Must be hard for Detroit to swallow all of that of its past.

In hindsight, it is probably better that Mexico City beat out Detroit for 1968.  After the '67 Detroit riots and all the rioting that broke out across the nation in '68 the U.S. would not have been the place to be for an Olympics, especially Detroit.

BTW - on the Avery Brundage thingy, he was from Chicago but was born in Detroit.  So I was partially right there  :kungfu:

Here is some info on the Detroit bids about 10 years ago the papers did a multi-page article on the failed Detroit bids that included plans for the stadium, the article below is brief but covers the main details of the 1968 bid. Also you have to remember that Detroit pre-1967 was totally different than what it was post-67 to present.
Detroit Olympic Bids
What a cool citation...and from a newbie!  :wwww:

Thanks for the post ltp74...it's always intriguing to read about failed bids and how they stack up in history or in the context of current games.

All of this is in the past.  Detroit 2024 is poised and ready to bring the games for the first time to the midwest!
Wouldn't St Louis 1904 count as the midwest?

Please.  St. Louis 1904 was a sideshow.  These will be the first real Olympics in the midwest. :hmm:

Was that a good save?
Well if Detroit 2024 wants to beat those other cool contenders (like Oslo 2024 a-hem) it better do something like include midget wrestling, Boer War reconstructions and Zulu runners as per St Louis  :P

@LA84  :  Please. Compare the candidates for 2012 with Detroit. Among them you see five cities having more charm and fame than Detroit has. Ask a foreigner to name a few cities in the USA ... except those who love cars won't name Detroit.

Moreover, the USA is the nation with the highest number of hosted Olympics. Can't the Americans understand that there are some others to stand in the spotlight of the rings ? We've just had Salt-Lake-City and Atlanta is only 9 years ago. I think that's one of the main reasons NYC didn't get the votes. And now you are concerned about poor Detroit ??? ?

Maybe that Detroit was different during the 50ies and 60ies from what one hears today, OK. But then you had Squaw Valley 1960 and then came Lake Placid in 1980, followed by Los Angeles 1984 ... so what ?

Detriot is an odd city, especiall compared to its neighbore Windsor.

Detriot's population picked at about 1.2 million if i remember correctly, and is now about the same size as Atlanta, but a bit bigger

Oslo's such a Winter city.  I can't conjure up images of Oslo and summer sport -- not unless you intend on doing the biathlon on sand...

Just out of curiosity, what is the status of the Silverdome in Pontiac?  Could it be reconfigured into a Track and Field venue for a posible IAAF World Championships?
I'm typing this with a thirty-five pound dog in my lap...
