  1. Someone piss in your corn flakes again? I was one of the few proponents of the PC bid here on these boards. Who the hell knows which of the IOC members actually view this site? No point in unnecessarily criticizing any of the voters or their countries until after the vote.
  2. What would Canada stand to gain from a Quebec bid? The country doesn't need another Winter Games right now.
  3. Bravo Vancouver. I can't even pinpoint the greatest benefit or legacy, there's just too many to choose from.
  4. Oh wow. I've refrained from posting here on the off chance that I offend the Sheikh of Qatar, but now that the 2018 race is done, I just need to say that Qatar hosting the WC is the stupidest idea ever. Should've gone to Australia or the US. There, I feel better just getting that off my chest.
  5. Toronto, you are next on my wish list.
  6. That first photo with the blooded girl is especially sickening. It's bad enough to burn property and loot stores, but have the decency to do so, if you must, with your fellow neighbours in mind.
  7. I think he just wants to make some allies on this board.
  8. Here's a video of the PyeongChang bid, with a message from Yuna Kim.
  9. As if they would've ever given it back once in Russia. It was only an "accident" because it was intercepted in Toronto.
  10. It was the best Winter Olympics ever for me. Scratch that. It was the best Olympics PERIOD for me. It was the first I got to see in person, and it has truly converted me into an Olympic fan! I was always somewhat interested in it (especially with Pyeongchang bidding), but seeing the crowds really into it and the way we bonded made my Olympic experience just that much more memorable. It'll be a tough act to follow for any new host!
  11. I will also be in Vancouver for a week. I'll be at the men's hockey Finland-Germany game, and ladies figure skating!
  12. It's even funnier reading the comments on the Facebook group. They're all convinced this calls for a Canadian Charter application. I mean, the situation is unfortunate, but the judges couldn't have summed up the reasoning any better.
  13. Agreed. With the funding put into research and training programs the past 5-6 years, Canada is good enough to win medals without restricting access to venues to other countries. Sure, we haven't done anything technically wrong by giving other teams the minimum amount required to practise, but in cases where the venues wouldn't be used at a certain time, why not just let others use it? This is just the VANOC's way of justifying the millions poured into the Own the Podium progam. (Just imagine the public outcry if Canada had a poor showing despite all that money spent) We don't need this justification since Canada's good enough to win without any advantage. This Own the Podium money WAS well spent in that it gives our athletes every chance to compete on the world stage. BUT the rest should be up to the athletes themselves, not some home advantage. Canadian Olympic athletes won't have home advantage in 2014, nor will they for a long time. They might as well get used to learning to win under equal conditions sooner rather than later. There's such a thing as goodwill. I don't care what other countries do when they host. The Games, when they're hosted in Canada, should be a festival of sport rather than trying to top the medal standings (Within reason, of course. If we were in danger of not winning a single gold like back in '88, then maybe our priorities would change). The medals we win would be a lot sweeter if we left other athletes with no excuses after the races/competitions.
  14. I haven't been following this too closely, but what's the point of Toronto hosting the Pan Am games? I'd love to see Toronto host the Olympics, but the Pan Am games are 4th rate. You'd be hard-pressed to find people in the city that actually care about the Pan Am games. I could see why Rio bid and hosted the 2007 Pan Ams, since this was their way of showing the world that they could host world-class events. But this isn't the case for Toronto, and I'm skeptical of any kind of revenue that could be generated from these games. The Pan Am games should go to smaller cities with no chance of hosting the Olympics.
  15. Strong finishing kick propels Canada Agree or disagree? One part of me wants Canada to specialize more in certain events to rack up the medals, but an even bigger part of me wants to continue with our "egalitarian nature" so all youth get at least some funding for their efforts, no matter which sport. As much as I'd like Canada to dominate the Olympics, looking at the bigger picture I'm somewhat happy that we're well-rounded in many sports, as opposed to say Jamaica who's higher up in the standings but only excels in athletics.
  16. 5. Park Tae-Hwan winning South Korea's first-ever Olympic swimming medals, a gold and silver in the freestyle races. 4. Carol Huynh securing Canada's first medal (gold) a week into the Games, and her emotional cries on the podium, which set off a flurry of medals for the Canadian nation in the second week. 3. The resurgence of Great Britain. Especially great to see them rule the waves. Are they poised to become an Olympic powerhouse once again? 2. Phelps. I'm tired of hearing about this guy, but 8 golds is 8 golds. 1. Usain Bolt and his electric performances. He's shattered records, he's got personality, he's a youngster, he's a Jamaican sprinter actually running for Jamaica, and best of all he endeared himself to China's earthquake victim kids. He's got it all, and Rogge can stuff it.
  17. No pardon needed. Korea didn't really have any dominant sport like Australia with swimming or the US with swimming/athletics. They did win 5 medals in archery, and 4 each in Taekwondo and Judo, but they still won a medal in 14 different sports. And of course my favourite was Park Tae-Hwan, the 18 year old (turning 19) who won Korea's first-ever medals in swimming, with a gold in the 400 metre freestyle, and silver in the 200 metre freestyle (losing gold to Phelps). Park has become larger than life in Korea these days due to the significance of his medals. Hopefully he'll be back in London with a vengeance!
  18. Oh yes, this makes perfect sense! Let's just do away with a sport because one single competitor kicked an official in the face. And bad judging? Like that's never happened before, in the history of any sport. Here's an idea: better judges?
  19. The Canadian performance wasn't disappointing per se, but it would be nice to start owning the podium more and break the 3-gold pattern. That almost-4th gold by Van Koev would've topped off an excellent second week. For a country that has the resources and the population to make things happen, things can be a lot better. We should use both our first week failures and second week heroics to build momentum.
  20. Another success story, albeit on a smaller scale, is South Korea's new record of 13 gold medals, surpassing their previous 12 golds in Seoul and Barcelona. I'm also pleased with their 31 total medals (falling short of only Seoul '88) and another top 7-10 finish. Now they need to start aiming higher. I want those lucrative swimming medals!
  21. "Thou shall not hit the person wearing this t-shirt." I have to buy me one of those! But getting back to the article, that's quite a heavy challenge. As if it's that easy for millions to learn another language in one year. But I applaud the intention.
  22. Yes, where did all the bikes go?? I was there 9 years ago, and the city was full of bicycles!
