paralympics opening had much more soul. Kudos to the organizing comittee for saving Tokyo 2020 face ceremonies wise.
  15. Couldn't watch it live due to work, sadly, but i've just finished watching it. All I can say is wow.....what a missed opportunity the Olympics had to make a good opening ceremony. The Paralympic one, while still having an unavoidable simplicity due to the current times we're living, was much funnier, much tender and gave a message of hope which is what the games are about. Also, you can tell the ceremonies team of the Paralympics had much less issues since they kept a coherent theme at all times (Para Airport, the one winged airplane story), while in the Olympics you can tell from a mile all the last minute changes/cancellations/quarrels the organizers had with a lot of mashed up segments which made no sense. The people who solely blamed Covid for the Opening Ceremony of last month being awful have zero facts to back up their arguments anymore. Congratulations to the Paralympic Organizing Comittee for their wonderful work. This is how you do a Covid era ceremony.
  16. I actually was going to drop/ignore this opening after the catastrophe which were the Olympic ones, but after seeing the rehearsals it seems this show is going to mop the floor with the Olympics ceremonies. It still looks simple and with heavy use of projections but at least it seems to be a much coherent show with a common theme connecting it which the Olympic one didn't as a result of all the controversies/changes in the ceremonies team.
  17. Emperor Naruhito will be present for the opening of the Paralympics. https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/832d720d2262c2069cc2ecf28448915dc6bbfc49 Also....because of the shitshow which happened after the names of the staff involved in the Olympics ceremonies were revealed when a couple of them got Cancelled, the Paralympics organizing comittee decided to refrain from announcing the production team members of the Paralympics opening. Seems they wanna avoid the same mess to repeat again. https://www.nikkansports.com/olympic/tokyo2020/paralympic/news/202108190000702.html
  18. Ah yes, the Stockholm 2004 bid which, much like with the 2026 one, no one in Sweden wanted. They went to the extreme of literally bombing both the Olympic Stadium and Ullevi Stadium (Gotheburg) as a sign of protest and to also scare people from voting Stockholm in 1997. https://www.nytimes.com/1997/08/25/world/another-blast-in-sweden-during-bid-for-olympics.html They wanted to build a whole new stadium. Half of the tribunes would be temporary, though, since a permanent 70.000 spectators stadium for Stockholm was ridiculous. There is more info about the project here. https://www.oma.com/projects/stockholm-olympic-stadium
  19. Fun fact, that interpretation of the Italian anthem during the handover was very controversial in Italy back in the day with politicians who thought it was too much of a free adaptation of Fratelli D'Italia (the song was also used briefly during the transmissions of 2002 World Cup but due to controversy it was retired from RAI). I frankly don't see anything wrong with it. In a similar way to Tokyo handover, but not as bad, I had lots of expectations for Torino ceremonies because of their handover. I don't dislike their ceremonies as much as I did back then but I still don't think they were my favorites from the 2000s (then again it was the decade of Athens and Beijing which are still unsurpassable ceremonies for myself).
  20. Hey everyone. Just wanted to friendly remind i'll believe a boycott when I see it and when governments/companies stop being greedy cowards and wanting the Chinese market which, spoiler, it hasn't happened yet. Have a nice day~
  21. They wanted it to be a big show. Well, at least Mikiko wanted to. But she couldn't stand the toxic environment and Japan obsession with respect to elders who still think their ways work in 2021. Thus, she resigned, the whole ceremony team fell like a house cards and the disaster which we all know happened. https://aramajapan.com/news/tokyo-2020-opening-ceremony-original-plan-leaks-in-full/114631/
  22. David Atkins produced the show but all of the performers were canadian and i'm pretty sure Atkins also brought in some talents to be in charge of aspects of the ceremonies. Ironically, Australia used a british production company for both 2006 and 2018 CWG (Jack Morton) and I remember the Gold Coast decision was heavily criticized back then though in the end they're producers who are still using native talent to create a show.
  23. I think its reliable enough. For a lot of weeks i've seen people in japanese social media talking about how Dentsu ruined the opening ceremony and how they're also the most despised company in Japan at the moment due to many of their shady actions. The reddit user did their homework pretty well, but a lot of weebs are still in damage control and blaming this mess at the IOC and the pandemic.
  24. All this catastrophe regarding the organization of the opening ceremony just highlights heavily everything which is wrong with Japan right now and why they have fallen behind in the innovative area compared to their neighbours China and Korea. Too sad that the young innovative people are always trampled by a bunch of boomers because of muh respect to the eldery (Japan only has one Unicorn city, in fact (a term used for the most innovative cities ) which is Fukuoka, coincidentally the city with the largest number of younger people in the country. Embarassing for a nation which many have promoted to be a hub of innovation). Like I said before, Japan really can't into opening/closing ceremonies. Next time they host an Olympics I know i'll do best to sleep well that day and don't bother to wake up to watch it. PS: I see the only things they kept from the original plan in the end were the Drones (though heavily watered down) and the cauldron (only the sphere/flower part of it though).
