  1. thats been the majority of the projects we have and one of the reasons we are got the games. we have all this infrastructure going in anyway - Cross River Rail, Brisbane Metro, Coomera Connector, Brisbane Live, etc I said this to my wife the other day - the legacy of the games is not the 2 weeks of sport. It's the infrastructure upgrades
  2. may not look at hosting but there are plenty of teams that will be looking for pre-games training venues
  3. as both a Rugby & Baseball fan, this makes me beyond happy. I hope the reds play at ballymore again (if only preseason games)
  4. considering they are tearing the whole place down anyway i can't see the run up / pack down of the games being a concern. I can see them doing what they did in 06 when the MCG was out of action for the comm games - use alternate venues. Alan Border field for the shield cricket, Metricon for Big Bash & ODI and no BNE tests for the time its out of service
  5. the 2032 host city contract is on the Olympics website at https://stillmed.olympics.com/media/Documents/Olympic-Games/Brisbane-2032/Host-Contract/Host-City-Contract-2032-Principles.pdf there's a few interesting clauses in it, in particular clause 14" 14. No inconsistent activities The Hosts, the Host NOC and the OCOG hereby agree that: a. no major event, conference, or other meeting which could have an impact on the successful planning, organising, financing and staging of the Games or their public and media exposure, shall take place in the jurisdiction of the Host City or in the jurisdiction of other local government authorities within the Host State or the Host Country hosting other competition sites or their neighbourhoods, either during the Games or during the preceding or following week, without the prior written approval of the IOC; and b. no negotiations shall take place nor agreements be entered into, having any connection with the Games, between the OCOG and any international or supranational organisation (whether governmental or non-governmental) without the prior written approval of the IOC. in other words the IOC has a monopoly for the entire city for the games period
  6. it could be possible. Use UQ at st lucia (or new farm park) as a staging area.
  7. heres a docco on how they set up a temp pool in the mandalay bay hotel in vegas. i asume the process would be similar for the setup for Brisbane Live
  8. Governor grants Royal Assent Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young PSM, Governor of Queensland, today received Mr Michael Ries, Deputy Clerk of the Parliament, for the presentation of the following Bill to which Royal Assent was granted: Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games Arrangements Act 2021 - A bill for an Act to establish an organising committee for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and for related purposes, and to amend this Act and the Right to Information Act 2009 for particular purposes. The granting of Royal Assent is an integral step in the legislative process.
  9. Wasn’t sure where to post this, but The Daily Telegraph are reporting that Australian governments are secretly hatching plans for more sporting events in Australia, one of the more major ones being the Federal government speaking to states interested in preparing a bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Australia. Federal Sports Minister Richard Colbeck warns that if the Commonwealth Games don’t return to Australia in 2026, then we’ll have to wait until 2038. https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/australias-secret-plans-to-secure-sporting-mega-events-revealed/news-story/0ac94885de54f9ce36e002309ab155ba
  10. i'm thinking more of sponsorship. they will struggle to find corporate sponsors when the biggest marketing opportunity in the world will be right on our doorstep
  11. if only there was a great surfing spot nearby.. perhaps a paradise for surfers? nah that will never work
  12. i believe with brisbane winning the 2032 olympics it's killed any chance of an australian comm games prior this, and possibly to 2038 at a minimum - the money is not there to support a comm games and an olympics
  13. I have nothing at the moment. I don't go to Victoria park anymore since they closed the golf course and for the metro there's not much there. a closed road and some drilling. The big projects are the new casino and the cross river rail at the moment. I'm more keeping my eyes open for the rings to pop up (i suspect the first place could be the opening of the woolloongabba train station that i suspect will be called Woolloongabba / Olympic stadium - not that i have any inside knowledge on this)
  14. here is a link to the bill before the house - it's only 40 pages
  15. such a shame. might have been a good chance ot move it from the Bids sub forum to the Olympic Games sub forum given the games have been awarded
  16. because lets be honest, (and i say this as a Brisbane resident) Brisbane is hardly a tier 1 city. But what Brisbane will show is that tier 2 cities can host the games opening up the hosting to many more cities
  17. so true. Brisbane is looking pretty certain to host 2032 and there is no bid logo there.
  18. as they should. It gives them time to refine and work the bid. The thing that worked in Brisbane's favour - the advanced state of the bid could work for Rhine-Ruhr
  19. this bid will not get up. the geo-politics of this region will ensure that
  20. agreed on both. I live in Brisbane and work in the CBD. I would love to discuss the bid from a locals perspective, but when i do post, it just gets drowned out by the long form articles. The long form articles are great as a historical record but it really stifles conversation
  21. here is a youtube video from channel 10 news in 2008 talking about bidding for 2024. here is another from 2017. Another from 2019. Brisbane bidding for the games was no secret - it's been in the news and on the TV. if anyone was suprised by the bid, they were not paying attention given Bach has met with the Premier multiple times, including in brisbane
  22. did you look at the feasibility doc? the public approvals are all listed there. I'm also old enough to remember the bid process in the lead up to the awarding of Sydney 2000 in 1992/3. there was a lot of people who were extremely against the bid, given both Brisbane and Melbourne had bid for previous games and been rejected. to give you an idea of the popularity of the games come the opening ceremony, this is from a newspaper article talking about the ceremony's tv ratings The Friday night broadcast of the ceremony saw ratings peak at 72 in Sydney and 71 in Melbourne, while Seven’s share of the viewing audience hit 96.3 per cent in Sydney and Melbourne. In contrast, in Sydney the Nine Network had only 0.9 per cent of the audience and the Ten Network 1.4 per cent. In Melbourne, Nine had 2 per cent of the audience and Ten 2.4 per cent. Across Australia, Seven had 10.4 million viewers on Friday night, with the highest viewing figure recorded in Sydney (2.4 million) followed by Melbourne (2.1 million).
  23. yep. I'm starting to think that brisbane 2032 could be the most important games in a century. Brisbane is really the first smaller city to host the games in the new norm era, after LA & Paris. It’s also no secret that the games are struggling to find host cities, for a myriad of reasons including economic viability and public support. Should Brisbane 2032 be successful it will show the IOC and smaller cities that the games can be in regional cities, therefore opening up a lot more hosting opportunities and cities that considered themselves too small may now see that they could host a successful games, whereas if it fails, it will block these cities from hosting and really restrict the cities that can host.
  24. no. they lowered the bar to allow anyone to host. its called the new norm...
