What an incredible performance by Canada. They had no business winning against Australia after 70 minutes down a player.

There will be a three hole (followed by sudden death as needed) playoff for a tie for any medal.

I heard on the radio today that Qatar will spend over $200 billion to host this tournament. With the obvious caveat that this is not an official figure, that seems like a scary number. Is it likely that democratic countries that would need to build new stadiums will be scared away from the World Cup the same way they have been frightened of hosting the winter Olympics after Sochi's $51 billion expense?
They really should have bid for the Club World Cup instead.
1) It is held in the winter anyway so there would be no need to ruin the club calendar.
2) They would only need two stadiums instead of twelve.
3) Teams are allowed to buy players, so it wouldn't matter that they don't have many domestic players.
That wouldn't do, nobody pays attention to that (relative to the World Cup or even the Champion's League).

Canada basketball training camp roster announced today. No Wiggins, no Murray, no Olynyk, no Tristan Thompson (obviously). In summary, we're actually fucking screwed for the qualification tournament.
So... who's there?

I have to admit I'm pretty impressed with the golf course. Considering all the issues and controversies it looks like the end product was a pretty fine venue. Lets hope there's enough demand for a public course in Rio to justify it's existence long term.

Funny promo poking at his infamous anti-Latin America speech
Kinda wish Canada was in Copa America's Centennial too.
Well, not having a good team plus being given the hardest qualifying path of any eligible team made it pretty unlikely form the start sadly.

Seriously - there is no Team GB - pathetic that the home nations can't get their act together and send a team!
What? GB qualified (through England's 2015-16 7s world series ranking) in both men's and women's Rugby 7s and is sending a team in both.

According to the report Alexander Legkov, the two and four man bob teams lead by Alexandr Zubkov and Alexander Tretiakov are the gold medalists that where allegedly doping. The report also alleges the entire cross country team and the entire women's ice hockey team was doping.

...scandal wise....we need more information. Turkey isn't exactly looking too much sympathetic at the moment.
Ya, the IOC dodged a bullet choosing Tokyo. It has problems, but it's much safer to host there than in Spain or Turkey in 2020.

Amusingly, the best senior women's ski slopestyle athlete, Kelly Sildaru, can't compete because she is too young.
Magnus Kim - a Korean kid (half Korean?) - just bet the local Nordic kids at the cross country. Apparently this is an upset.
He is a dual Korean-Norwegian citizen. He was born and raised in Norway and he trains there. He has South Korean citizenship through his mother.

Canada has to really, really regret that one point loss to Venezuela. France is a tough opponent.

I'm wondering, how much does it cost to build a sliding centre made out of natural ice (like Saint Moritz does every year) and is there any rule against host countries doing that as opposed to building an artificial track? You'd only really need to build it for three years (homolgation, test event and the games proper).

A two run downhill sounds like a good idea
It really doesn't. The whole point of downhill is the endurance required. A two run "downhill" would be something entirely different than a downhill.
That being said, I'd love to see the Olympic downhill have a qualification race that cuts down the field to 30 and that seeds the starting order.

Qatar secure handball spot at Rio 2016 with Asian qualification tournament success
And with that, the dream of an Asian-born male competing in Handball at the 2016 Olympics dies.

Can't say I'd be upset to see Pyeongchang take inspiration of Sochi's look - it looked great.
-
Pretty expected field in Rugby 7s so far. The only real potential upset outside of the Colombian women would be South Africa not qualifying on the women's side, but that's a self inflicted blow from the South African Olympic committee, not a failure of the team to qualify.

Nice to see construction is going along well. By the looks of it these will be quite telegenic games.

Do Samoa get Japan's qualifying spot, given that Japan have now effectively qualified twice?
Also, I don't want to taunt you Alex but...NZ v France......:scared:
No.

Of these I'm only really comfortable with Skateboarding and perhaps Baseball/Softball if they add two more teams.
Combined climbing is a worse format than three separate events, surfing is stupid costly away from good natural venues and doesn't translate well on TV and Karate is incredibly boring (except for team kata, which isn't even proposed).
At least adding Skateboarding would be a bold statement and it's a cheap sport to host. Vert as a third event would be nice.

Surely now there is no way Japan loses the hosting rights for 2019...

I feel like I'm in the minority, but I actually like having aquatic events held outside, at least once in a while. I feel that adjusting to competing both indoors and outdoors is, and should be, part of the challenge of competitive swimming, diving, water polo and synchro swimming. There has been recent world championships and Olympics held outdoors and, while it's perhaps not the ideal setting for world records and PBs, it remains fair. It can also create beautiful settings for TV.

What we have got is a more clustered event that focusses on London. Pack 'em in for less cost. Still I hope it gets going this comming week.
All Blacks arrive today and are welcomed at Tower Of London...As if that's gonna intimidate them...
If nothing else, the All Blacks are going to intimidate the Tower of London.

What's interesting about the Nigerians' second consecutive Olympic basketball trip lies in the fact that this team is significantly made up of Americans of Nigerian lineage.
10 of the 12 players where born in the US, the other two players where born in Nigeria but also have American and British citizenships respectively.

AP is reporting that, according to date from the Rio de Janeiro state government, the water at the triathlon venue (which is holding a test event this week-end) is unfit for swimming due to a high concentration of fecal bacteria. Hopefully they find an alternative venue for triathlon / open water swimming.
Which one will win and what is the vote difference?

I’m not sure how it was in person but on TV the 2018 World Allround were spectacular. I’d really like to see that kind of setup tried at an Olympics.
