Mayoral Candidate’s Platform Includes Taipei 2020 Summer Olympic Bid
Posted 10:34 am ET (GamesBids.com)

If ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Frank Hsieh becomes mayor of Taipei he has promised that he will work to win for the city the right to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

When he was mayor of Kaohisung Hsieh secured the 2009 World Games for the city.

Hsieh said that Taiwan has “too much politics and too few sports” which he said are “very apolitical.

He added by launching an Olympic bid for Taipei, capital of Taiwan, the people of Taiwan will have a common goal that will keep them from political bickering and ethnic division.

The host city of the 2020 Summer Olympics will be selected in 2013.

Can't see it happening. Too close to Beijing 2008, too politically sensitive.

I think Taipei has a great chance actually; soley based upon the fact of its current politicle situaion. I mean China could perhaps allow the island state to place a bid running under the name "chinese taipei" the world i believe would take advantage of this; empowering taiwans international notability and finally giving the nation some sort of international backing for its independance no matter how much china is opposed to it. i think its a good step :-D

many countries dont actually recognise chinese taipei and i personnally think that a lot has to be done in taipei. I highly doubt that they would ever host an olympic games

yeah yeah yeah..............the US does and many other do as well but realize china is considered along with he US a bully but the US unlike china wont bomb u 2 death.......for something stupid like protecting innocent people on a tiny little island that china doesnt really benefit from.......other countries r scared of china cause well the US is the only nation capaable of really facing china alone. the olympics is subsequent to a step twords independance....so it just might go right over chinas head if taiwan cooperates with china on some level !

The IOC pretty well showed which side it supports when it awarded the 2008 games to Beijing and agreed to China's demands that Taiwan must call itself Chinese Taipei. To suggest that Taipei hosting a gamees would be a step towards eventual independence would be a red flag in China's face and probably prompt the mainland to invade the "rebel province" immediately.

ok............but that doesnt mean they are on chinas side, many countries dont agree with chinas policies; but nontheless cooperate with them because china can easily change the tide if u know what i mean by that. the US cooperates with china but doesnt agree with alot of their policies...... you should reas the book china the gathering threat by konstantine mendes or someone with that name.....anyway i dont mean to blatently be a big step tword independance......or something.....im trying to say that taiwan should bid and cooperate with chinas policies somewhat......then once the games our done possibly the tiny island state might have a better international standing; or it might inlighten other countries.......again im not trying to say like have ani china demonstations or signs or something. You either understand what im saying or you dont. Chinas a bully and pushes people around cause it can! and dude just so u know by rewarding china the games that does not at all show which said the IOC is on....yeah china has alot more power, but rewarding the games is an oppertunity to anyone.......to yeah gather in the celebration of sport but also to benefit the region city area and country the games are given to. i recall that china could only hold the games if its people were treated better, and to better the city, and to give china an oppertunity; in some respects china has taken advantage of that oppertunity. The IOC can grant the games to taiwan and ok....china can bomb the headquarter in switzerland??? or wherever....and anger the entire world.....but no they arnt stupid.....now the games going to taiwan china wouldnt like that but IT COULD HAPPEN! and if so china would set some rules that taiwan would follow only some of, but they would copperate i just think hosting the games would create a great platform for Taiwan......and you know seriously think why would taiwan really want to host the games......I highly highly doubt it is only because they want the people of taiwan to be more involved in sport alongside politics........their r alot more reasons taiwan is hosting the games aside that....for them the entire reason for hosting the games is POLITICAL!

taipei may well bid in the future but i do not think that the IOC will every give them the games. There is just too much contention over the Taiwan issue and i could never see the IOC taking such a gamle and giving the games to Taipei
