  1. The BOA absolutely does nit want to be seen as a genocide supporter.
  2. Activists are talking about softer forms of a boycott, but have not ruled out the kind of boycott led by the United States in the 1980 Moscow Olympics; 65 countries stayed away, including China, and 80 participated. "I think a diplomatic boycott would be very much welcomed by all of our communities. We have been looking towards accountability, and that is definitely part of that path toward accountability," said Zumretay Arkin, spokeswoman for the World Uyghur Congress. "Of course the athletes, it's unfair to them. But athletes also have a conscience, an opinion of their own," she added. https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/olympics-winter-2022-beijing-options-1.5977796
  3. The campaign to boycott in the UK is lead by Muslim and Jewish groups. By refusing to boycott they will be get marked as a pro genocide group. Also unlike 1980 their is now a massive campaign targeting sponsors to not sponsor even athletes going to Bejing.

  5. I suspect LA 2028 are worried on two fronts. Both above a revenge boycott but also the clear anti IOC position developing in the USA.

  7. It feels like members of the Biden Admin want a boycott more than the carrier diplomats working in the State Department.

  12. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/06/us-considering-joining-boycott-of-2022-beijing-olympics.html U.S. considering joining boycott of 2022 Beijing Olympics, State Department says The potential diplomatic boycott of the Olympic Games comes as the Biden administration works to rally allies to mount international pushback on China. The Olympic Games are due to take place between Feb. 4 to Feb. 20. The United States has not yet made a decision. WASHINGTON – The United States and its allies are considering a joint boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, the State Department said Tuesday. “It [a joint boycott] is something that we certainly wish to discuss,” State spokesman Ned Price told reporters when asked about the Biden administration’s plans ahead of the international games. “A coordinated approach will not only be in our interest but also in the interest of our allies and partners,” he added. Price said that the United States has not yet made a decision but was concerned about China’s egregious human rights abuses. The Olympic Games are due to take place between Feb. 4 to Feb. 20. The potential diplomatic boycott of the Olympic Games comes as the Biden administration works to rally allies to mount international pushback on China. Last month, the United States sanctioned two Chinese officials, citing their roles in serious human rights abuses against ethnic minorities in Xinjiang. The sanctions by the Biden administration complement actions also taken by the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada. Beijing has previously rejected U.S. charges that it has committed genocide against the Uyghurs, a Muslim population indigenous to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. The foreign ministry called such claims “malicious lies” designed to “smear China” and “frustrate China’s development.” The sanctions came on the heels of a contentious meeting between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and national security advisor Jake Sullivan and China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, and State Councilor Wang Yi in Alaska. Ahead of the Alaska talks, Blinken slammed China’s sweeping use of “coercion and aggression” on the international stage and warned that the U.S. will push back if necessary. “China uses coercion and aggression to systematically erode autonomy in Hong Kong, undercut democracy in Taiwan, abuse human rights in Xinjiang and Tibet, and assert maritime claims in the South China Sea that violate international law,” Blinken said at a news conference in Japan.
  13. Looking like Biden might be moving towards backing a boycott.

  19. The International Olympic Committee is also caught in the controversy. Its official uniform supplier is Chinese company Anta Sports, which in the past week withdrew its membership of the Better Cotton Initiative in order to keep using Xinjiang cotton in its products.

  22. https://chinadigitaltimes.net/2021/03/prc-sanctions-critics-of-xinjiang-policy-fans-nationalist-boycott/ Boris Johsnin just a meeting with those individuals sanctioned - at least one has supported a total boycott in the past so I suspect they encouraging Boris to say something like this ‘I personally would like to see Team GB boycott but obviously it’s up to the BOA’.. It’s the type of statement that would put a tremendous amount of political and media pressure on the BOA without being direct interference.
  23. According to the Financial Times the Biden Administration believes China might invade Taiwan relatively soon. If it Happens before the Games then global boycotts are surely very likely.
  24. https://cultmtl.com/2021/03/canada-should-boycott-the-2022-olympics-in-beijing-china-angus-reid-poll-survey/ A new study has found that most Canadians want to boycott the Olympics in China. According to a new survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute, the majority of Canadians say that Canadian athletes, coaches and fans should boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The poll was framed in light of Canada’s relationship with China given the ongoing detention of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor (aka the two Michaels). The poll also addressed China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims and the perception that the Chinese government hasn’t offered an honest account of what happened during the COVID-19 outbreak. 56% of respondents believe that Canada should boycott the Olympics in Beijing, scheduled to run from Feb. 4–20, 2022. When looking at the results by party affiliation, it is clear that Conservative and Bloc voters are more likely to support a boycott of the Olympics in China than Liberal and NDP voters.
  25. Washington: Republican Sen. Rick Scott has asked sponsors of Olympics to demand that 2022 Winter Games be move from Beijing due to human rights abuses and alleged genocide against Uyghur Muslims and ethnic minorities in China, media reports said. Scott, of Florida, wrote a letter, exclusively obtained by Fox News, to International Olympics Committee sponsors, including Airbnb, Alibaba Group, Allianz, Atos, Bridgestone, Coca-Cola, DOW, General Electric, Intel, Omega, Panasonic, Procter & Gamble, Samsung, Toyota and Visa, reports Fox News. As a sponsor of the IOC, you are uniquely positioned to join in this fight and demand the IOC stand for human rights and remove the games from Communist China, or lose your sponsorship and support," Scott wrote to the companies Tuesday as quoted by the news channel. A coalition of 150 human rights campaigners also issued an open letter to sponsors asking them to drop their support for the 2022 games, reports Fox News. "I am sure you agree the crimes committed by General Secretary Xi are horrific. We cannot give a nation that is so overtly abusing human rights a platform to whitewash its crimes by hosting the Olympic Games," Scott wrote. "Therefore, I am asking you to stand for human rights and freedom, and use your considerable leverage as a sponsor of the 2022 Olympic Games to publicly urge the IOC to move the games to a nation that values human dignity and freedom." In an exclusive interview with Fox News Tuesday, Scott said he believed the sponsors would join in the calls to move the Olympic Games out of Beijing. He said he feels no body will like to be affiliated with a country's government that commits genocide of own men. "I don’t think anybody should want to be affiliated with a government that commits genocide against its own people," Scott told Fox News, calling the abuses toward Uyghurs "disgusting." "I am hopeful that the sponsors will see it is not in their best interest to be affiliated with a despicable government like this," he said. Scott said if the companies work with the Chinese Communist Party, "they are turning a blind eye to genocide."
