  1. Well, I was always told that the difference between a sport and a game is the Beer Test. If you can do the activity and drink a beer at the same time, it's a game. If you can't do both simultaneously, it's a sport. Works for me!

  2. Is spitting at the opponent also a part of cricket? I do recall an incident in which an Australian Cricketer spat at a West Indian cricketer. You certainly cannot support that atrocious behaviour as a "test of the mental toughness" of the opponent. Such displays simply must be crushed, utterly, from all sport.

  3. The aesthetics of this city are unparalleled. The IOC committee were not doubt convinced that Rio would be the host of the 2016 Games. I think Toronto Canada is such a spectacular place to visit since I've been there a number of times and simply fell in love with it. As Canada's most glittering expression of urban power, it is for me, the most sensational city in North America. However, Rio is the most sensational city in all the Americas! Oh...you simply CANNOT believe it.

  4. Yeah, I don't get the sense that the grade school system is super strong in America.

  6. AND America saved you and the rest of Europe's ass in the last World War. Maybe even the first one I don't know on that one since I vaguely remember anything about the first one. So yes, we may not own you now, but if it weren't for us, someone else would own you. You're welcome.

  9. That's big! Thank you for the kind words! Hope you can come back next year! Rio have lots to improve, the city have problems and bla, bla, bla, but from a broadcasting point of view, this can be one of the most spectacular Olympics ever, with all those HD aerial footage... World Cup studios in Copacabana was just an appetizer of what TV will bring during Rio Olympics.

  11. You honestly think that would have made the difference between early exit and winning the final ballot? I think not.

  12. White elephants or not, the building costs were over the top and were the main reason why so many cities ran away from the 2022 bidding process. I think the greatest legacy of Sochi 2014 was that it finally made many of us wake up at the excesses most of the recent olympics have been doing and that its time already to reduce them.

  14. I love it when people pull out this response to extravagance. Here is a shocking update - the money was never going to go to cancer research,or ebola vaccinations. If not for this painting, the $300 million would have been spent on another private yacht or some other rubbish.

  15. Yes LOVE Toronto! Went there twice, the first time I did the touristy things (CN Tower, AGO, ROM, Casa Loma, the Toronto Zoo) and my 2nd time around I did a lot of walking around downtown area and queen street. Truly an urban delight. And it's SO safe. Especially like the gayborhood and the small park with the dog park there. Oh and the dogs, they are SO well behaved it was almost unreal.

  16. When those oppressive regimes come from major powers like Russia or China, yes. But even economically rising Turkey couldn't get over the Erdogan barrier, so the crisis-struck Hungary as such doesn't look like an attractive option, and a guy like Orban is the cherry on the top. Besides, all of Hungary roughly equals the population of Paris Metro, or overall Greece. And we know how sustainable the Olympics were there in 2004.

  19. Why would a Winter Olympic athlete light the torch for a Summer Olympic Games??? NOT happening. It would be pretty crazy to see Bruce Jenner light the torch. But Michael Phelps, the most winning athlete in the Olympics would probably be a great choice as well. Oh or they could do a group effort like they did in SLC2002. We could have the Fierce Five from the 2012 London Olympics, or even better the Magnificent Seven from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

  20. WHY? WHY? WHY? At the 1984 Olympics, the torch was lit by Rafer Johnson, native of Texas. At the 1996 Olympics, the torch was lit by Muhammad Ali, native of Kentucky. It doesn't have to be someone from Boston who lights the flame. Certainly there would be some locals prominently in the relay and/or carrying the torch in the stadium. But if this is truly America's Olympics and not just Boston's, the torch-lighter will be someone more meaningful to the entire country, not just someone who was big in Boston.

  21. That's asinine. They shouldn't have announced plans for their main stadium? Yea, that would have gone over real well.. IOC: "So tell us about your stadium" NYC2012: "Uhh.. we can't yet, we'll tell you about it later. But yea, don't worry, we got it covered! Trust us " No lesson ever gets learned unless you take into account the circumstances of what it is you're trying not to repeat. It can't be "this happened before, don't let it happen again." That's a false argument too many people make here. So if we're going to use NYC 2012 as a cautionary tale.. It goes without saying that th

  22. Ugh.. you really need to work on your headlines here. When the story is that mayor is interested in a bid (and that the NOC may or may not support a bid with the needle probably pointing towards 'not'), the headline shouldn't be "Sapporo to bid for 2026." That is really misleading. You need to get out of the habit of misrepresenting the story like that. I mean, it would be like saying I'm thinking about asking a supermodel out on a date and you guys put up the headline "Quaker2001 to date supermodel"
