  1. Because the timeline is already reduced, you do not want to waste more time pursuing something that may or may not work when you can instead pursue an alternative that has a greater chance of working out. also remember that they still need to conduct site visits, and that's not really something you can organize in an instant If this process was happening a year ago when it was supposed to, then yeah they could have put it to the test, but now it's just too late to wait on a nation to get themselves together when there's already one ready to deliver what is needed. not to mention, if Sweden genuinely wanted the Games, then why did they wait for so long to create and present their candidature? We had like a whole 2 years of it just being Salt Lake City and Sapporo in the race, they definitely could have started doing something then. I really don't think they have a right to complain about the 2030 process... that being said, i do agree that the 2032 process came out of no where, and there was no reason for the IOC to do that in 2021. it's probably the reason they ended up with a not so great 2030 process
  2. Is Canada appealing the new ISU rankings? they definitely should because this is totally wrong on so many levels
  3. the guarantee was not needed at this stage. the issue was that the IOC believed they may not receive a guarantee at all when it would be necessary "Strategy to securing a Games Delivery Guarantee from a public authority was not sufficiently substantiated to provide comfort that the guarantee would be provided in a Targeted Dialogue"
  4. last post regarding roblox because i dont want to derail the thread - in 2022 someone recreated the entire Winter Olympic programme (plus some Para-sports) and held an actual 16 day competition that ran at the same time as Beijing 2022, that included opening and closing ceremonies: Opening Ceremony replay: Closing Ceremony replay: unfortunately I believe the IOC found out and got the game removed due to obvious copyright issues, but it might be something for them to consider doing officially if they want to engage in the virtual experience and gaming world
  5. idea: just recreate the olympics in roblox. it's been done before, and as a gold medalist in biathlon from one such recreation, i can confirm it is fun and makes you feel like a true olympian (this is partially a joke, but considering how far roblox games have come, it might low key be a better alternative than some of the proposed games...)
  6. The only content info that is public for the closing ceremony is the name and description - Shine Again - As participants return to their homes, they start dreaming new dreams. The shining lights shone through Gangwon 2024 will sparkle once again, supporting each other’s tomorrows It'll take place outside in front of the Gangneung Hockey Centre (presumably where the digital cauldron is?) and will last for around 45 minutes. Afterwards there will be a party at the Gangneung Youth Olympic Village but I don't think that one will be streamed.
  7. My favorite podiums: Summer - Rio 2016 Winter - Vancouver 2010 and a special shout out to the Lausanne 2020 podium: ...i think there's a trend
  8. I believe so, that was my first thought when I read the headline. He probably wants something out of this
  9. My favorite highlight has to be from Donovan Carrillo's Beijing 2022 figure skating run. Seeing a Mexican person (as someone with both parents who were born and raised there) make it so far, even if he didn't win a medal, was so great to see. I hope he is able to compete again at Milano Cortina 2026 My earliest Winter Olympic memory is logging onto the Sochi 2014 website on a school computer the day after the opening ceremony and being sad that I missed it (I immediately proceeded to forget the Olympics were happening at all and did not interact with and consume Olympic content again until 2015...)
  10. yes, public transit is definitely improving over the last few years! Right now (or rather whenever I'm back home) I'm able to get to many of the proposed venues on rail easily, which will be very useful in 2028...
  11. Today, 25 January 2024, marked the 100th anniversary of the first Olympic Winter Games which were hosted by Chamonix, France. Since then, there has been a total of 24 editions across three continents, thirteen countries, twenty one host cities, and dozens of communities across the world. Feel free to share some of your favorite memories, stories, highlights, etc. from any winter games, whether you were there in person or watching from home
  12. becoming soaking wet from the rain will make you feel like you're the athlete on the whitewater course!
  13. yeahh December - March probably isn't the best time to visit in regards to the weather... My parents told me it's been raining a lot the past few days, but I think it should get better over the next few days. Enjoy your time in SoCal
  14. how will people and athletes get to the venues if conditions are dangerous to go outside
  15. I have discovered that Mexico is fielding an ice hockey team so I now know what I'll be focusing on during these Games
  16. Hey guys! Sorry for not participating in the thread, it was 3 AM here and I didn't want to disturb my roommate with the sounds of constant typing haha Anyways I did watch it live, and it was a fantastic ceremony! The video sequences were amazing and I like how the speed skating track was used for the torch relay and some of the performances. The anthems were very well performed, especially the Korean one. Music was 10/10, and they had great songs during the concert finale (and yeah, it definitely felt like a closing ceremony but I bet the athletes are much more comfortable competing here now!). Not to mention the artistic storyline itself - I loveee the space scenes. If there's one criticism I have, it would be the execution of the dual-venue concept. I feel like we could have gotten more footage from the PyeongChang Dome, or like having a performance there that connected to the main Gangneung Oval show (sort of like how Athens had a video of a drummer at Olympia that interacted with the drummer in Athens). I also believe some of the artists mentioned in the programme were actually performing at the Dome and not Gangneung, meaning we didn't see the full line up, which made many viewers on the YouTube stream confused as they were probably only watching the ceremony to see them perform. Fortunately the Olympic Channel does plan on uploading footage from the Dome on YouTube so we'll get to eventually see what went on over there. That being said, judging on what we did see, it was a great ceremony and sort of relatable in a way. But now, let the competitions begin.
  17. Yep! They didn't specify in the post I saw, but I just looked up the actual press release and they do mention it: https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/news/fifa-world-cup-2026-tm-match-schedule-to-be-announced-on-4-february "Match schedule announcement will include host city match allocations for the 104 matches of the tournament in 2026, as well as the locations of key matches, including the biggest showpiece match, the FIFA World Cup 26 final"
  18. For those with access to Instagram, a sneak peek has been uploaded: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2RFytxri3H/
  19. and now here its reversed with the legacy of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics being a springboard to a Youth Olympics
