  1. There is now a fairly decent chance the PM of Canada by the times the games starts will be someone who has outright called for athletes to boycott the games. I can’t see Canada being at the games.

  4. https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/beijing-olympics-boycott-unlikely-canadian-political-parties-1.6139647 Not sure I agree with that.

  6. Let’s face if Canada boycotts America will as well. Biden is hardly likely to say he opposes Canada doing so and if he says he supports it but is powerless to enforce it that is a massive gift to Fox News.
  7. https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/defence-and-foreign-affairs/boycott-of-beijing-winter-olympics-splits-mps-on-both-sides-of-politics/news-story/8c37732021267c73b84b1bcd5b0f5433 The headline is misleading. The letter is only calling for a diplomatic boycott. So far it’s only Canada where a full boycott is being discussed by important figures this week.
  8. The Canadian Olympic committee sound rather resigned to a boycott.
  9. It feels like the bigger effect is no real likelihood of a Canadian bid for 2030 or 2034. That will effectively mean Salt Lake City is only plausible option for 2030.
  10. Have we heard from any Canadian athletes about if they fearful of boycotts or not. Other athletes have commented on it
  11. Canada or Australia will be the first to pull out. When that happens Biden will know he will have to force USOC or he will look weak.
  12. Biden is lucky Trump himself is against a boycott. If Trump was the pressure would be strong.
  13. Biden knows he might not be able to afford to be seen as not enforcing a boycott due to pressure from Congress. https://patch.com/new-jersey/middletown-nj/rep-chris-smith-wants-winter-2022-beijing-olympics-moved https://www.skynews.com.au/world-news/china/beijing-olympics-will-be-a-propaganda-event-for-the-chinese-communist-party/video/35b8e7e6cf294c56e29f1195402d5a13 https://patch.com/new-jersey/middletown-nj/rep-chris-smith-wants-winter-2022-beijing-olympics-moved

  15. https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1110767/us-commission-ioc-beijing-2022 https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/us-lawmakers-urge-ioc-delay-or-move-chinas-2022-winter-olympics-2021-07-23/ Cross party support for a full USA boycott. Hard to see Biden objecting to this - and if he backs USOC know they have to comply or they will not be able to financially afford to survive.
  16. Of course not but it’s the type of thing that could say the country is boycotting and the athletes are going for pure sporting purposes.
  17. Could we see countries repeating what they did in 1980 and competing under the Olympic flag and skipping the ceremonies?
  18. America is about to accuse China of global hacking. How they can say it’s safe for athletes to go there is going to be a sight to see.

  20. And I don’t think it will wash with the public. At least one country will announce they going to properly boycott soon,
  21. https://toysmatrix.com/coalition-opposing-genocide-games-calls-to-move-boycott-2022-olympics/
  22. The big risk is the damage to further games. We could easily see all further games becoming split into two blocs.
  23. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/09/eu-votes-diplomats-boycott-china-winter-olympics-human-rights-abuses https://www.thetablet.co.uk/blogs/1/1825/the-uyghur-tragedy-and-the-case-for-moving-the-winter-olympic-games-from-beijing The Parliament in the UK likely to vote for to ask the IOC to move the games. I think the BOA might end up boycotting due to not wanting to lose sponsors for Paris 2024.
