A Presidential candidate complaining about allegations of sexual indiscretion who just happens to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives who was heavily involved in the attempts to impeach President Clinton over sexual indiscretions. Hmmm

That, of course, is assuming you believe our friends north of the border will vote for independence when they get the chance to do so. Personally, I'm not convinced they will, but I suspect we will debate that in some detail over the coming years.

I don't know about anyone else but, as a fairly irregular outside observer of this contest, I find it very difficult to see how any of these candidates can beat President Obama in November. Certainly if I was an American voter, Newt Gingrich's performance at the start of the primary debate overnight would have put me right off voting for him.

No doubt Cardiff would be a fantastic host. Wonder if they would scupper London 2030 though.

In group D, actually France and England should be the favourites. But I hate to say it -- I don't think England will survive the group stage. With Rooney banned from the group stage and with all the problems they've shown already in the qualifiers, I have a bad feeling in my guts already. And I don't say that to provoke the English members. In my view, a tournament needs a good English team advancing to the knock-out matches. But somehow I think it won't be their tournament -- and expect France and Ukraine to advance.
As much as I was delighted to avoid groups B and C, I'm in no doubt that we will still face a serious examination in group D. I'd still fancy us to get through, even though our record in the Euros is awful, but I can't see us getting much further given the likelihood of a meeting with Spain or Italy in the quarter-finals.
As for the Rooney situation, I think the FA's appeal is due to be heard this week. The best I think we can hope for is that it is reduced to two games but I doubt we'll even get that. Assuming that's the case, I don't see how we can take Rooney at all.
