Former Nigerian IOC member, Adefope, dies at 86

Lagos, Nigeria - A former Nigerian member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), retired Maj.-Gen. Henry Adefope, has died in the economic capital city of Lagos at the age of 86, family sources said on Sunday.

Educated in Nigeria and Glasgow, Scotland, Adefope graduated in general medicine in 1952 and worked as a doctor from 1953 to 1963, when he was commissioned in the Nigerian Army.

He rose to the rank of Major-General and served as Director of Medical Services in the military.

Adefope also served as Minister of Labour (1975–1978) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1978–1979).

He served in a variety of positions in sports administration, including terms as the President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) and Vice President of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Rogge announced the names of five individuals who will be nominated to join the IOC at its Session in London.

Quote

The nominees are:
Pierre-Olivier Beckers, president of the Belgian Olympic Committee
Frank Fredericks, current Athletes' Commission chair;
Aicha Garad Ali, president of the Djibouti National Olympic and Sport Committee;
Lingwei Li, a Chinese badminton world champion
Tsunekazu Takeda, president of the Japanese Olympic Committee.

Beckers and Garad Ali's nominations are contingent upon their role as National Olympic Committee presidents.

Fredericks, an IOC member since 2004, has chaired the Athletes Commission for four years.

Takeda's nomination means Japan is set to have an IOC member by the end of the year, following the retirement of the country's two sitting members. While the candidates must be approved by the IOC, the vote is seen as a formality as it is highly unlikely for candidates to not be voted in.

Li has three world championship gold medals in badminton and is considered to be one of the best shuttlers of all time.

Mexican IOC veteran Mario Vazquez Rana resigns all positions within Olympics movement

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Veteran Olympic official Mario Vazquez Rana is resigning all of his positions, including a seat on the IOC Executive Board.

The Mexican official says in a resignation letter that it was “very difficult for me to take such a drastic decision.”

Vazquez Rana celebrates his 80th birthday in June and is required by IOC age rules to give up his membership this year.

Vazquez Rana did not attend meetings of the IOC executive leadership in Lausanne this week.

He is also giving up the presidency of the Olympic Solidarity Commission, which allocates grants to help athletes from smaller nations compete at the games.

Vazquez Rana was the founder and president of the 204-member Association of National Olympic Committees.

I wonder, if this IOC member is going to lose his position in the IOC because a university in Hungary says that his Ph.D thesis in 1992 was plagiarized by him?

IOC to study Schmitt plagiarism case

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP)

Olympic officials will examine the plagiarism case that led Pal Schmitt to resign as Hungary's president and consider whether the longtime IOC member should be disciplined.
Schmitt quit as president Monday because of a scandal involving a doctoral dissertation he wrote 20 years ago about the modern Olympics. Last week, his 1992 doctorate was revoked after a university committee found most of his thesis had been copied from the work of two other authors.
Schmitt, who has been an International Olympic Committee member since 1983, could face an ethics inquiry by the IOC and possible sanctions.
''The IOC will ask to receive the reports related to this case, study them and then consider whether any action needs to be taken,'' the committee said in a statement.
Schmitt, who won team fencing gold medals at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, ran unsuccessfully for IOC president in 2001. He finished fourth in the election won by Jacques Rogge.
Schmitt served on the policymaking IOC executive board from 1991-99 and was a vice president from 1995-99. He is current chairman of the IOC's sport and environment commission, a post he has held since 1995. Schmitt also previously served as president of national Olympic committee and the World Olympians Association.
The case could wind up before the IOC ethics commission, which would make recommendations to the executive board. Ethics sanctions can include a warning, a suspension or expulsion.
In December, the IOC's longest serving member — 95-year-old Joao Havelange of Brazil — resigned before facing suspension in a decade-old kickback case dating to his days as president of FIFA. Two senior IOC African members received a warning and a reprimand.
Former US Olympic Committee president Sandra Baldwin stepped down as an IOC member in 2002 after admitting she lied about her academic credentials. Four IOC members resigned in 1999 after being implicated in the Salt Lake City bid scandal. Six others were expelled.

Boxing's CK Wu wins seat on IOC executive board

The head of the international amateur boxing federation has won a spot on the powerful IOC executive board.

C.K. Wu of Taiwan, president of amateur boxing association AIBA, defeated cycling federation chief Pat McQuaid 20-8 on Tuesday in a vote of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations.

Wu will replace Denis Oswald as the ASOIF representative on the International Olympic Committee board.

Oswald, head of world rowing's governing body, is stepping down as ASOIF president at the end of the year.

International Tennis Federation President Francesco Ricci Bitti was elected unopposed Tuesday to succeed Oswald as the head of ASOIF.

Because the 70-year-old Ricci Bitti's IOC membership expires this year, ASOIF had to nominate a full IOC member to the board. Wu's nomination will come up for ratification at the IOC session in London in July.
