Because fundamentally the BOA knows if it pushes forward with going to Bejing history will not look kindly on it’s leaders. -

My guess is the BOA will announce by the end of the year the UK will boycott because the Goverment in the UK has one powerful weapon - the Funding allocation of Lottery funds could easily be banned if they don’t comply. -

The Lord Bishop of St Albans [V] What consideration have Her Majesty’s Government given to the suggestion of a diplomatic and economic, rather than full-scale, boycott of the 2022 Beijing winter Olympics, in response to China’s ongoing repression of the Uighur Muslim minority? Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay My right honourable friend the Prime Minister has made clear that we are not normally in favour of sporting boycotts. The broader question of the participation of the national team at the winter Olympics is a matter for the British Olympic Association, which is required to operate independently of the Government under the International Olympic Committee regulations. -

Jamie Stone (Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross) (LD) this specific contribution If he will make an assessment with Cabinet colleagues on the potential merits of Team GB boycotting the 2022 winter Olympic and Paralympic games in Beijing. (912800) The Minister for Asia (Nigel Adams)this specific contribution The hon. Member will no doubt have heard the Prime Minister highlight that we are not normally in favour of sporting boycotts. Along with that, participation of the national team at the winter Olympics is a matter for the British Olympic Association, which is required to operate independently of the Government under International Olympic Committee regulations. Jamie Stone [V] I am indeed aware of what the Prime Minister has said. Nevertheless, allies such as the United States and Canada have referred to what is going on in Xinjiang province as genocide. First, does the Minister agree that we should get international condemnation of these ghastly goings on in China? Secondly, in view of what the Prime Minister said, does the Minister agree that we should support those athletes who choose individually to boycott the winter Olympic and Paralympic games, as a demonstration of their opposition to this genocide? Nigel Adams We are leading international action, including at the UN, to hold China to account. We have led from the front. We have an increasing cohort of countries supporting our statements on the happenings in Xinjiang. This is a matter for the British Olympic Association and the individual sportsmen. The British Olympic Association is required to operate independently of Government, and rightly so, under the regulations set down by the International Olympic Committee. This is a matter for the Olympic organisations and individual sportsmen. -

Emma Hardy (Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle) (Lab) this specific contribution Given the actions and the rightful condemnation that the Foreign Secretary has announced today, does he still feel it will be appropriate to hold the winter 2022 Olympics in Beijing? Dominic Raab this specific contributiThe hon. Lady raises a perfectly legitimate question, but we have a long tradition in this country of keeping politics and sport separate. Of course, she will also know that that is an independent decision made by the sporting authorities, and not one for the Government. -

Does Mitt Romney not realise that an economic boycott by companies will likely see athletes be unable to attend due to their sponsors pulling them out? Due to how entangled everything is an economic boycott would likely not be viable. -

https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1105354/bach-beijing-2022-human-rights-concerns The International Olympic Committee (IOC) "is willing to hold a genocidal Games" by staging the Winter Olympics in Beijing, human rights groups claimed today, as President Thomas Bach insisted the organisation was not a "super-world Government" that can solve global issues. A group of human rights activists this week held an "Alternative Olympic Session" to highlight their concerns with Beijing's hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics amid what they claim is China's "genocide" against Uyghur Muslims. It was staged to coincide with the IOC's own Session, where Beijing 2022 and human rights were on the agenda but where there was no mention of the Uyghur Muslims or calls for the Chinese capital to be stripped of the Games. There has been widespread condemnation of Beijing's treatment of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang as well as its crackdown on protesters in Hong Kong and its policies towards Tibet and Taiwan. China has been accused of suppression and surveillance campaign against Muslim ethnic groups, which allegedly includes mass internment, forced sterilisation, the separation of children from their families and forced labour. Human rights groups allege more than one million Uyghurs have been placed in internment camps, but Beijing claims they are training centres designed to help stamp out Islamist extremism and separatism. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/mar/12/ioc-under-fire-after-dismissing-claims-of-genocide-against-uighurs-in-china -

A group of US senators has also introduced a resolution urging the IOC to remove the Games from China. Asked last week about a possible boycott, President Biden’s secretary of state, Anthony Blinken, refused to rule it out.' 'Even Amnesty International, the world’s leading human-rights organisation, does not support stopping athletes from competing, saying: “We believe that a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics would further reduce international access to China, which cannot help uncover human rights violations and push for improvements.” ' -

Co-founder and CEO of Hong Kong Watch, Benedict Rogers was in agreement, stating that "with regard to the Winter Olympics, either a boycott, or if we can put pressure on the IOC to think about moving the Olympics even at this late stage, my understanding is that some political groups in Canada have called for this, and have offered Canada as an alternative location, and there are a number of European countries of course that have the capability to host Winter Olympics." Senior parliamentarian Sir Iain Duncan Smith, a former leader of the British Conservative party, who is leading the debate in his country's parliament on the imposition of "Magnitsky" sanctions against the Chinese leadership, and who addressed the Brussels conference on that particular issue has also been vocal in calling for a boycott. -

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/sport/pompeo-calls-us-boycott-beijing-winter-olympics-china-14346690 WASHINGTON: Former secretary of state Mike Pompeo on Friday (Mar 5) backed calls for the United States to boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, saying China's "nasty" activity made it an inappropriate host. Pompeo, a vociferous critic of Beijing while he was Donald Trump's top diplomat, said the previous administration had tried in its final months to persuade the International Olympic Committee to move the Winter Games. "I hope that our athletes get a chance to participate in the Olympics. They very much deserve that," Pompeo told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. "But in the end, we cannot allow American athletes to travel to Beijing and reward the Chinese Communist Party all the while that they (are) doing all of the nasty activity that they're engaged in," he said. "The Olympics are an expression of freedom and athletic talent. And to hold them in Beijing is completely inappropriate." -

https://www.politico.eu/article/china-beijing-2022-winter-olympics-human-rights-violations-uighurs/ Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, a Dutch MP from the ruling coalition’s D66 party, pointed to “the largest detention of an ethnic minority since World War II” and highlighted stories of forced sterilization and rape as evidence that China should be stripped of the Olympics. Sjoerdsma, whose social liberal party initiated the Dutch motion to call the treatment of the Uighur minority a genocide, said athletes should decide for themselves whether to go to Beijing, but he would prefer that the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which organizes the games, assigned the event to another country. However, the Netherlands’ Olympic Committee sounded a note of caution about how far the country might be ready to go. In response to questions about a potential Dutch boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics, a spokesman for the committee said: “In the Netherlands, we have the policy that a sports boycott is only talked about if the Netherlands as a country participates in a larger international boycott involving several sectors. That is not the case.” -
