Yeah, can understand the frustration about the ticket assignment. That intransparency was a major flaw in the whole ticket sales programme. Still, as usual with a street (river) parade, you see someone marching (floating) by at where you‘re positioned and don‘t get to see what‘s going on elsewhere unless there‘s screens. Hope you will enjoy the rest of your stay more.
I must add that Paris as a host city has been EXCELLENT! 10/10.
Everyone seems to know their role from the Metro workers, to security, to volunteers. On this end they deserve all the praise.
Merci to the people of Paris!

I'm not a fan of live presentations that cater way too much to TV viewers or favor canned filmed segments. This segment shows costumed participants in Paris's main library interspersed with mannequins on poles. Huh? Where's the kitchen sink?
https://youtu.be/TgzDfVfn6w8?si=_HpvPUJGzpp1c9Qz&t=291
In 2012, the segment with the actor who played James Bond filmed at Buckingham Palace, and that showed a woman (supposedly the Queen) jumping out of a helicopter, was another wacky moment that made those ceremonies seem less "Olympics" and more like a wild, crazy TV sitcom.
Which is totally fine. But for the prices it is completely unacceptable.
The organizers promised us a show and in the end we were better off watching it at a bar or viewing party indoors.
Again, I'm just glad I was a part of a historic day, but unfortunately the opening was a dud for me.
Now I'm definitely worried for LA.
If Paris with it's plethora of history and culture couldn't make it work, what on Earth is LA going to do!?

My thoughts throughout this was how pissed those who paid a ticket to see it must be. Where were you seated based on the location of the artistic segments?
And the kicker was the RELENTLESS rain. It seemed to only get worse as the opening went on.
Truthfully, I wouldn't have cared if we were given a proper show, but we didn't even get that.
I'll get over it soon enough. But man, I hope the French liked it because a lot of us visiting were visibly unsatisfied.

Serious question: what did you expect from watching a boat parade?
Well the thing is that we weren't even assigned seats until very recently. So it was difficult to know if your seat was even worth the money you paid for it. By far and large the answer was "no"
It was great on paper terrible execution.
Glad I could be part of a historic day in Paris and one that they worked so hard for, but overall the opening for me was a total let down.
I'll be at the closing and hand off. Hopefully having it at Stade de France helps.

A few things. I paid slightly more because I just KNEW some of the outer sections would only see the boats.
So I paid to be in Category "A" right where all the main acts are supposed to be.
However, you don't get to select your seat! So many of us were tucked in little corners or sections where we couldn't even get a good view of the pathetic little screen.
The rain was almost an after thought.
The drag queens and last supper bit. My god. I'm not even religious but kept asking "Why!?" Was that necessary? On the biggest platform.
Most of the Eiffel Tower was blocked so that really cool laser show wasn't visible by the vast majority of ticket holders.
I knew it would be difficult but boy am I completely let down. Keep it in stadiums in a singular location.
LA has a lot to learn from this. So many things to avoid.
What a shame.

From a spectator perspective I am angry and want a refund.
Just plain awful. Once the boats passed we all were glued to a tv screen in the pouring rain.
Did we all just fly to Paris for the opening ceremony to WATCH IT ON A TV SCREEN!?
L.A. please don't **** it up. PLEASE.

Precisely. Been there; done that. I mean, Dame Edna's passed on, right? And that was at Closing -- on the way out. Besides, there are the GAY GAMES. That's where RuPaul and company would be more relevant. And surely the Gay Games wouldn't want Heteros pushing their agenda at "their" Games, would they?
There is a time and place for everything.
If anyone caught the Kendrick Lamar concert in LA a few days ago for Juneteenth. My god. It was electric.
They cannot hold a proper opening/closing in LA without a serious dose of Hip Hop/Rap being a major component.-

AC is criticized for its energy consumption. Given that it's not that popular in France (yet), a lot of people want to avoid it as much as possible if it's possible to have an eco-friendly way to replace it. Paris mayor, for example.
I don't think during the Summer Olympics is the best time to do it.
So many people can get seriously ill. -

Ceremonies tickets have not been made available on the tickets app yet (seat details are blank). Once it's done (it was planned for mid-June, so it should be soon), it will be possible de resell them.
Thanks!

I have a ticket to the opening ceremony that I am on the fence about selling, however, I don't see the "Sell" option beneath it in the official app. Does anyone else have this problem?
Perhaps the OC tickets cannot be resold? -

Not if people want the 2028 ceremonies to have a "Hollywood" theme.
Again, although London isn't Hollywood, much of the movie/music industry is as associated with London as it it with Los Angeles. Actually, London over the past 40 years has been the home of some of the most popular film franchises and top singers/songwriters than LA/Hollywood has been.
Regardless, I want the 2028 games to go with an international theme.
Although the IOC's guidelines say that host cities should have segments about themselves and the country they're a part of, I say LA 2028 should ditch that concept and perform the role of All Cities, All Countries.
IDK about that, definitely feels like a stretch. LA certainly has its own heavy hitters, especially in the last 20 years. Not to mention the rest of the country's contribution to film/music. Not downplaying London or the UK for a second, but it is not like L.A. will somehow come up short against London, ESPECIALLY, in that category.
Of course it also depends on preference. Rock over Rap/Hip Hop? Pop? Because if we went down some of these routes LA easily beats London, many times over. -

The LA Coliseum is in generally one of the most shabby urban areas of any Olympic games held over the past 90-plus years. Exposition Park will be supposedly improved over the next few years, but the neighborhood overall is not Grade A.
But for the specific role of "Ceremonies," the Coliseum to me fits better for the purpose of "ceremony" than some hermetically enclosed, multi-billion-dollar stadium does. Whether a fancy So-Fi or the sleek Calavantra stadium in 2004, etc, the funky charm of a nearly 100-year-old stadium is my first preference.
I agree.

I don't know what the buzz is about SoFi Stadium after the Super Bowl.
Since the building is going to be used in the context of Olympic ceremonies in 2028, that's what takes the center of any conversation, at least what this thread is supposed to be for.
Archery in 2028, by contrast, has been proposed as being held outside of the stadium, possibly on a platform installed above the lake area. But who knows what actually eventually occurs?
When it comes to a variety of non-Olympics subjects, I've read postings in various forums where a lot of users slam something that I don't think is as bad as they make out to be. In turn, I've seen people give high marks to something I think is junk. I SMH, but so be it.
Again, everyone has an opinion. There's the saying: Opinions are like b---holes. Everyone has them and they all stink.
If people think my opinions stink to high heaven, fine. I don't mind that. But comments that don't go much beyond "you suck, stop it or you're banned!!!" are really uninteresting. They seem kind of lame for any message board where people who share an interest in a subject like to post.
Beyond this forum, I think the ceremonies of most Olympic games are like today's music. Most people don't say either yah or nay about them, but instead give a few seconds of their time and move on. They don't care. Or "ceremony on TV" doesn't interest them enough to have an opinion. Apparently a lot of newer music is developing that same kind of dynamic.
As for me, as much as I go on about this subject, I never watch most Olympic ceremonies or I view only a small portion of them. I think a lot of people are the same way. Or they don't care one way or the other.
Or they go, "feh" or "I have to post my selfie right now...not enough time to be bothered!"
My citing the 2012 games is because they were hosted by a big-time city. So they interested me more than other games have done.
However, I don't think the 2016 games were either better or worse than 2012 because the amount of money the 2016 OOC had to work with was less than what 2012 had.
Similarly, I don't think the 2012 games were either better or worse than 2008 because the amount of money the 2012 OOC had to work with was less than what the 2008 OOC had.
It will be interesting to see what they do with SoFi for the opening. The whole canopy/closed roof debacle is worth noting but not necessarily an end all. It actually creates an opportunity to try something new, especially with a giant oculus in the middle. The filed is so low that you could technically hold a drone show inside the stadium....but who knows if they will even be as popular in 2028 as they are now. It definitely gives me fad vibes and not sure they will still have the wow factor.

For starters, the short track meant that you could see every corner from just about any seat in the stadium, something larger tracks cannot achieve. You miss a good part of the action when the track is so big. It also looked amazing against the backdrop of the peristyle with the cauldron lit. The flyover, fireworks, mini concert by Pitbull then Ice Cube.... The whole entire thing was just reeking of success. I don't see NASCAR returning to Daytona for their exhibition race. There's no way they walked away from this thinking it was a failure.
There's also of course the wild statistic that about 70% of those in attendance were first timers most of whom gave the event very positive reviews.-

I read that the US market where NASCAR has their largest numbers of fans is in the LA area.
I don't know how the event went, money- and technically-wise. But some jokes a few posts above about the race being like watching the 110 freeway makes me wonder if NASCAR will want to do a repeat.
Regardless, I still think something about a basic outdoor stadium - even the funky Coliseum - makes for a better backdrop for an Olympic games than the hermetically sealed design of places like SoFi.
Agreed. I think the SoFi Stadium is a feat of engineering and a marvel to look at, but TV wise, nothing will beat a spectacular LA sunset washing the audience in a golden orange as the open ceremonies take place.
As for the NASCAR event, I was in attendance and it was AWESOME. Die hard NASCAR fans will without a doubt have their opinions about it, but for a sport that needed an injection of excitement and grow their market, they hit the bulls eye with their event at the LA Coliseum. -

Not in covid tho, the times now for some awkward reason requires OCOC to display a pre-recorded "imagine" version with a corny visual display. Imagine only sounded good in 2012, after then it has become the cheesy segment of the ceremony. IDK why everyone I know loves that song in the olympics like yeah imagine all the people with lights, then oh with drones, now with mapping but in the end is the same song over and over again
psd: I know this comment is out of theme but tightly related, and we will probably hear imagine again in 2028 but in a different version before the olympic matchstick is lit
I highly doubt that. There are plenty of American singers/songs that easily fit that bill, some already mentioned in this thread.
And between now and 28, maybe even new hits that haven't even been written yet.
I just hope it re-ignites excitement, because the last few have been very mediocre IMO.
Just look at what NASCAR did last week in LA. A temporary track in LA. Everyone said they were crazy and that it would fail. Not only did it not fail, it was a tremendous success for NASCAR.
Dare to be bold and different. Luck favors it. -
I always knew 2008 Beijing was going to be hard to top, but, I really did not enjoy 2022 Opening Ceremonies. I understand Covid played a huge role in the scaling down, but it just was boring IMO *cue Putin sleeping*
I hope that in the future they rely less on giant LED screens. They are so common now that they almost feel like giant ads plastered on the stadium floors and walls.
That Shenzhen drone and light show was way better than several ceremonies in recent history.
Hope Paris 24, Milan 26, and LA 28 try something new and more exciting because Beijing 22 was very underwhelming and uninspiring.

I really like the idea of this, but, it looks like a real logistical nightmare, and not just for the athletes.
Also, with more moving parts, more of a likelihood of something not going to plan.
Very bold vision. I hope they are able to pull it off successfully.
I also doubt LA will follow suit. Not if they want to stay on budget. -

Gamesbid.com's forums are way too busy. Threads upon threads, threads embedded within threads. Sheesh.
Since this thread had been dead since 2019, I'll post in here. Yea, this area is now even more a message in the bottle. So the 2028 OOC is less likely to find this, less likely to find this eventually washing onto their shoreline. But what the hell.
If the producer of the 2028 ceremonies comes up with the brilliant idea (jk) of getting this singer to perform her totally inappropriate number as part of an Olympics opening/closing, even she could be made to somewhat fit just as long she did her piece standing in front of, say, a 1,000-voice choir.
:
It's not the money, 2028 OOC. It's the format. Okay?
I think its still way too early to know for sure who is a shoe in. Billie has a massive GenZ following, so its not a bad marketing move to have her as part of the LA28 team. Of course also helps that she's also a LA native.
BUT, I don't like the idea of having her as an Olympic performer. She's just not the kind of caliber for that kind of thing IMO. But who knows. In 6 years a lot can change. Hopefully no more pandemics to derail future games.

1984 was a massive success because they didn't have to build all that much, so they weren't spending a lot of money. This is the pitfall of tying infrastructure projects to an Olympics because now they're rushing to deliver and that rush is going to cost money. If the private sector is willing to pay for it, then they're fine. If not, that's a problem. And the response shouldn't be "well, if they don't do all these things they said they would do before 2028, it probably won't matter anyway."
You do know that Metro's projects were approved by taxpayers a whole year before the Olympic bid was even won and was in the works before LA was even the US Bid right?
You do know that it's also completely independent of the bid?
While it will be ideal for those projects to be finished, in the event that they are not, LA can execute a plan B similar to what they did in 1984.
