The Persian name was Dersaadet—Door to the Ultimate Happiness. The Greeks called it Teofilaktos—City Guarded by God; the Romans, Nuova Roma—New Rome; the Arabs, Farrouk—City Separating Two Continents; and the Ottoman Turks, Ummti-diinya—Mother of the World. Now, and since 1923 when the Turkish Republic formally renamed it, it is called Istanbul, meaning just The City—as though there were none other to compare.

Did you (and especially you, Myles) know that there was a behind the scenes documentary about the LA 1984 opening ceremony?

I just found a clip from that documentary "Olympics Challenge: The 1984 Los Angeles Games" by David Hoffman on YouTube -- with a look behind the scenes of the parade of nations:

Yes, Fab, was aware of it. When it first came out and was shown on my local PBS station, I had recorded it. (Thanks for mentioning it, but I don't like to reveal all my sources...) ;)

It's a pretty good documentary and I've seen it available from a dealer a lot cheaper than that Amazon price.

I haven't tried the links myself so I don't know if they're still active. It'll take awhile because it's rapidshare.

I finally got around to checking this out (Athens 2004 opening ceremony). The winrar files unrar to a 1.4 GB divx file. Quality is not bad. Commentary is in Greek, but it's not too invasive. Length of the vid is 3 hrs 30 min 43 sec. I guess this was from the official Greek DVD set, is this correct?

Another rare find: Excerpts of the Sapporo 1972 opening ceremony, apparently from the Games' official film:

The most interesting about it: 16 years before the "dove barbecue" of Seoul 1988, Sapporo obviously had its "balloon barbecue". Watch for yourselves.

Just found this whole series on the Korea 2002 World Cup OC. It's from a Brazilian station's coverage. Technically, the coverage is terrible--too static-y and lots of tech interference.

The ceremony...or the artistic portions...as it warms up is a WTF?? It's a whole mish-mash, jumble of traditional, modern, kitschy, techno-pop. But it's hard to watch because of the deplorable state of the clips. Can anyone find better clips?

Legendary Edwin Moses memorably stumbles on the Olympics oath at the Los Angeles 1984 Opening Ceremony. Jim McKay handles Edwin's struggles well with his commentary.
