Cape Town announced as 2014 World Design Capital
27 October 2011 - 05:53 PM
City of Cape Town appointed as World Design Capital® 2014
Taipei, Taiwan (Chinese Taipei), 26 October 2011 - The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) announced today, that the City of Cape Town (South Africa) has been designated the World Capital Design® (WDC) 2014. The designated city was revealed on the closing day of the International Design Alliance Congress in Taipei. Cape Town is the fourth city to hold this biennial appointment and marks the first for the African continent.
Awarded to cities based on their commitment to use design as an effective tool for social, cultural and economic development, the WDC has become more than just a project or a programme. Today, it is a global movement and serves to acknowledge that design can, and does, impact the quality of human life. Icsid President and Member of the Selection Committee Dr. Mark Breitenberg stated, "It is encouraging to see how Cape Town plans to use design as a tool to solve urban challenges. I am confident that this new member of the WDC family will demonstrate to the world how design is expanding in application and influence."
For Cape Town, the WDC appointment comes exactly two decades after reaching democracy. "2014, then, is the moment when the past and the future will come together for Cape Town, in contemplation and in action," stated Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Ms. Patricia de Lille. "It is a reflection of how the city has socially and physically reinvented itself." Cape Town’s vision of design is based on socially responsible design, sustainability and innovation. As part of their bid, the theme "Live Design. Transform Life" was introduced in support of Cape Town’s objective to focus on enhancing the city’s infrastructure to make it a more liveable African City.
Shortlisted candidate cities, Bilbao (Spain) and Dublin (Ireland) also mounted compelling bids. "The decision for the Selection Committee was not easy given the high calibre of the bids that were considered amongst the final candidates," added Dr. Breitenberg. "The promise of Cape Town’s approach to broaden the scope of the World Design Capital and shape the future of this initiative, were the deciding factors that ultimately led to the city’s appointment for 2014. Cape Town has the strongest claim on a new chapter for Icsid as the World Design Capital. The story of transformation is about sustainability, urban development and embracing a global community in light of its drive to improve its social and economic environment. We expect tangible benefits will be reaped to help reposition Cape Town on an international scale."
Cape Town is a growing and vibrant city, where design has for decades been a significant factor in its desire to build an open city. The marriage of need and innovative design has resulted in unique solutions to address the issues of a developing city. Design in Cape Town is also reaching beyond city limits by aspiring to become the design hub for South Africa and for the African continent.
Ms. De Lille concluded her acceptance of the WDC designation by saying, "We are grateful for the World Design Capital bid process and title. It has helped to bring different initiatives together and has made us realise that design in all its forms, when added together, creates human and city development. We look forward to learning from other cities that are using design as a tool for transformation, including designated cities Torino, Seoul and Helsinki and our fellow shortlisted cities, Dublin and Bilbao. We are honoured to have been considered with them."
The City of Cape Town will follow the examples past World Design Capitals to develop an engaging programme for 2014.

EITBA delegation from the World Design Capital (WDC) Organising Committee has been visiting Bilbao over the last few days in order to experience first hand the process of urban regeneration which the city has undergone, and the important role played by design in improving competitivity and the quality of life in Bilbao, Biscay and the Basque Country as a whole.
The delegation is made up of professor Martin Darbyshire, cofounder and Director General of the Tangerine Design and Innovation Consultancy, and Dilki de Silva, Secretary General of the International Council of Societies of International Design (ICSID).
The members of the organisation committed assessed the support given by the Basque Government to the projects presented by Bilbao. During a press conference given in the Biscay capital on Wednesday, the members described as "impressive" the urban development experienced by Bilbao during the last few years. Martin Darbyshire also pointed out the sense of excitement and "unity" that could be felt among the the team behind the project for Bilbao's candidacy to win the award.
Representatives from the Organisation Committee arrived in Bilbao on Monday afternoon and spent Tuesday and Wednesday morning getting to know the different plans and actions on which Bilbao's candidacy to become World Design Capital are based. The Guggenheim Museum, the Iberdrola Tower, the Palacio Euskalduna, and new university buildings at Abandoibarra (the UPV's auditorium and the library at Deusto), the cultural and leisure centre AlhóndigaBilbao, the Bilbao Exhibition Center, BilbaoArte, the sports factilities of Miribilla (Bizkaia Fronton and the Bilbao Arena) the Sea University and Underwater Bodega of Plentzia are just some of the places visited by the respresentatives of the committee.
Following their visit to Bilbao, both members of the WDC were scheduled to fly to Dublin, the other city which, along with Cape Town (South Africa) is competing with Bilbao to achieve the international award.
Bilbao, finalist city
Bilbao was successfully shortlisted by the WDC Selection Committee to become World Design Capital for the year 2014, along with Cape Town and Dublin, from among 56 cities in 24 different countries.
The World Design Capital (WDC) Selection Committee will visit all three cities before giving its final verdict on 26th October during the 2011 International Design Alliance (IDA) Congress in Taipei, Taiwan (Chinese Taipei).
The title of World Design Capital is designated to a city in recognition of its accomplishments in using design "as a catalyst for development and reinvention," and for promoting urban regeneration to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.
It is awarded by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, based in Montreal (Canada), to a different city every two years. It was first established in 2008, when it was awarded to the Italian city of Turin. Since then the title has been held by Seoul (South Korea) and Helsinki (for 2012).
Bilbao presented its candidacy last April to become International Design Capital of 2014. It received backing from the three political institutions mentioned by Azkuna, as well as from other bodies and firms associated with urban design and national and international figures such as Spanish Ministers Miguel Sebastián and Trinidad Jiménez, designer Philippe Starck and architects Norman Foster (who designed the city's metro system) and Toshiko Mori.
AFCON 2013: Libya

SA could host 2013 Afcon

South Africa's chances of being called upon to act as an emergency host for the 2013 African Nations Cup have been given a major boost by the successful hosting of the African Youth Championship in Soweto over the last two weeks.
Confederation of African Football officials said there was an increasing likelihood South Africa might be asked to step in again to replace Libya as they did for the Under-20 event.
Libya's hosting of the 2013 Nations Cup is under threat because of the civil war in the North African country which is battering the country's infrastructure.
The next Nations Cup will be co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon next year but after that it will switch from every even year to every odd year.
Libya host the 2013 event, followed by Morocco in 2015 and South Africa in 2017.
CAF executive committee member Almamy Kabele Camara said there would be no immediate decision on future of the 2013 Nations Cup in Libya but his organisation would continue to monitor the situation.
They would need to make a decision at least by January leaving just a year to prepare. If they delay it any longer, then South Africa's chances increase as the country is the only one that can offer ready-made facilities.
This is a legacy of last year's hosting of the World Cup and would make it relatively simple for South Africa to host the 16-team, three-week event.
African Youth Championship tournament director Russell Paul had just two weeks to prepare the event at the Dobsonville Stadium and has been roundly praised for the job he did almost single handedly.
South Africa organised the 1996 Nations Cup after just 11 months' notice after Kenya pulled out of the hosting of the event. Bafana Bafana went on to win the title on home soil.
Shanghai: Eye on Shangia - Future Cape Town
30 May 2011 - 07:42 AM
Hi all
Seems like I can't spell either.
Will be travelling to Shanghai in 2 weeks. Have any of you been?
Anything in particular I should not miss out on from an "Olympic" or sports perspective?
I know that the Aquatic Centre is now mostly complete for the World Champs but anything else I should look at?
Will try and feature most of the travelling on futurecapetown.com
