On the day of my birthday, I get to share it with an Olympian that made his Olympic debut in a very big way in Barcelona 1992. It is no other than Vitaly Scherbo, who is going to be only 1 year younger than I am today. If you don't know who this guy is, then you may want to remember his SIX Olympic gold-medal run in men's gymnastics BY HIMSELF, in behalf of the UNIFIED TEAM, which used to be called the Soviet Union. It must have been hard to get used to hearing the Olympic Hymn as your temporary national anthem, instead of the one for the former USSR. Of course, that old USSR national anthem is now the official one for the Russian Federation, but he is Belarussian from Belarus, not Russia:

As Barcelona is preparing for the 2010 European Athletics Championships, today is the 15th anniversary of the city's hosting of the Games of the XXVth Olympiad. This comes at the time, when the Spanish capital city is trying to win the bid for the 2016 Olympic Games. If that fails in 2009, could Barcelona want to do it again?

According to Catalan media, this is what's scheduled for tonight: After the institutional act a sportsman born in 1992, Yeray Hernández, will handle the fire to archer Antonio Rebollo who will light the cauldron for the third time (1992, 2002 and 2007). This time he will make it from outside the Olympic Stadium, from the exact place where the arrow landed in 1992.
The cauldron will remain lighted from 7PM to 10PM during this week.

In order to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Barcelona Olympics, Teledeporte (TVE's sport channel) broadcasts everyday the programme "Aquel verano del 92", which shows the highlights of those Games.

My memories of that week in Barcelona: great atmosphere, good excitement -- but TOO HOT and humid. An Olympics in Madrid will be WORSE.

Madrid's climate is drier than Barcelona's, which imo makes it more bearable (with similar temperatures).
