  1. Didn't realize this topic existed and on behalf of the half of Americans who aren't f**king insane, we apologize to the rest of the world. I don't want to go down the rabbit hole on Trump, but I will say this. As much as Trump has expressed his contempt for the entire state of California, at least we know come 2028 that he'll want the Games of Los Angeles (or is he'll call them, "the greatest Olympics ever because of Trump) to be a smashing success so he can invite all his buddies to sit beside him. So at least he'll advocate for the city and the state then. And probably 5 minutes afterwards tell us what a hell hole LA was and how he'll never get over having to spend 2 weeks there

  2. And, by the way, as a trained newspaper and online journalist, I also miss the buzz of a newsroom, at least occasionally.

  3. Thanks. I haven’t worked out yet if it’s going to show in cinemas here, or go satraight to streaming, but either way it’s on my must watch list. Looking forward to it not just for its recreation of Munich, but also it capturing the adrenaline of a newsroom. One of the things I miss about work is the buzz from being in a newsroom during a big event.

  4. I watched "September 5" in a local cinema yesterday, and I can really recommend it. In my opinion, they did a great and sensitive job recreating that terrible day in Munich in 1972, through the eyes of the ABC crew witnessing the events at close range. Director Tim Fehlbaum and his crew created a very convincing 1972 atmosphere through an authentic set, even a 1970s-like image quality (at times) and, most of all, great actors, including Peter Sarsgaard playing the ABC Sports president Roone Arledge. And we get to see quite a lot of the unforgettable, haunting original footage of Jim McKay reporting while the tragic events unfolded. If you get the chance, watch it.

  6. A lot of what I've seen on social media is "what can we do now?" where we all feel so powerless. And as much as I know people around the world feel bad for the Americans who oppose Trump and everything he stands for but we're simply outnumbered by everyone else who is buying into his BS, like you said I feel bad for the planet. Because it's one thing for the generational effect it might have on the United States. It's another to think about the consequences it might have for the rest of the planet and I really hope we don't look back 30 or 40 years from now and realized we cause irreparable harm because it sounded cool to elect a celebrity whose main selling point was that he hates the American political system and thinks he can rule by proclamation, laws and the constitution be damned. So then the Olympics seems really small potatoes by comparison. I doubt it will turn into a MAGA celebration considering how many of them flat out rejected anything and everything connected to Paris 2024 when their echo chamber told them about the opening ceremony. Would be fun to see the organizers lean into "woke" just to piss them off, but who knows what the story will be by then. There's also the matter of the fires, so we'll see what the long term fallout is from all that. Hopefully it won't make too deep of a dent into the funding that we know the private sector needs to provide them in order to be successful.

  7. To be clear, because the title of this thread is deliberately blunt, I don't expect apologies from Americans who are anti-Trump and who bothered to vote, I feel sorry for you guys. But at the same time I'm loathe to waste too much energy caring about what America has fuckwittingly inflicted upon itself. I'm far more worried about the effect on things like climate change, Ukraine etc. As for the Olympics, I would be far happier if Trump kept shitting on you rather than using it to promote himself, even if that means I politically fraught build up. Looking at it from the other perspective, if LA28 looks like it's leaning into MAGA then I'll avoid things like the ceremonies for sure.

  8. @AustralianFan @Victorian You both can be correct it will all depend on the 100-day outcome. At present there is not enough money for Perry Park, the varying spots for a swimming legacy and a lot of other projects getting some media attention. However, presently there is also not enough money for a new stadium under the two-government agreement. $2.5 billion (maximum commonwealth Brisbane Arena) + $1.87 billion (shared 35 minor venues) = $4.37 billion. This is not changing without a new agreement. I think it should, but that's just my opinion. Budget is $7.1 billion, that leaves $2.73 billion. From every costing we have seen that is not enough to get a new stadium. Money will be needed for The Gabba just to keep it safe until 2032. Unless they decide to pull it down The LNP will not put forward something that initially adds up to more than the budget of $7.1 billion Labor decided - $500 million -Suncorp improvements and slight capacity increase to add hosting the opening and closing ceremonies $500 million - The Gabba maintenance to get it past the Olympics. No relocation of Lions/cricket. T20 cricket Olympics $1,600 million - Basically the balance to use somewhere. They decided QSAC the only option for that money. Total $2.6 billion or there abouts. If you dump the Suncorp funding, you still only have $2.1 billion for a new stadium. .............................. LNP: terms of reference - Open to looking at a public, private partnership If that happens you can get a new stadium and maybe that allows another improvement somewhere not too expensive like Perry Park or something along that sort of money but not a big project like a pool complex. The best outcome would be 2 PPPs for The Stadium and Brisbane Arena/Live. Next best option a PPP for a new Stadium being the most likely one.

  9. World Boxing just added 8 new federations, bringing them up to 68 nations. With March 2025 as the sport's deadline on whether it will have a place in 2028 or not, I think 68 nations, including USA and major countries, would make a case for World Boxing and render Kremlev and the IBA moot. LA could give them the Kia Forum in Inglewood (18,500 capacity in a Boxing config) or the old Shrine Auditorium (6,300 capacity). World Boxing adds eight federations

  10. I've actually had a Bluesky account since like 2023 when you needed an invite code, it's just that twitter was still the most convenient place to get real-time updates (especially useful during the wildfires), but now that almost everyone is on Bluesky there is zero justification to keep that crusty dusty musty app. On a similar note, I want to get rid of Instagram as well due to the recent events, but all of my friends are on it (they're all people who I still very much keep in contact with, so it's not like I'm following people I barely talk to)... maybe one day I'll pull the trigger on that app too

  11. Finally someone who deserves it. Should have been parachuted straight into the boss chair though, in an ideal world.
