The entire Olympic Village would end up in a Jakarta jail by the end of the games if this went ahead: https://www.sbs.com.au/news/anger-as-indonesia-moves-to-criminalise-sex-outside-marriage

Chinese websites have been talking these days about the Olympic mascots going to be unveiled very soon. https://www.ppsport.com/article/news/682544.html However, according to Xinhua, it appears they are actually going to be unveiled tomorrow Tuesday, after a year of competition. http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-09/16/c_138396332.htm IMO Soohorang left big shoes to fill, even for Miraitowa (even though the later is slowly getting more popular in Japan). Let's see what China comes up with.

Where are the NO BRISBANE OLYMPICS'ers?? Time to come out now!! And this would all but kill a Jakarta-Shanghai-Korea bid for the same year, and a Durban bid for at least until 2040.

Brisbane doesn't need a 60,000 seat stadium either. What sports franchise even needs a stadium in Brisbane? To my knowledge, the Gabba is supposed to get a 100$ million upgrade. The whole reducing a stadium to 15,000-20,000 from 60,000 has yet to be shown to be a viable option. It's a white elephant either way unless there's a permanent tenant.

This whole approach seems crazy to me. Brisbane and Queensland should be thinking about what works for them and then seeing how that could work for an Olympic bid rather than making the "best bid ever" and then trying to figure out the legacy afterwards. But maybe I don't understand the Australian point of view.

this was the right bid and the right pick, Italy saved the IOC's butt. Reminds me a lot of Nashville's MLS expansion bid. Last one in, but they were in it to win it and rode it out while others dropped out.

To me it doesn't seem terribly wise for a city as small as Brisbane to bid (the entire state of Queensland has only 36.4% of the population of the London metropolitan area), but if Brisbane can host without building any white elephant facilities then it could work. And as the spearhead of a new model for the IOC a Brisbane games could potentially put the Olympics within reach of cities like Liverpool, Copenhagen, Casablanca, Durban, et al.
