What an incredible performance by Canada. They had no business winning against Australia after 70 minutes down a player.

I heard on the radio today that Qatar will spend over $200 billion to host this tournament. With the obvious caveat that this is not an official figure, that seems like a scary number. Is it likely that democratic countries that would need to build new stadiums will be scared away from the World Cup the same way they have been frightened of hosting the winter Olympics after Sochi's $51 billion expense?
They really should have bid for the Club World Cup instead.
1) It is held in the winter anyway so there would be no need to ruin the club calendar.
2) They would only need two stadiums instead of twelve.
3) Teams are allowed to buy players, so it wouldn't matter that they don't have many domestic players.
That wouldn't do, nobody pays attention to that (relative to the World Cup or even the Champion's League).

Canada basketball training camp roster announced today. No Wiggins, no Murray, no Olynyk, no Tristan Thompson (obviously). In summary, we're actually fucking screwed for the qualification tournament.
So... who's there?

Funny promo poking at his infamous anti-Latin America speech
Kinda wish Canada was in Copa America's Centennial too.
Well, not having a good team plus being given the hardest qualifying path of any eligible team made it pretty unlikely form the start sadly.

Can't say I'd be upset to see Pyeongchang take inspiration of Sochi's look - it looked great.

Nice to see construction is going along well. By the looks of it these will be quite telegenic games.

Are you sure about that? Because it's saying the US won the softball gold medal and Canada won the men's baseball gold medal
Holy hell didn't realize the Union Pearson Express finally opened! That damn line could have helped me out a lot when I traveled there in November of 2012 and December of 2014! Having to take the Rocket bus all the way to Kipling then taking the green and yellow subway was a pain in the ass! Did anyone take it while they were there??? And if so, what was the travel time from the airport to Union station?
Yes. US won the 1-2 Page playoff game (usefully called the semifinals), Canada won the grand finals.

Well, Uruguay left it late but they have their first gold medal of the event, wining the (U22) men's football.
Only one gold medal left to decide: men's volleyball. It will go to either Brazil or Argentina.
Canada also got one last gold medal, in women's softball. Not the bat and ball gold medal I was expecting today, truth be told.

Europe's Group A is brutal.
Also, still really disappointed in how dependent on luck Europe's and Africa's qualification systems are.

Lets renew the Brazil - Canada rivalry once Canada is a world power in Football and Brazil is a world power in Ice Hockey

Do you want me to discuss the Canadian stereotypes here? I leave it for Americans.
I rest my case.

Relax Danny, Brazil has a great reputation in Canada, it's thought of fondly by many people here, it was probably an honest mistake by some young and ignorant volunteers.
I don't know. When I ask my fellow Canadians on the street what comes to mind when they think of Brazilians the most common answer I get is "Brazilians are really sensitive about any perceived or real slight and they tend to take things that where meant in jest quite seriously". In those words exactly.

Andre De Grasse won his semifinal heat in 9.97 seconds. Only 2 other Canadian sprinters have ever run 100m in less than 10 seconds
Wind assisted, it should be noticed.

Is this a real historical record? Or is this a record under the current format, which was probably changed two competitions ago and will be changed again two competitions from now.
Either way I have a hard time taking modern pentathlon "records" seriously due to the strength of the field mattering in the fencing portion and the course / horse draw mattering in the show jumping portion.
That Canada vs USA final was the best baseball game
I'm not sure I'd say it was an amazing game but it certainly had an interesting ending. Canada got insanely lucky in the bottom of the tenth (not that I'm complaining).

Is it just me or is Taekwendo, as a sport, greatly improved (especially since the 2008 Olympics)? The matches have been great so far.

Two disappointing races to begin things tonight in the pool.
Fox hopefully you see this. Is the Canadian wrestling team the A team that is going to the Worlds in Vegas or is it a mix? Because the results have been disappointing thus far.
Can't really help you there, I don't follow wrestling.

Nice surprise to see Canada first after day one. Obviously won't last though

Why am I surprised?

The broadcast for the Canada - Dominica game was really awful. One camera, bad lighting and the audio and the video where out of synch. Hopefully the production value will be significantly higher for the game in Toronto.

Am I the only one that thinks the America's Cup is a bit of a joke? There is awesome racing when they actually bother to race, but all the behind the scene legal battles and the arbitrary changes of classes makes the event hard to take too seriously IMO.

Also, who the hell gives something a 7.9/10?

Eugene is going to awfully refreshing after Doha in 2019.

The venues I've seen so far are pretty stunning. The shooting venue, especially, looks really, really nice for, well, a shooting venue.
Which one will win and what is the vote difference?

I’m not sure how it was in person but on TV the 2018 World Allround were spectacular. I’d really like to see that kind of setup tried at an Olympics.
