Well, it looks like this topic is back again, but I will put it here instead.

Come Beijing 2008, there will be four (4) new IOC members that will be elected and be replacing the following ones below:

- Sergey Bubka of Ukraine;
- Robert Ctvrtlik of the USA;
- Barbara Kendall of New Zealand, and;
- Alexander Popov of the Russian Federation.

Thirty-one (31) Olympic athletes have put their names forward for the 4 spots here. They are:

- Luciana Aymar: hockey player from Argentina
- Claudia Bokel: fencer from Germany
- Igor Boraska: rower from Croatia
- Iztok Cop: rower from Slovenia
- Khishigbat Erdenet-Od: judoka from Mongolia
- Susana Feitor: from Portugal in athletics
- Julie Foudy: football (soccer) player from the USA
- Grant Hackett: swimmer from Australia
- Justine Henin: tennis player from Belgium
- Chris Hoy: cyclist from Great Britain
- HUANG, Chih-Hsiung: taekwondo fighter from Chinese Taipei
- Salim Iles: swimmer from Algeria
- Otylia Jedrzejczak: swimmer from Poland
- Barbara Kendall: sailor from New Zealand (can be re-elected)
- Wilson Kipketer: runner from Denmark
- Li, Ching: table tennis player from Hong Kong SAR
- LIU, Xiang: from China in athletics
- Tereza Marinova: from Bulgaria in athletics
- Amélie Mauresmo: tennis player from France
- Dae Sung Moon: taekwondo fighter from Korea
- Martina Moravcova: swimmer from Slovakia
- Koji Murofushi: from Japan in athletics
- Alexander Popov: swimmer from the Russian Federation (can be re-elected)
- Camelia Alina Potec: swimmer from Romania
- Yumilka Ruiz Luaces: volleyball player from Cuba
- Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario: tennis player from Spain
- Ganna Sorokina: swimmer from Ukraine
- Nikola Stojic: rower from Serbia
- Artur Taymazov: wrestler from Uzbekistan
- Paul Tergat: from Kenya in athletics, and;
- Pedro Yang: badminton player from Guatemala.

Some of the names here are familiar to some of us; others are unknown. Two spots could be re-occupied by both Kendall and Popov here. A couple of nations could add their existing total of IOC members; a couple of them could have one for the first time.

As for the existing list of IOC members so far, which is 114 at this point, here is the link to it:

How come Popov and kendall can be re-elected, and not Bubka and Ctvrtlik? Also, is it only summer athletes running for the summer-year slots and the winter athletes for the off-year slots? What has the season timing got to do with it?

I am beginning to wonder myself, when it comes to Popov. He, like Bubka and Ctvrtlik, have been IOC members since 1999. I have no idea why Bubka and Ctvrtlik do not want to continue being IOC members, but Popov wants to. Isn't there some term limit(s) on them on becoming IOC members? Even Rogge is slated to have to go through all of that next year, come Copenhagen 2009.

As for spots for summer or winter athletes, depending on the Games involved, that could be nothing as there are more summer ones than winter ones. I guess that a lot of the summer athletes want to become IOC members than the winter ones to me. I do not think seasons have to do with it, because the IOC Executive Board can "appoint people" for IOC membership, too. More or less, they are all accepted.

But Guardian was only speaking of the Voting members. THe Honorary list is something no one really bothers with. And just posting the way you did, would NOT bring a Nigerian on the active voting list. Maybe someday a Nigerian will belong.

No! IOC membership as whole. Not just a member but honourary member, it as effective as a voting member.
