I agree with you - I think the CWGs suit a smaller locale than a metropolis like Toronto. But then again, if it did ewnd up losing an Oly bid, it might well decide to do a Manchester or Melbourne and go for the consolation prize.

Yeah, like the likes of badminton, table tennis, fencing or archery etc are such huge crowd and attention pullers at any times outside an Olympics as well.

Anyway, how do you manage to turn nearly every thread into a discussion about Toronto. Doesn't Toronto and Canada have enough threads of their own?

Isn't the Pan Ams the consolation prize? Badminton is huge in Markham apparently and those other sports do beat out bowls and netball in Canada. Actually FYI turned it into a Toronto thread LOL.

Back to the point. I don't think 2024 is the right time.

Well, the result of 2020 could really affect on whether Africa (especially RSA) has a chance in 2024. If an Asian city will be chosen, it's extremely likely that the 2024 edition will be awarded to Europe.

Even if Istanbul wins 2020, a European capital like Paris or Berlin has a good shot in 2024 ;)

Hm, might be interesting to see how the DOSB will decide on a German bid. Hamburg and Berlin want to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics, Munich wants to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

City asked to consider bid for 2018 Youth Olympics

The eThekwini municipality has been asked to consider bidding to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
In a letter to the city expected to be tabled at Tuesday’s executive committee meeting, the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had approached all national organising committees of the world to consider bidding to host the games.
The committee’s chief executive, Tubby Reddy, had also approached three other cities in the country – Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Johannesburg – to ascertain if there was any interest.
“In the vision driven by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula in which he is focusing on the growth of school sport in our country … we believe strongly the Youth Olympic Games will be a catalyst to showcase the work being done in our country and to ensure the kind of results we are looking for in 2020, 2024 and beyond,” Reddy said.
The tournament, he said, would cost about R250 million to host and it would be jointly funded by the national and provincial government, the city, IOC and Sascoc.
“You will notice that the demands to host a Youth Olympic Games are way below those of hosting the Olympic Games,” he said.
In May last year, the cabinet turned down a request by Sascoc to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, saying the $50m (about R350m) required to bid for the event could be better spent on other needs, such as service delivery.
However, late last year spokesman for the Department of Sport and Recreation Paena Galane said Mbalula would ask the cabinet to reconsider its decision to turn down an opportunity to host the games after Durban successfully hosted the 123rd IOC Session.
The proposal is likely to be slammed by opposition parties and ratepayers following last year’s approval by the city’s executive committee of hosting the Top Gear festival in June.
The festival will cost R31m, and Durban signed the deal on condition that the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government footed half of the bill. This means that the festival will cost Durban’s ratepayers R15m over the next three years.
If Durban agreed to bid and the city was successful, Reddy said there would be no need for any additional facilities.
The deadline to submit the name of the bidding city is March 1, said Reddy.

It would be foolish for the South Africans to go for the Youth Olympics, I think that far from being good prep for the real thing it would send out the message that South Africa isn't ready for the Olympics and is happy to send them elsewhere.

It depends. If they're playing the long game, looking to 2028 rather than 2024, then the YOGs could be for South Africa what the PanAms were for Rio.

Are they ready though? How many people were expecting them to waltz into the 2020 race and practically win by default so long as their bid was acceptable. Now we're already talking 2024 as if that's already a given and who knows how that's going to turn out. So maybe it's not a terrible idea for them to think short term instead of long term. We know that Africa (and almost certainly South Africa) is going to land a Summer Olympics within the next 20 years. No one said they have to make it happen as soon as they possibly can.

well, it's a steady build-up to 2024. So the 2018 YOGs, CWG 2022...should put them in an unassailable position for 2024. Adding like 2 or 3 stadia/venue each year for the ascending commitments is a very astute way to go about this. By 2017, if they don't stray from their plans, the only competition would either be desert-blind Doha or foolish Madrid again.

I guess it depands on whether the YOGs are seen as experience building events alongside the Commonwealth Games and World Cup or rather as being the bite of the Olympic cake and once you've had it, you're done.
