YOG boosts tourism

THE number of tourists to Singapore last month shot up 18 per cent compared to August last year, due in part to the Youth Olympic Games.

The 996,000 arrivals set a record high for August, the ninth straight month of record monthly visitor arrivals.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB), in releasing its monthly figures, also attributed the growth to the pull of the two integrated resorts (IRs) and the continuing strength of the Asian economy.

However, the arrival numbers fall shy of the more than one million visitors logged for July - the first and only time the one-million barrier was busted since 1967, when the authorities started keeping monthly arrival records.

Industry players are expecting the trend of monthly record highs to continue, but say the STB's targets - to entice 11.5 million to 12.5 million visitors into spending between $17.5 billion and $18.5 billion here this year - will be tough to meet.

Predictions had been that the target would be met or even exceeded, but now the tourism sector is heading into the relatively quieter months of October and November and no major events are on the calendar, noted National Association of Travel Agents Singapore chief executive Robert Khoo.

I am looking for the official stamps & cancellations here in Singapore ?

Regarding the stamps, i went to the post office at the ICC this morning, and all souvenirs' packs are sold out... they just have 2 remaining type of stamps...

But they have no idea about the commemorative cancellations ?

Do someone could help me to find those ????

Memorabilia !

Just looked at CTV's website and didn't find anything. If you click on the Olympics button/tab all it brings up is CTV's online Olympic store which is still trying to sell Vancouver 2010 merchandise. I looked around in the sports section and couldn't find anything. Haven't checked TSN yet. Even though CBC currently doesn't have the rights, I looked thru their amatuer sports section but found nothing.

If they want this event to stick around, the IOC better shop it around to the media. If it wasn't for Gamesbids, I wouldn't have even known that this event was on.

The six-team format was proposed by FIFA with representatives from each continent. Unlike the Olympic games, there are no qualifying matches for the final tournament.

Singapore Football Association (FAS) is hopeful that the YOG Football Tournament will “provide a rare opportunity for Singaporeans to showcase their progress” to the world.

It is highly unlikely that the YOG soccer tournament will attract much attention among Singapore soccer fans, let alone the global audience.

If this is the second option, i am thinking they are wrong... OK, no reference to date, but they are writing the history... and i am now convinced that YOG have a future....

Just found out thru the Twitter. And my event manager for modern pentathlon has told me that BBC and NBC will have the coverage as well.

Sato, 18, edged out Australian Ellie Salthouse and American Kelly Whitley. The athletes swam 750 meters, cycled 20 kilometers and ran 5 kilometers Sunday through Singapore's East Coast Park.

The triathlon started the 12-day event which will feature 3,600 athletes ages 14 to 18 from 204 countries competing in 26 sports across the Asian city state.

There will be more medals Sunday in fencing, swimming, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling.

There was a pre-show for the audience between 7.30pm to 8.10pm. The whole world will start watching Singapore from 8.00pm, and then the 10 minutes countdown was started after that.

A song that globally known will be played in between, and might make you smile from heart.

It seems that some of the ceremony segments had been shorten, as some performance we really did not know what they wanted to express. Screen was purposely been distorted as well.

In this rehearsal, we couldn't watch some of the videos, as they just putting the word like "DNA video playing", "band playing", blah blah blah...

The segment of displaying the Olympic Rings was not shown. They might just want to keep the secret until 14 August.

Of course the most traditional part of the Olympic Ceremony could not be missed. 205 NOC flags were matching in, followed by the Olympic flag. The audience cheered and shouted whenever the countries that just played in 2010 FIFA World Cup, especially Spain! Haha! First time hear the live Olympic Anthem, feeling very nice.

The most interesting part were the speech part. The reprsentatives of "Jagge Rouge" and "SYOCOG CEO" just pronouced "Speech Start, Speech End". We all laughed and clapped. Haha!

There was no firework on the rehearsal night, kind of dissapointed.

In the meantime, the transportation rehearsal also been carried out in between the YOG Village (in NUC, west part of Singapore) to Marina Bay. Thus, we saw lots of purple YOG buses lining up before the ceremony begin.

On March 2009, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that torch relays for all future Olympic Games will be held within the host city.

However, an exception was made for the first Youth Olympic Games. In order to connect the youth of the world to the Olympic movement, SYOGOC was granted the honour of bringing the first Youth Olympic Flame to five continents.
