 What about Germany and Russia?
Don't forget Rome.

Rome finshed 2nd in the 2004 race, and was the front runner, so it's a great bid.
I didn't want to have to point that one out nor that France is likewise waiting for its summer turn.  I figured our Madrid friends could at least figure those out.

Leipzig 2012- did not make short list (Germany is the world's 3rd largest economy).
I still don't understand how Germany put Leipzig forth as its candidate.  Maybe from a pure sports POV, it might have been a very conducive setting -- but it needs more than that.  And the German NOC, with the Munich experience, should've known that.   I mean it's like the cases of the UK and Australia having presented Birmingham-Manchester and Brisbane-Melbourne respectively.  The IOC does not like #2 cities -- not unless they are the home of an IOC president or a major Olympic sponsor.  Is Leipzig even a 2006 venue?

The point is it's too soon for another summer Spanish city -- no matter for technically perfect its bid may be.
We'll see in 2013... We all know the pretentions of Rome, Paris, Germany and Moscow, but you have also to know the pretentions of Madrid and Spain in general :glare: Like France can expect what they want we can expect what we want, and then they can be incorrect, we can be incorrect or both can be incorrect  :sleepy:
Soo... you think Madrid and Spain are just flat out better than everybody else in general?  :wwww:

Any European nation would be dwarved by the big 3 simply from all of the benefits of hosting an OGs..... European nations are considered second level.  :;):
When it comes to the summer olympics, Europe is not second level, infact it is the 1st leve l-  Europe has hosted more summer games than any other continent.

Historically there has never been more than 12 years gap between 2 European summer games:

Athens-1896
Paris-1900 (4 years)
London-1908 (8 years)
Stockholm 1912 (4 years)
Antwerp 1920 (8 years, but also WWI)
Paris 1924 (4 years)
Amsterdam 1928 (4 years)
Berlin 1936 (8 years)
London 1948 (12 years, but WWII)
Helsinki 1952 (4 years)
Rome 1960 (8 years)
Munich 1972 (12 years)
Moscow 1980 (8 years)
Barcelona 1992 (12 years)
Athens 2004 (12 years)
London 2012 (8 years)

Europe is only made up of tiny pieces that do not have powerhouse status.
But these tiny pieces (or member countries) are economic powerhouses.

Germany is the world's 3rd largest economy, and the UK is the world's 4th largest economy (based on GDP figures). The USA and Japan are No.1 and No.2.

London and Frankfurt are world financial/ economical centres, which sit alongside New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong.  Frankfurt is home to the European central bank.
Well said
Germany and the UK are small in size but not in economy  :ooh:
Economy will get you nowhere when you don't have the population, workforce, and business variety.
Germany has 82 million inhabitants and the UK is around the 60 millio inhabitants... the EU itself has more than 350 million inhabitants :glare:

I voted for (B), but only because it was the only one that had Paris as the first choice.  I supposed though that the lists weren't meant to be in order? I think Paris (and maybe Rome, Berlin, Moscow - who knows) will get the Games before Madrid, but I also think Madrid has as good a chance as any.  It all comes down to the bid itself and the circumstances at the time (IOC members personal feelings, poliitcs, etc). Why not Madrid?  I guess it just depends on the quality on the day, after all, nobody believed London would get it at the beginning of our bid...

Come 2020, 2024, 2028, etc.,  which next set of European cities would probably get the Summer Olympics BEFORE returning to Spain?

Vote.

Madrid's not bad, but for such a second level country in the SOGs any Spanish bid before 2028 would be WAY too soon after Barcelona.
