  4. Because they know that those people are actually able to do a proper job mostly and not just want to play the underlings in a feudal system. If they had them in the IOC, the rest of that gang would look the clueless, often grifting, people that many of them (well-proven) are.
  5. What Prince Christian? The first Greek king was Otto of Bavaria, brother to the Bavarian king at the time from the Wittelsbacher family (and uncle to famous Ludwig II of Neuschwanstein fame). He was deposed and replaced by a Danish prince indeed whose birth name was William but changed to George when ascending the Greek throne.
  6. I get it. Merci beau coup, sebastien. Prince George was a compromise candidate. Says much about Greek history and character. When they were a fractured and rather primitive society, yet in ruling Egypt, they were able to impose their more "western" ideals over a semi-sophisticated but really backward society. Yet many centuries later when they held their destiny in their own hands, they were still too parochial to pick one from their own. And then they eventually kicked out the family that had been artificially installed but they revered for years. Ah, the vagaries of history. P.S. Might it have to do that the outside world always called them Greeks but in their souls, they consider themselves the Hellenes and citizens of Ellas? Surely, don't call me Shirley!!
  7. I have a bachelor's degree in history and I took a course on contemporary European history, but it's starting to be a long time ago. I still have some memories that we were talking about the weakening of the Ottoman Empire, including the independence of Greece. We must "remember" that the War of Independence took place from 1821 to 1829. We were then barely at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and the remaining powers were especially preoccupied with killing any idea of a republic in Europe. So already, on Greece, when the European countries saw what was happening, they said to themselves "it could be interesting to weaken the Ottomans but out of the question of seeing a Republic re-emerge in Europe". Don't forget that in the 1820s, the main concern of the main European powers was to consolidate the new world order, therefore preserving at all costs the image of the monarchy in general. In the end, the European powers ended up supporting the Greek independence fighters, but on the condition that the new state took the form of a monarchy. Then, yes, in the beginning there were attempts to have a ruler or regent of Greek or Byzantine origin. There were the Greeks who had sought to see if there were any Palaiologos who had survived (the last dynasty to rule the Byzantine Empire; which is, must not forget, mainly of Greek culture at the base). It didn't work out. During the Greek War of Independence, those who ruled the country were Greeks. They were not kings, they were sort of governors, but they were Greeks who ruled the "country". Except that as the years passed, the independence factions became more opposed to each other, to the point that in 1831 one of these governors was assassinated. In short, at one point, the tension between the different Greek factions was so great that putting a Greek at the head of state, once its independence had been definitively acquired, potentially risked leading the country towards civil war. This worried the Western powers who nevertheless supported the country militarily and in a certain way acted as guarantor for the country. It was not acceptable for them to take the risk that the country would collapse as soon as its independence had been acquired, even though they had invested resources to support the separatists. And so they ended up imposing on the Greeks a sovereign of foreign origin; and if possible, who is not from the royal family of the main European powers. Reason why it was a sovereign of Bavaria who was elected king of Greece in 1832. (I'm trying to summarize a little, I hope I've remained factual without making any mistakes)
  8. Ay yay yay! But history is against that happening. Except for Killy I think, none of the heads of very successful COJOs (not Ueberroth, Billy Payne (Atlanta '96), Mitt Romney, Gianna Daskalaki, etc.) were absorbed into the IOC. Even Coe hasn't been fully accepted. The IOC core I think gets defensive and don't really want them within their ranks.
  9. Too bad we don't have any Greek members here -- but since Greece is in the forefront of our topics here, I have this quandary puzzling me. So, 2800 years ago, the Ptolemies ruled over the ancient Egyptians but towards the end of the 19th century -- after what we sort of know today as "modern Greece" shook off the Ottoman yoke from their islands, they THEN had to import a Danish royal family to rule over them? Huh? Doesn't compute. They were powerful enough to rule over another country pre-BC but then flash-forward 15-18 centuries later, they could not find the appropriate "rulers" from their ranks so much so they had to import ANOTHER country's cast-off prince?? That cannot be the "glory that was Greece"??
  10. I have a dream. (Tony Estanguet who becomes the next president of the IOC to see your reaction afterwards; sorry for Coe, but we have revenge to take on 2005)
  11. What do you guys want Bach (or whomever is in that position) to do? If there's anyone in the Olympic echelons I question, it's Tony Estanguet and his impractical, megalomaniac dreams. As if someone else in place of Bach would handle things differently.

  13. Apologies for coming off xenophobic, it was an offhand comment. By yeah, my sincere apologies. I love Germany/Germans.
  14. The „tubby Kraut“ bit was really quite unnecessary. There‘s many ways to describe Fencing 1976 without using stereotypes of a country where he‘s not even well-regarded anyway.
  15. Amen! His way of trying to turn the Olympic movement into some kind of Holy See / UN type body is nauseating. Can't wait for the condescending platitudes about peace and harmony from a tubby Kraut at the Opening Ceremony of Paris 2024 while the world is in turmoil.

  19. Oh, did I mention that the SKY Sports New Zealand Paris 2024 Olympics URL also contains SKY NZ's Paris 2024 New Zealand athlete-centric promo down below? NOAH EAGLE IS TIPPED TO CALL TEAM USA MEN'S AND WOMEN'S PARIS 2024 OLYMPIC BASKETBALL GAMES AS ITS PLAY-BY-PLAY VOICE STARTING JULY 28 VERSUS SERBIA (THE MEN) FOR NBC UNIVERSAL'S PARIS 2024 COVERAGE He seems to be having a banner year as a sportscaster for his young age. For one thing, he already called the kid and slime-centric Nickelodeon Super Bowl LVIII alternate broadcast this February that helped CBS/Paramount/TelevisaUnivision have the most watched USA TV viewing numbers since the 1969 moon landing. As well as a top-five men’s college basketball matchup, Notre Dame against Ohio State in football, and the Cleveland Browns vs. Houston Texans AFC Wild Card game. For those who don't know about him, he's basically a chip off the old block from his legendary dad Ian Eagle, who just came off making his debut as CBS/Turner Sports Final Four play-by-play guy a couple of weeks ago and also does that same capacity for the Brooklyn Nets and Westwood One Sports select NFL football games--and obviously couldn't be any more proud of Noah. Previously did 3x3 basketball in its Summer Olympic debut for NBC during Tokyo 2020. Was announced right off when the first 11 Team USA basketball players were announced. Here's some more URL articles about him on this: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2024/04/17/noah-eagle-nbc-paris-olympics-usa-basketball/73357620007/ https://www.the-sun.com/sport/11118441/nbc-broadcasting-change-paris-2024-olympics-noah-eagle/ SABC's 2-minute Paris 2024 promo for its upcoming Paris 2024 coverage presentation that arrived at the 100-day mark. 21. Yup, I like this guy. He seems to be just the right level of crazy. 22. Olympics are the perfect occasion to discover a country. So, here's one of our traditions: the dictation. Used to torture children teach orthography and grammar in schools, it is also practiced by people of all ages for fun. Of course, one has been organized to celebrate the Games, gathering 3000 people on the Champ-de-Mars and broadcasted on prime time TV.
  23. A new batch of 250000 tickets has been released to mark the 100 days to go. It is the last time tickets are added for all sports so for most of them, it's the last chance to buy tickets (some are already sold out). Still the same website: tickets.paris2024.org
  24. True. But this one will be fresher. At least the PRC was able to counter possible protest moments with their own supporters bused in.
  25. It is, I've been saying that all along that's what it's all about. That's what Coates basically means when he said "it's his job to protect the Olympic Brand. And he'll do that at all costs". There was even an interview with Quirk & the Australian anchor who was sitting in asked him; what does 'whatever it takes' even mean? But Quirk never really had an answer for that. One thing it doesn't mean, that it's really about preserving cost. Cause obviously now, as long as the spending isn't directly connected to the Olympics, B&C don't really care what a city does. If the Gabba rebuild hadn't turned into the political sh!tfest that it did, B&C wouldn't have batted an eyelash about it, & it'd most likely still would be moving forward. Because it wasn't really 'they', but Coates who chose. Brisbane to him was like Barcelona to Samaranch. He even said that he was butt hurt when Brisbane lost the 1992 bid, & that he had "unfinished business" when it came to Brisbane. So the spin that choosing them was so that they could be a "model" for other medium-sized cities to follow is just that, spin. Cause it what IOC universe (other than a JC one), would a gamma-city (& in a relatively smallish country that already hosted not so long before, relatively speaking) with so much to build in such a short time, would ever be selected to do this? There isn't one. It'd be like San Diego hosting 2028 instead of L.A. And the USOC basically told them before, thanks but no thanks.
