Montreal has many of the facilities - the Big O, the pools from FINA 2005, the Olympic rowing basin, Bell Centre, Saputo, Molson and Uniprix stadiums - but the politics of Quebec would make it awkward.

I think Rome's goose is cooked. Politically, it is a hot potato in a troubled times. Sure, the Olympics can spin up economic activity. But it can also create massive public debt. And that's one of Italy's biggest problems. They'll look at Athens and they'll look at Beijing. The Greeks are in a major crisis and no doubt the Olympics contributed to it. The Chinese threw lavish games, but they can afford it. Can Italy? Not now.

My bet on the early fave? Istanbul.

In Topic: An East Coast Winter Olympic Bid?

East Coast mountains and resorts are smaller and are too far from the major cities. And often the snow quality is icy.

Lake Placid may have had two Winter Olympics in the past, but while the 1932 Games were a fine size, the 1980 Games were a big stretch for them. Skip to 30+ years later and even bigger Olympics in cities like Salt Lake, Torino, Vancouver or countries like Russia and Korea that place the Games as national brand and status building events (something the US doesn't get from the Olympics) and you have a very difficult time going back to Lake Placid.

Odd...never thought of it for this section, but was kinda wondering when Van was shutting down - almost two years now and usually they shut it down a few months after the games end. Given the major face lift, would have thought both would have closed.
