One significant consideration (as Faster has pointed out before) though (for the 3 current candidate cites of the US west) is the luge-bobsled run which I think cost (if I remember right) some $85 million when it went up for Whistler 2 years ago. Squaw Valley 1960 forsook the luge-bobsled competition/track because there just didn't seem to be that many entrants.

So right now, the US west only has the one track in Salt lake (Park City?)...whereas the Canadian west has at least two (Whistler and Calgary). A new one that will be built for use by 2020 will probably cost $100 million then. So the big question for the USOC will be where would they like to see this huge, 2nd infrastrucutre investment for the rest of the 21st century go up? In Denver/Colorado Springs or in Reno-Tahoe? The US teams right now train in Salt Lake and/or Lake Placid for this. So where will it not be a white elephant?

P.S. Or both Denver and Reno-Tahoe could use the existing track in Park City since both cities are about an hour's flying time each. Some $100 million saved from the budget there; and no white elephant afterwards.

It was only Bobsleigh back then and with a mere 9 nations indicated that they were willing to take part. So understandably a track wasn't built and the event wasn't held.

So you're all for peeps flying back and forth for a couple of days (yes I'm aware that each discipline runs for 2-3 days each) to Utah? Well why not save a little more money and use the speed skating oval, biathlon course and ski jumps too? You're all for a mere hour's flight to another state yet not for events to be held in the region (like using Colorado Springs for example)?

They just might be. At this point, they're further along than Denver, and we know what they're up against just to get off the ground (yes, it can happen, and if it does, 1976 isn't such a strike against them anymore). But that's the thing with Reno.. I want to see their plans before I pass judgment. I believe they can put something together that comprises a realistic bid, but I remain skeptical whether that bid, given the confines of the economy and the best interests of the city of Reno, can defeat the competition on the International level, let alone the domestic race.

Reno's a bit like Anchorage, they could use a new major arena or even a new main stadium, but with no real justification on a permanent ski jump, sliding center or even biathlon course (especially in North America, it works in countries where they could use such things, but in North America it's not really necessary when you have plenty of those already), then I seriously doubt they can make competitive bids.

Any future North American games will either go back to somewhere which has hosted already, Denver (the aforementioned key venues could serve as USOC training bases, even if not based at Colorado Springs) or Quebec City (which is nudging for another try, even with Vancouver having recently hosted). I think it's outgrown Anchorage and Reno needs to prove that there will be a lasting legacy for venues (the venues such as the sliding track or ski jump have never been attempted as temporary venues in past Olympics before and I doubt they'll work in future bids (I now Benre, (or was it Sion?) prior to their failure, proposed Chamonix as the site of sliding events, only offering a temporary venue near the city if Chamonix proved too far).

Montreal! ha ha

Why not? Simply because it's the bastion of French and anti British? :P

They could simply revert the Olympic Stadium to it's original athletics tracked design at 52,500, perhaps revert the indoor pool back to 10,000. Maybe build a new legacy velodrome and use the many indoor arenas and expo halls in the city.

^^ So simply put, with no sound venues or plans or whatever (just Reno waving it's hand pretty much), Reno is in the lead? :P

So, if they DO go ahead, it means that they have basically 12 days to produce an Applicant bid document based on whatever information has already been compiled? Or has an Application document already been produced waiting approval to be officially submitted?
