Michael Johnson Not Really Thrilled with "Plastic Brits"

12 January 2012 - 05:27 PM

Athletes like Cuban-born Yamile Aldana are justifiable in his criticisms. This is a woman who was with Cuba, Palestine, and the Sudan while competing. I remember a Sports Illustrated article about her and the concerns nation hoppers brought upon the IOC. That is very much reminds me of how Qatar tried to buy soccer players' citizenship, usually Brazilians, to join the national team. Or even the Bulgarian weightlifters. But when its someone who married a Brit or more to Britain to live, or have dual citizenship, there should not be any problems. He has to keep in mind Britain's developments in sports where they are not really strong in already like handball, fencing, and judo, the talent pool deepens and makes them competitive internationally in an instant. Some of these athletes may not make their own teams in some sports due to the pecking orders there. Understandably, some British athletes will be upset over this; there's also the pecking order issue. If it was just native-born Brits as readers would like as it stands, it will take years for them and the talent level to get good, if at all. I'd be keen to what he thinks about Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng, who is Sudanese but left with his family to Britain to live and learned basketball and reps for Team GB. Johnson does acknowledge the rules Dutch athletics coach for Great Britain Charles van Commenee abides by. If they really want to reduce this, why not invest in the younger athletes in the many sports and make them better? But that's not an overnight change.
