Today is the day: OCOG 2030 will be officially created today, at Groupama Stadium (fun fact: Groupama is a rival of Allianz, one of IOC's TOP sponsors; I'm sure a lot of people from IOC are very happy of that choice). To celebrate that event, L'Équipe and Le Parisien each publish an article. L'Équipe presents what are going to be the first challenges facing Edgar Grospiron (finally signing the host contract, the final list of venues, the budget and above all, what he'll be allowed to do), whereas Le Parisien (https://www.leparisien.fr/sports/JO/jo-alpes-2030-coups-bas-cacophonie-et-incompetences-les-coulisses-dun-dossier-trop-politique-et-mal-ne-17-02-2025-DH3T6B5LF5D5HDICUDQCNTKK3E.php) summarizes what happened so far with some extra details, describing the bid as "an overly political and ill-conceived project" with two main troublemakers: the two region leaders, Laurent Wauquiez and Renaud Muselier. Cause these two /*CENSORED*/ saw a big problem at Paris 2024 (I quote the article): "the OCOG was guilty in their eyes of overshadowing political power". Muselier didn't like that, during his speech at the opening ceremony, Tony Estanguet thanked Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris, but not Valérie Pécresse, president of île-de-France region (and member of the same political party than Muselier). Spoiler alert: it's Paris that was the host city, not the Île-de-France region. Wauquiez and Muselier are now convinced they are messiahs that led a successful express bid while in reality, IOC gave them the Games because they didn't really have a better option. An unknown source says about Wauquiez «He's unbearable but he has charisma [...] It was very attractive for IOC at the outset». Furthermore, when the French Alps were chosen as preferred host in late 2023, the State was already busy with Paris 2024, so it lets the two regions manage everything. Several person acted as mediators between all involved parties, but have given up. Macron's consultant about sports left at the end of 2024 and the president of the French NOC, David Lappartient, is busy with his campaign for IOC presidency. The last one remaining is Michel Barnier, yet another politician. Meanwhile, the sport movement in manhandled. When Martin Fourcade gave up, it was obvious for everyone that Edgar Grospiron was the best choice for president (given that everyone agreed to let the presidency to an athlete). But to show that their project was so good, they contacted a lot of athletes, asking them if they could be interested, to have a crowded field of candidates only to ditch them a few weeks later. That's why, for example, Teddy Riner has been mentioned. Next problem: the list of venues. The two dudes accepted to equally share the events between the two regions. But most of the already-existing venues are in the AURA region. That's why all the ice rinks are going to be packed in Nice. Quoting the article: "Decisions [about the venues] are not supported by technical studies. The vision of 2030 Games is yet to be imagined, but the venues have already been chosen". Other problem with the venues: in 2023, IOC complained about the venues being too spread. So, each region chose to remove one of its sites. Wauquiez decided to remove Val-d'Isère, but people in Val-d'Isère complained so Wauquiez asked for Val-d'Isère to be reintegrated, then he saw the cost to create a new hub around Val-d'Isère (60 million € for accommodation, TV equipment...). An expert says "We already injects 500 M€ of public funds in an OCOG budget (2.1 billion €) struggling to balance and nobody asked themselves if we can afford to add a venue. We just want to please local representatives." One more example about the venues: speed skating (the article mentions short-track, but it is more likely to be long-track). Possible locations are Nice, Italy, Netherlands and... Monaco, which have been contacted to host it in its stadium (and making Monaco pay for it). Oh yeah, another thing: Wauquiez decided that the opening ceremony would be at Groupama Stadium (athletes' villages are three hours away). "He has ideas, leaks them to the press so it becomes facts". To be fair with him, Nice's mayor did the same for the closing ceremony... The two regions wants to host the Games, but not to pay for them. The two regional presidents blame the sport movement to be too rich (sports budget has just been reduced, and it could have been even worse if the athletes didn't protested) and the IOC to ask for too much money (IOC is giving 700 million €). Current budget incomes might be a little bit ambitious to limit regions' spending: current plans are to sell 100,000 tickets for each competition day in Nice... But the two regions also hopes that it will be the occasion for the State to pay for equipment that won't be really needed for the Games: the article mentions a railroad between Marseille and Briançon, costing several hundred million. Finally, the sponsors. Remember when Hidalgo vetoed a sponsorship with Total, claiming it went against ecological ambitions of Paris 2024? Wauquiez is already dealing with Total to obtain a sponsorship. An anonymous person involved in the bid is quoted at the end of the article: "The Games will be beautiful because France knows how to host events. But what will be remembered from a project costing hundreds of millions of public money?" Let's not forget that Paris 2024 OCOG announced a surplus in its final budget.

Don't know if it's technically possible or even sustainable, but would it be possible for the IOC to purchase several temporary arenas, that could be lent to organizing committees for different editions of Olympics / YOG / any other event that could require that kind of equipment but doesn't have the means of Olympics? If a city doesn't have a specific venue for a sport, IOC could say "Don't build anything, we already have a temporary equipment adapted to <insert event here>". Cause seen from the inside, it's just a huge bunch of metallic tubes with seats on top.

After the Grammys, their French equivalent, the Victoires de la Musique. Paris 2024 ceremonies won the concert of the year award. With a live performance of Parade, of course. https://www.france.tv/france-2/les-victoires-de-la-musique-varietes/6955021-victor-le-masne-insuffle-un-air-de-nostalgie-des-jo.html

For tourism, there are already data for 2024 in Paris and its region. There were 1.7 million international tourists during Olympics, compared to 1.5 million in 2023. +21% from USA, +65% from China, +94% from Japan, +110% from Brazil. https://parisjetaime.com/eng/media/article/preliminary-report-olympic-games-a1755 And don't forget that the opening ceremony was a 4-hour ad for visiting Paris broadcasted in all the countries of the world, let's see how much people have been convinced to do a trip in the coming years. You've also talked about broadcasting and content creation. One thing that everybody seems to enjoy a lot recently without acknowledging its impact is AI. It's VERY energy-consuming and it doesn't seem to be a subject at all. After each Games, OBS brags about its increased production of content and its advanced technologies, but it has an increasing cost: NKH had a 8K theatre in the broadcasting center and Intel even had a booth promoting 8K broadcasting but nobody asked themselves if it was relevant. If you want to see more, here's a video (in French) visiting the International Broadcast Center (and france⋅tv's control room).

Nathalie Péchalat was France's Chef de Mission at Beijing 2022 and she was also the one in charge of Club France at Paris 2024. No financial results yet but it was a popular success. Sarah Abitbol still does skating shows and coaching in France and US, she also works with her organization against sexual assault in sports, taking part into the creation of a law. Vincent Jay was initially the candidate of AURA region. If he's selected, he'll be Wauquiez's puppet. It's quite the same for Marie Martinod, but for PACA region. Edgar Grospiron was the first leader of the Annecy 2018 bid. He resigned due to the lack of resources given to the bid. Couldn't find anything about Jean-Luc Crétier's recent activities, except he's into business. All six participated in previous Winter Games and are aged between 39 and 58. Le Monde also says that six people are shortlisted (https://www.lemonde.fr/sport/article/2025/02/12/jo-d-hiver-2030-six-candidats-pour-presider-le-futur-comite-d-organisation-des-alpes-francaises_6543539_3242.html) but instead of Sarah Abitbol, they mention Gérard Holtz. He was a sports journalist for france⋅tv from the 80s to 2016. He's now doing theater and writes books about sports. He's 78.

OCOG's foundation is confirmed to take place next Tuesday, February 18, at Groupama Stadium, located, as the future OCOG headquarters, in the OL Vallée activity zone. Six candidates remain for the presidency: Vincent Jay, Marie Martinod, Edgar Grospiron, Nathalie Péchalat, Jean-Luc Crétier and Sarah Abitbol. https://www.lequipe.fr/Tous-sports/Actualites/Jo-d-hiver-le-cojop-alpes-2030-lance-au-groupama-stadium-de-lyon/1539433

I visited an exhibition at the Paris town hall about last year's Olympics and Paralympics named Les Jours Heureux (the English name of the exhibition seems to be Golden Days, but the literal translation is Happy Days). It mainly displays pictures but also some objects: medals (not rusted), torch, dresses. The entrance is free, but a reservation is needed. It is opened up to March 1. I've been to Paris a few times since the Games ended and I have a strange feeling: each time, the remaining traces of Paris 2024 in the city are disappearing even more (the pink signage, the banners...) but somehow, the Games are still here (that exhibition, the rings in front of the Eiffel tower, the cauldron coming back next summers)...

More details. https://www.lequipe.fr/Tous-sports/Article/-il-y-a-le-feu-au-lac-avec-le-renoncement-de-martin-fourcade-les-jo-d-hiver-de-2030-ont-perdu-leur-figure-de-proue/1537546 A crisis meeting took place today. About twenty people have been considered for president. Marie Martinod and Vincent Jay are still candidates, but others have been approached: the article mentions Edgar Grospiron (director general of Annecy 2018 bid, he left before the vote) and Perrine Pelen (director of Alpine World Ski Championships 2023). The IOC (who supported Fourcade, he's an IOC member after all) will have its say. Fun fact: the host city contract has still not been signed. The IOC waits for the OCOG creation and the adoption of the first financial guarantee. And to complete what @sebastien1214 said above: if you enjoyed the creativity of Paris 2024, don't expect any of that for 2030, it will be budget above all.

Martin Fourcade gives up, he won't be the president of the 2030 OCOG. Too much disagreements with other stakeholders. https://www.lequipe.fr/Tous-sports/Actualites/Martin-fourcade-renonce-a-la-presidence-du-comite-d-organisation-des-jo-2030/1537346#xtor=RSS-1

The cauldron will come back to its initial spot, at the Tuileries, from June 23 (Olympic day) to September 14 (the new national day of sport) and it will come back each year until 2028 at the same dates. https://www.francetvinfo.fr/les-jeux-olympiques/info-franceinfo-jeux-olympiques-la-vasque-sera-de-retour-a-paris-tous-les-etes-jusqu-aux-jo-de-los-angeles_7047494.html

The mystery of the rusting medals has been solved. Due to regulatory changes, a new varnish had to be used and it appears it's not good enough. The problem is not limited to Olympic medals: Huawei, who regularly orders medals to give to its best employees, has returned 12,000 medals. About the Games, more than 100 medals have been returned and they should be replaced in the coming weeks, with the support of a specialized company. Because of that problem, three directors have left the organization. https://www.lalettre.fr/fr/action-publique_operateurs-de-l-etat/2025/01/13/comment-la-monnaie-de-paris-est-tombee-du-podium-avec-ses-medailles-olympiques,110359982-gel Meanwhile, at the OCOG... In a report made late December, there were 64 people left. 12 should stay until the formal dissolution of the committee in June. The main activities are leaving parties, administrative tasks and packing all remaining stuff. Including the Phryges: some fans tried to buy costumes, but it has been rejected. Two costumes are in LA28 headquarters. The Olympic museum recently received one. The Seine-Saint-Denis département bought two of them (6500€). https://www.francetvinfo.fr/les-jeux-olympiques/reportage-mais-tu-travailles-encore-pour-les-jo-avec-les-tout-derniers-salaries-de-paris-2024-entre-nostalgie-et-angoisse-du-vide_6984866.html

Here comes a new challenger to be the final home of the cauldron: Hangar Y. Located in Meudon, a few kilometers to the south-west of Paris, built by Gustave Eiffel in 1878, it was the first airship hangar in the world (here's the relationship with the hot air balloon). Refurbished a few years ago, it now hosts business meetings and artistic events. Maintenance costs are also indicated: 2.5 million euros for the initial recommissioning, 1 million each year for all maintenance costs and 300,000 for each re-inflation of the balloon. Whatever location is chosen, the cauldron should be installed before next summer. Next artifact: the Olympic rings on the Eiffel tower. It's still planned to install new rings on the tower. The IOC agrees so much that they paid feasibility studies. The main obstacle will be administration, to have all authorizations. It is expected for these rings to be installed before the end of 2025. Meanwhile, another set of rings are installed on the Pont d'Iéna, between the Eiffel tower and the Trocadéro. Any city that hosted a competition or had a venue, even a training site, can submit a request to the IOC to install Olympic rings in its city (for 15,000€). Rings have already been installed in the Olympic village. Another set is planned to be installed at Parc Georges-Valbon, starting line of the Paralympic marathon and huge celebration site during the Games. Stade de France will, of course, also have its rings, but construction works are already planned and rings will have to wait (and with a new concession agreement expected for this year, who knows what may happen). https://www.leparisien.fr/paris-75/vasque-olympique-esperee-a-meudon-anneaux-sur-la-tour-eiffel-les-symboles-des-jeux-de-paris-bientot-de-retour-01-01-2025-KGJ5DCIARJCXLMBY35L7XGHZFA.php
