  1. Feel like this question is particularly interesting today. What will FIFA do about the proposed breakaway for the European Super League? They've suggested players for the Super League teams wouldn't be allowed to play at the World Cup. Which Real Madrid President Florentino Perez responded to by saying if any players are not allowed to play in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar that they will create their own World Cup. Could this be the end of the FIFA World Cup as we know it? Or merely just a blip... It would certainly be bad news for Qatar who will have effectively pumped billions and billions into what could be a tier-b tournament. The Europa League of international tournaments, if you will.
  2. I've always wondered how well countries actually perform at Olympic games. The medal tables will tell you one story - always USA, China, Russia etc. However, these countries have huge advantages over some others. Namely money and population size. This research shows which countries out perform their status best - and I found it really interesting. The two variables looked at are: Gold medals per million people Gold medals per trillion dollars of national GDP You can see the full research here and see where your country ranked on the table - https://bitedge.com/blog/which-country-really-wins-the-olympics/ Top performing nations: Jamaica Cuba North Korea Poorly performing nations: India China USA It's good to see a table which gives weighting to the smaller nations, although the data has only been collected since 1996 to eliminate USSR and give consistent results. Are there any nations in there that surprised you? And is this research valid or are there flaws? Can we really call Jamaica the greatest Olympic nation in the world?
  3. I'm absolutely amazed they're still trying to host it across the whole of Europe. Surely there should be more heat on this than the Olympics? (not saying the heat on the Olympics to postpone is unjust)
  4. Sport in general feels pretty lame without fans - football being the main example. I agree with you, the adrenaline that a capacity crowd will pump through athletes will absolutely give them an edge. Some football matches have been dreadful with teams accepting draws/defeats in the most mundane of ways. If fans were there would 30k people shouting at them spur them on? Absolutely. I think some events will be more impacted than others. Sprinting will be hampered, but then some of the smaller events may not see much difference. At this stage though, I'm just looking forward to watching the greatest sporting event in the world - with or without fans (although with would be better).
