/\/\ Well, with all the visa fees and other STUPIDITY moves the Swamp administration is putting on, I think LA28 will really have to sell tickets locally to fill the stadia.  I think they realize that foreign fans probably won't be coming in droves, so they better just sell domestically to make up for I think would 30%-33% (for foreign ticket sales) of the original pre-2024 ticket sale projections.  I'm guessing at this point -- and unless the Swamp admin removes those ABSURD visa fees, LA28 can probably only sell 17% of tickets to the average foreign fan who might normally afford 3-4 events in the 4 or 5 days they can be here.

For those whom i think might have been the cheapest to come because of proximity (the Canadians and Mexicans), they certainly won't be coming in the original projections from 3-4 years ago.

Yeah, they should at least suspend it for the World Cup or the Olympics in LA.

It's so frustrating to see LA28's potential taking a major tumble like this. The orange man and his cronies need to step back.

Now we know how 14 July 2028 will look like -- whether it's him or Vance.

Donald Trump met with boos and cheers at the US Open men’s final after broadcasters asked not to show reactions

I think they will put him in one of the corporate suites just to "insulate" him and the audience from each other.

Trump was also loudly booed at Yankee Stadium just a couple days ago.

It would be in their best interest to not show up and defer the opening of the games to the CA governor or LA mayor. Whoever that is at that time.

And yes, maybe the Pope should open the games. THAT would be historic.

  3. Sounds kinda stupid, but so much of this would have been avoided if LA was awarded the 2024 Games vs the 2028 Games.

Biden would have opened, they would have very likely been a massive success paving the way for a 2nd Biden presidency or that of a Democrat.

But LA got 2028 with Trump and the worst of America at the controls.

It does feel like a major shift is in the air. Both parties seem to be at least agreeing on things despite what the government is forcing down on us.

The murder was gruesome and it struck a serious chord with both sides.

They want to divide Americans further, but I think people are starting to see it. They are getting sloppy.

2026 Midterms can't get here soon enough. Impeachment and removal is in order.

Due to his passing on April 11, LA28 will not be a 3-peat for producer Don Mischer who produced both the ceremonies for the last 2 "American" Olympics; Atlanta 1996 and Salt Lake 2002.

Because of this. the choice of Ceremonies production company for LA28 is a wide-open contest.  (I have a few guesses as to who will do it but I will keep my cards close to my vest for now.)  RIP, Don Mischer.

Don Mischer, Master of Live Television, Is Dead at 85 - The New York Times

I wasn't a huge fan of Atlanta's opening with the exception of Mohammad Ali lighting the cauldron.

So, will the Pope be the one to open the 2028 Olympics? Since the rule is that the Games are opened by the most powerful person in the host country...

I was thinking the exact same thing. Pope Leo the XIV would be an Olympic first and a MAJOR one at that. I don't want to jinx anything but LA is shaping up to be an Olympics that will set the bar very high for all subsequent games.

That's right; I seem to remember having seen that -- and I think it was either Boxing or Wrestling that they were going to put in there?  But I think (1) Boxing almost pulled out; and (2) maybe Disney Hall also changed its mind.  A concert hall for a sports event?  CRICKET?  🤪

It reminds me of Santa Monica who dropped the ball by not agreeing to host beach volleyball. Santa Monica is WHERE IT WAS BORN!!! What a colossal missed opportunity.

I don't think this is a major concern and it's tough to tell if this isn't politically charged or not, but sharing here because why else would we be doing this

It's strange how for LA28 this is more like a minor inconvenience. They have so many venues to choose from still.

What ever happened to hosting at the Disney Hall!?

    That would have been amazing.

While luckily, no projected venues for use in LA28 have been burned or damaged by the fires, will the larger misfortune curtail Wasserman's ridiculous 35-sport programme?  I hope so.

And, of course, all SoCal also has to be ready for any major earthquakes.  That might cause some of the older venues to be put at risk.  (I hope UCLA too comes through the fires unscathed.)  And who was the idiot here who was saying that Oh, you can't factor in natural events like earthquakes and fires in selecting your Olympic host cities.  It is . . . inhuman, unfair -- and some other sort of phoney garbage like that!  HELLO, Mr. Phoney-Heart!!  Look what's happened to the next Summer Olympic host city!!  🤪

I hope all of LA County and surrounding can get their water -- and fire hydrant system upgraded in time for 2028 . . .  altho that might be a bit of a stretch.

The fires did not damage or destroy a single Olympic venue.

LA also has an abundance of venues to shift to if necessary.

No amount of water and high powered hydrants were going to stop fires fanned by 100mph winds.

LA is not the only Olympic host city in a seismically active area. Tokyo, Mexico City, hell even Athens.

Can it happen? Of course. It's guaranteed we just never know when.

Of course, the silence is defeaning but I think LA28 is in great financial trouble.

#1 - On the TOP level, Toyota and Panasonic have dropped out from that IOC category.  Unless LA28 finds equally generous sponsors, they will have to buy those giant jumbotrons and buy/rent a few hundred vehicles for use during the Games.

#2 - Four years out, they only have Comcast-Xfinity, Delta and Salesforce as the only signed sponsors.  In 1980, when LA84 went into business, they had a dozen top-tier sponsors lined up.  Last week LA28's only new "sponsor" line-up was Cedars-Sinai who will be the Medical Provider for 2028.  No cash from that deal.

I think the "no advertising in Olympic FOP settings will be a dead duck.  If I were amazon or apple -- why should I pay $75 million to be associated with an event wherein I cannot plaster my brand across the FOP?  I can get the same AND MORE by sponsoring on the World Cup or the Paralympics--and do right by my stockholders.

And then, sponsoring 34 sports for '28?  Wasserman is biting off more than he can chew.  They will be tightening their budget and be doing major cuts in the coming years.  Of course, LA28 will not expose its vulnerability at this stage or at any time.

Seems a little premature to sound the alarm on this TBH.

I'm certain the LA organizers will secure enough sponsors, even if they're not traditional Olympic sponsors.

The Handover was kinda what I expected.  Totally unimaginative -- except for an aging movie star trying to prove he's still young and macho.  (I wonder who covered the insurance for him since he proposed this thing to LA28??)

I wonder how much that crappy little thing cost?  My guess is probably no more than $3 million.  And who were the 2 or 3 other "LA athletes" used?  Never mind - probably wouldn't matter one way or another.

It wasn't terrible. The Tom Cruise bit actually got the stadium going crazy. The shot of the Hollywood sign with the Olympics rings also got the stadium going.

Beyond that we were forced to watch a pre recorded video on two small screens at Stade de France. The folks in the beach back in LA got a much better experience than those of us in France.

For all the hopes I had for Paris. The opening and closing were a let down.

LA already feels more exciting even if the handoff had sound issues. It looked more cinematic than Paris....and LA doesn't have the Eiffel Tower or Grand Palais

That was the worst handover ever. I’m tired of these made for tv segments. There should’ve been more representation and entertainment in the stadium. Poor decisions made by the organizers. This shows how bad of an idea the 2-stadium ceremony is! They’ve lost the plot!

This entire Olympics focused too much on TV and little on in person experience. Opening, closing, and handover.

A 15-minute show with artists doing a concert... hmmm... that reminds me of something... Come on, I'm going to be deliberately mean: do Americans know that they can try to do something other than SuperBowl concerts? Well, we'll see how it goes in the end. But I'm afraid that in the end the handover segment will look like a SuperBowl concert dressed in Olympic colors.

Honestly yes. And still more exciting than what Paris strung together.

  13. While it was a major improvement over the opening ceremony by having it at Stade de France, it was STILLL very underwhelming for being Paris and France. Which is a real pity because I actually had a great seat!

The crowd got really excited with the handover to LA and Tom Cruise jumping into the stadium. The Hollywood Olympic rings also got the stadium buzzing.

The sound for the performance was terrible and Stade de France's small screens made it hard to get excited about the performances by RHCP, Snoop, and Billie Eilish.

The closing gave the impression that they were out of time and out of money.

Unfortunately, my favorite thing about it is knowing that its over and that the games are now off to Los Angeles where the world expects at the very least a spectacular opening and closing ceremony.

Paris was an excellent host over all. Staging in front of world renowned landmarks will be talked about for generations to come, but in terms of ceremonies, it was very lackluster.

LA, PLEASE DON'T MESS THIS UP. Leverage all that cinematic talents and truly elevate the games once again!

THey indeed light it for a minute or 5 at some events.  But it doesn't last the whole night.  It costs $$ and in a state where wildfires are burning very destructively, do you want that as a reminder of what not to have?

Both SoFi and Coliseum are nowhere near hills or brush that may start a wildfire. Yes California has them, but suggesting that they could start smack in the middle of an urban area is kind of silly, no?

I think there will be a small, fake one at SoFi -- and with "clean fuels."  And then the existing one at Memorial -- will just be lit during the Ceremonies -- but for environmental concerns, it will not be lit otherwise.  And they will publicize their legitimate reasons and just the public accept that.

That would be a tough sell since they already regularly light it for USC Games and other notable events.

If there's a 2nd one at SoFi I just hope it's not boring.

Or maybe it will be something completely new and original and instantly iconic.

    Who knows!?

The weather was beyond the organizer's control, though. Can't fault them for that.

Not New York, Toronto or Singapore. The very tall skyscrapers alone in those cities, would block all the views for everyone, on the ground & on TV.

Just no more city ceremonies unless it's free to spectators. Cause boy did Paris' fall flat.

Thankfully it will be remembered for Celine Dion on the Tower. But the rest did not work.

The entire thing should have been in one location.

I'm willing to bet the closing will be much better and more exciting. Hopefully.

Yeah, can understand the frustration about the ticket assignment. That intransparency was a major flaw in the whole ticket sales programme. Still, as usual with a street (river) parade, you see someone marching (floating) by at where you‘re positioned and don‘t get to see what‘s going on elsewhere unless there‘s screens. Hope you will enjoy the rest of your stay more.

I must add that Paris as a host city has been EXCELLENT! 10/10.

Everyone seems to know their role from the Metro workers, to security, to volunteers. On this end they deserve all the praise.

Merci to the people of Paris!

I'm not a fan of live presentations that cater way too much to TV viewers or favor canned filmed segments. This segment shows costumed participants in Paris's main library interspersed with mannequins on poles. Huh? Where's the kitchen sink?

    https://youtu.be/TgzDfVfn6w8?si=_HpvPUJGzpp1c9Qz&t=291

In 2012, the segment with the actor who played James Bond filmed at Buckingham Palace, and that showed a woman (supposedly the Queen) jumping out of a helicopter, was another wacky moment that made those ceremonies seem less "Olympics" and more like a wild, crazy TV sitcom.

Which is totally fine. But for the prices it is completely unacceptable.

The organizers promised us a show and in the end we were better off watching it at a bar or viewing party indoors.

Again, I'm just glad I was a part of a historic day, but unfortunately the opening was a dud for me.

Now I'm definitely worried for LA.

If Paris with it's plethora of history and culture couldn't make it work, what on Earth is LA going to do!?

My thoughts throughout this was how pissed those who paid a ticket to see it must be. Where were you seated based on the location of the artistic segments?

And the kicker was the RELENTLESS rain. It seemed to only get worse as the opening went on.

Truthfully, I wouldn't have cared if we were given a proper show, but we didn't even get that.

I'll get over it soon enough. But man, I hope the French liked it because a lot of us visiting were visibly unsatisfied.

  20. 3 minutes ago, StefanMUC said:

Serious question: what did you expect from watching a boat parade?

Well the thing is that we weren't even assigned seats until very recently. So it was difficult to know if your seat was even worth the money you paid for it. By far and large the answer was "no"

It was great on paper terrible execution.

Glad I could be part of a historic day in Paris and one that they worked so hard for, but overall the opening for me was a total let down.

I'll be at the closing and hand off. Hopefully having it at Stade de France helps.
