Actually, the rings may be going back up!

The center scoreboard was actually in place prior to '84.  When the Colesieum was chosen to host the ceremonies and track and field, the LAOOC was allowed to redecorate it however they wanted (including taking down the scoreboard and putting up the rings): however, after the games were over, the agreement was that the LAOOC had to return it to it's original color and the center scoreboard reinstalled.

Last summer those rings were found rusting in a storage area of the Coliseum.  They are now being restored and will be returned.  I don't know if they are going to hang them back up or whether they will be put on public display.

Yes, Kerry - I agree.  The problem in the U.S. and world-wide when it comes to the Olympics, is that you are required to have a certain number of expensive skyboxes in order to remain "competitive". Which is why the Coliseum has to be rebuilt if it wants an NFL team or even possibly another Olympics many years from now.

The Coliseum is mainly a football stadium for the University of California so it doesn't have any of those luxury amenities.

The Coliseum is the football stadium for the University of Southern California.  Big difference!!  Sorry, I'm a UCLA Bruin at heart.

I too love the Coliseum, there's something very timeless and classic about its appearance.  Unfortunately, by NFL standards, it is a dinosaur.  Modern stadiums have luxury skyboxes, as was mentioned on this thread, but also, if you notice, modern American football stadiums are more "intimate," in that the people on the sidelines sit closer to the field, even the bleachers on the upper levels are closer.  If anyone's ever actually sat in the Coliseum, the place is IMMENSE.  I've been to two concerts at the Coliseum, I sat a fair distance from the stage, but I felt sorry for the people who had the nosebleed seats, or who sat way aways from the stage.  

The Coliseum won't be knocked down, it's on the National Register of Historic Places.

This morning i was watching a DVD of 24 called 24 Inside..and they were talking about selecting the L.A colliseum for the season ending finale.

I was in shock..and i felt in love  with that stadium..i mean..what makes the L.A colliseum such a great place..it has some kind of Karma..is cool.

What do you think about the L.A  colliseum..!!

Is big..is awesome..is gigantic..is perfect..=!!=!!!!!!!???

I think the magic of that stadium, besides it's immense size, is the way the peristyle was constructed and the Olympic cauldron incorporated into the design.  

You are right about the karma thing.  I can't explain it, but If you ever visit L.A., the Coliseum is a must see.  You walk up the sidewalk and the huge arches greeting you just seem to send an aura that something important happened there. I remember the first time I visited it in about 1986, I just stood there like an idiot just staring at it - was kinda weird.

The stadium was condemed in 1994 after the Northridge earthquake.  The whole central arch that holds the cauldron up was pretty much destroyed.  Yet L.A. refused to tear it down and rebuilt the whole thing. Which is partly why I think there is such a fight now on where to put the NFL's next team, since L.A. insists on the Coliseum and the NFL wants it rebuilt to their "standards."

Outside of Helsinki's stadium, whose beautiful spiraling stairway leads up the tower to a cauldron, Montreal's, which I would guess, had the tower been completed, the flame would have been lit at the top and possibly Athen's refurbishment in which the cauldron incorporates very nicely with the new arches, I can't really think of another where the focal point of the stadium was originally built and retained as an Olympic monument. :cool:

This is what Los Angeles has propsed to get the NFL back to the city.  Apparently part of the design is that the new canopies would float and not touch the stadium and the additions to the peristyle would house the scoreboards. I don't really like the colonade at the opposite end because I think it should mimick the peristyle with arches.

Berlin set the bar pretty high when they renovated Olympic Stadium - but I think this would work  :cool:
