Egypt Football Riot: Huge Toll

Terrible news ...

Egypt football violence has killed 73 spectators, military planes rescue players and injured

AT least 73 people were killed in fan violence after a football match in the city of Port Said, the health ministry said, as Egypt struggled with a wave of incidents linked to poor security.
A security official said the violence erupted as soon as the referee blew the final whistle. Fans of Al-Masri, which beat Al-Ahly 3-0, invaded the pitch and began to throw rocks, bottles and fireworks at the Al-Ahly fans.
"The death toll, as a result of the unrest after the match between Al-Ahly and Al-Masri, has reached 73," deputy health minister Helmy al-Efni said.
Egypt's military ruler, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who took power when veteran president Hosni Mubarak was ousted by a popular uprising in February, has sent two military planes to Port Said to fly out the players and the injured, state television reported.
The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest political force, accused Mubarak supporters of instigating the football violence.
"The events in Port Said are planned and are a message from the remnants of the former regime," said MP Essam al-Erian in a statement on the Islamist group's Freedom and Justice Party website.
Medics said some of the deaths were the result of stab wounds and that the death toll could rise even further as ambulances continued to ferry in the injured from the stadium.
Shops in the northern city of Port Said, which sits at the entrance to the Suez Canal, shut their doors as private cars helped to shuttle the injured across the city to hospitals.
Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmud has ordered an immediate investigation into the violence, state television reported.
Parliament speaker Saad al-Katatni, a member of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood, said that the People's Assembly would hold an emergency session at 8pm AEDT to discuss the violence.
Newly elected liberal deputy Amr Hamzawi has called for the immediate sacking of the interior minister as well as the governor and security chief of Port Said.
State television broadcast footage of chaos on the pitch, with fans running in all directions, as photos of bleeding players circulated on the Internet.
Gunfire was also reported on the main road leading to Port Said from Cairo.
In the capital itself, a fire broke out at Cairo Stadium during the first half of a match between Zamalek and Ismaili clubs, prompting officials to cancel the fixture.
Emergency services managed to bring the blaze under control, a security official said.
Since last February's ousting of Mubarak, Egypt has seen sporadic and sometimes deadly unrest coupled with a sharp rise in crime, linked to the scarcity of the unpopular police, who were heavily criticised for their crackdown on protesters during the uprising.
Earlier on Wednesday, gunmen raided a money transfer company in Cairo, state news agency MENA reported, bringing to five the number of armed robberies in less than a week in a country previously unaccustomed to such incidents.
In the capital, with its population of 20 million, crimes such as car theft have also became more widespread over the past 12 months.

Christian group outraged by same-sex relationships in Star Wars: The Old Republic

FORGET Death Stars and the dark side - the biggest threat in the Star Wars universe is, apparently, homosexuality.
US Christian group the Family Research Council has hit out at the developers of video game Star Wars: The Old Republic for allowing game characters to have same-sex relationships.
Bioware has recently published a same-sex romance component update for the multiplayer online game after receiving complaints from gamers.
The decision has caused outrage after BioWare said in 2009 that “gay” and “lesbian” don't exist in the Star Wars universe.
Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council in Washington said Star Wars gamers have “already gone to the dark side”.
“In a new Star Wars game, the biggest threat to the empire may be homosexual activists!” Mr Perkins wrote on the organisations website.
“Since the announcement, homosexuals have been celebrating the news, but parents sure aren't. Their kids will be exposed to this Star Warped way of thinking.
“You can join them by logging on and speaking up. It's time to show companies who the Force is really with!”

Many gamers posted on the Star Wars: The Old Republic that they welcome the new update.

“Bioware has a long history of having romance-able companions for both heterosexual and homosexual preferences, and there is absolutely no reason for them to not do the same here,” a gamer using the character Auricelia wrote.

Gamer Voiicu said: "If I want to be gay on one toon and straight on another then thats my prerogative. There never should have been a discrimination between the two in the first place."
Star Wars: the Old Republic, which launched in December in the US, is one of the most expensive games ever created, with Bioware reported to have spent a rumoured $100 million creating it.
The game features more than 4000 characters and lets players create avatars that correspond to eight character classes, such as Jedi knights, Sith warriors, smugglers and bounty hunters.
Gameplay allows players to chat with other characters in the hope of unlocking missions, learning more about the plot, demonstrating morality and forming virtual bonds - romantic or otherwise.

Sweden 2018: Stockholm, Göteborg or Malmö

The Swedish Olympic Comittée has said that they are planing to bid, with either Stockholm, Göteborg (Gothenburg) or Malmö. =)

Here is a article about it, in Swedish... but try google translate (= http://www.dn.se/spo...soka-ungdoms-os

I thought it was silly to discuss a Swedish bid in the Buenos Aires thread, and it deserved one of its own.

Any thoughts on which is more likely to go for it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Göteborg get the nod - somehow it seems more "YOG" to me, and they always have a point to prove over the Stockholmers.

Africa Denied Paris, Munich Bids: Blatter

Paris and Munich could never win Olympics after upsetting Africa, claims Blatter

January 24 - FIFA President Sepp Blatter (pictured left) has revealed why Paris lost out to London for the 2012 Olympics and why Munich never stood a chance of upsetting Pyeongchang for the 2018 Winter Games: the African factor.

Blatter says failure to secure strong African support was a critical blow for Paris and Munich – the latter having a direct link to football.

In an interview with Kicker magazine, Blatter disclosed that German complaints about the 2010 World Cup in South Africa led to Munich's hopes of staging the 2018 Winter Games being scuppered when the vote took place at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Durban last year.

"Allow me to reveal something to you which I predicted to Lord Mayor of Munich Christian Ude prior to the award of the 2018 Winter Olympics," said Blatter. a member of the IOC since 1998, the year he was elected as the head of FIFA.

"In the build-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, [Bayern Munich President] Uli Hoeness and company griped and moaned to the point where it couldn't get any worse.

"I advised Ude that Paris lost the 2012 Olympics to London because they failed to court the African votes.

"In the case of Munich, Issa Hayatou (pictured right), President of the African Confederation (CAF), clearly told Franz Beckenbauer before the award in Durban, 'you can't count on a single African vote for the Olympic Games in Munich.

"'We've not forgotten the way you tried to destroy the African World Cup.'

"And so it came to pass.

"You will never host the Olympic Games without the 12 African votes."

Well, well, well! Not sure what to make of this. On the one hand, great story. On the other, I notice a comment after the story from "IOC insider" refuting the claim. And it IS Sepp ... I wouldn't put it past him to be stirring the Olympics pot after the IOC criticisms of him lately.

NYC 2024: The Winner Is .....

Check … one … two. Okay, hit it guys!

Thank you to Steve Guttenberg and the Village People for that opening musical tribute to the Big Apple. No expense spared with the entertainment budget on GamesBids!

And welcome everyone here today to the roof of the United Nations Building in New York City!

We were going to use the Security Council Chamber for the announcement, but the fisticuffs on the stage at the start of Round Three meant that all the podium decorations were destroyed. Baron and bgdrewsif are now sweeping up the mess before the Council goes into session again. They don't often see eye-to-eye, but it seems they can agree on one thing, though. Who they support for the Logo comp!
On the other hand, we have the Afiqnadzir/Aismanggo brothers – it seems sibling loyalty does not extend to who they support in the final.

I want to extend a welcome to President Obama, President Rogge, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary of State Clinton, Mayor Bloomberg, GBModerator Robert Livingstone and all our GamesBids members who could make the occasion.

Before I hand over to IOC President Jacques Rogge (I'm lending him my IP address for the day … no, true. He's NOT my alter!) to make the big announcement, I'd just like to thank everyone who entered and voted in the competition this year. You've all done yourselves proud – I think everyone agrees that the standard reached new heights this time around. So did our standards for scandal – mysterious identities, vote rigging, brawls on the tally room floor, votes from beyond the grave and to top it off, a razor-thin, ever changing last poll - we had it all! With one of our closest and hard fought finales to it all to cap it of. As I compose this, I still don't know who is likely to be crowned.
A big round of applause to everyone who made it all happen. Also a special thanks to Scotguy for pestering me long enough to bite the bullet and get the comp going, to Citius Altius Fortius as my sounding board when I had to make some tough calls, to intoronto for help in Rotorua in tallying the Christchurch short round votes, and to all those who posted their evaluations of the designs.

And I'd ask Prince Albert and Mr Bubka to both sit back down again. Question time is over …

And that's it from me. It's over to the President of the International Olympic Committee, the Big Belgian Waffle himself, Monsieur Jacques Rogge, to announce the verdict.

*Applause*

Jacques Rogge: Mesdames et Monsieurs, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Bienvenue a Man'attan, New York City!

I am always 'appy to see zee spirit of Olympism inspire our youth to beecome involved in endeavours to make zee souls soar 'igher. Sir Rols: Thank you President Rogge, and congratulations to our Gold Medallist Paul winning our latest Logo comp.

Whoa! What a final! And everything still in play to the last moment, with a see-sawing battle to the finish. But there can only be one victor, and it seems, with his fifth title here, there really is a Paul dynasty. As RobH put it, a true GamesBids Logo Legend. Well done and well deserved!

But, seriously, either of the final two would have been worthy victors. I actually thought RobH would win through at this time yesterday. And when I woke up this morning and then made my way to work, I really pondered long and hard who I'd vote for if I had to. I decided, but that will remain ever a secret. Both though were simply spectacular entries. I trust we'll see both of you here again next time to try and extend your run of Logo Titles.

The final, incredibly close, count, with only two three two votes separating them and a lot of last-minute declarations, was:

Paul: 19
RobH: 16 17

Before I welcome Paul and RobH to come to the podium for the winner's and runner-up's addresses, I'd like to invite everyone to help yourself to the refreshments at the bar – you better be quick before Sepp gets there and scarfs all the drinks and nibblies. And I call on the Youth of the GamesBids world to assemble again in … how ever many months' .. time to once again show your graphic design talents by conjuring designs for the upcoming games of Puxatawney* and Kabul*. I'll be there (if you all want me) to organise it … or not! Each comp I always think “never again” and each time I'm talked into it again.

Thanks again everyone. It's been a treat. This is Sir Rols signing off …
