Istanbul submits 2020 Olympic bid file to IOC....

Istanbul 2020 hands intercontinental option to the IOC with its ‘new bid for a new Turkey’

LAUSANNE: A ‘new bid for a new Turkey’ is the concept of the Applicant File submitted by Istanbul to the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne to meet the deadline for 2020 Olympics hosting hopefuls .
At a time when the international sports sector – including the Olympic Movement – is looking to new markets Istanbul believes it has a unique offer in that, for the first time in history, the Games would span two continents, joining east and west, Europe and Asia.
It would also be the first time the Games would be held in a secular Islamic country and, for reportedly the first time, the traditional bid structure has been replaced with a new leadership configuration bringing together top government and sports officials and leading industrialists in an empowered Istanbul Olympic Games Preparation Committee, overseen by an Olympic Council.
Hasan Arat, a leading member of the Istanbul 2020 bid and vice-president of the Turkish NOC, said: “The last decade has been a period of spectacular development for Turkey; now we are ready to deliver a truly world-class Games. Our dramatically enhanced Application File is the culmination of 20 years’ bidding experience with lessons learned and improvements made along every step of the way.
“The time is right for Istanbul: we have a world-class team of domestic and international experts, with the unequivocal backing of every level of government, and a firm financial footing in Europe’s fastest-growing economy. Turkey is better placed than ever to realise its Olympic dream.”
Emphasise the country’s appetite for bringing the Games to Istanbul, he added: “Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has identified Istanbul 2020 as a personal and strategic imperative. Our unique Olympic Law ensures Games delivery is a national priority and the Olympic Charter is even incorporated into our Constitution; 87pc people in Istanbul want to see the Games come to their city and our young, dynamic population is desperate for more chances to play and stay in sport. Turkey wants the Games; and we are ready for the challenge.”
Istanbul 2020 marked the first major milestone in its bid campaign with the launch of the bid’s Twitter feed, @2020_istanbul and Facebook page with a website page at www.istanbul2020.com.tr.
Hasan Arat, addressing the significance of social media, said: “Turkey is a very youthful country. There are 20 million under-20s, and nearly half the population is under 25. We aim to reignite an entire generation’s passion for Olympism by mobilising our young people in support of the Games. Digital media is going to be crucial to that, and we are looking to start harnessing their enthusiasm right away.”
