Well landlocked places of course certainly are dependant on unique topography . The ocean or body of water is usually where cities are developed. Considering that the summer games are in Bejing next I would still not count Joburg out. Capetown of course would have a close area for sailing compared to joburg.Capetown is much more appealing of course. The closeness of the sea in nova scotia is the only real advantage halifax has over glasgow and abuja but sailing is not in the sports mix of the commonwealth games. Halifax also has a lake that is a rowing events dream as far as a natural body of water. Again another sport not in the commonwealth games mix.

If the economics work, a Commonwealth or Olympic Games in South Africa will be a marvelous event. The 2010 World Cup is a test run although less complicated than a Major multisport Games. Still the lessons from this experience will position SA for other events. While Durban and Joburg have some assets, Cape Town will be the place.

well i think when u have thousands of fans in cape town for perhaps an opening match/ceremony and a semifinals it will put pressure on transport and give the city experience on how to control crowds...munichs station outside allianza arena and the main station i hear was also overcrowded, im not sure how any south african city will be able to cope with crowds especiall with out poor excuse for a transport system..

It looks to me that single sport championships are really the best way to go for many places. I am sure Cape Town will cope very well with crowds for world cup games. You may feel the transportation systems is not very good but I generally find that everyone feels that way about their home town. What can really help of course is the times in the day or evening the matchs are put on. you will have problems of course if you try to sue any transportation system during your peak rush hours.

well put it this way....transport improvements will be made but they wont help...in cape towns favour is that the stadium is located at the waterfront..the most valuable piece of land in south africa and it alone gets 20 million plus visitors a year...the stadium will be within sight of the city centre..so trying to drive or anything within the city centre will be impossible..luckily the main train station is within the city centre..however they are trying to add some light rail possibly from the city to the stadium but thats a waste when all they need to do is plan a no-car zone or boulevard from the city to the stadium which is what they plan to do from what ive heard...

Wrong on both counts _ saling and rowing are both Commonwealth Games sports, it just depends on the host.

From the CGF constitution (post Melbourne 2006):
1. The programme of the Commonwealth Games shall consist of a minimum of 10 sports
2. Five sports shall be obligatory _ Athletics, Aquatics-Swimming, Lawn Bowls, Rugby Sevens (mens) and Netball (women)
3. A Candidate City/OC shall select other sports from those listed below:
Archery, Badminton, Billiards and Snooker, Boxing, canoeing, Cycling, Diving (as part of Aquatics), Fencing, Gymnastics, Judo, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Squash, Synchronised Swimming (as part of aquatics), Table Tennis, Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling, Triathlon, Weightlifting, Wrestling
4. A candidate City/OC may also nominate additional team sports for inclusion in the Commonwealth Games.

although sailing and rowing are commonwealth sports it is very unlikely that they will feature in the commonwealth gaames. Rowing was last held in 1986 and from then on african nationals in the commonwealth have fought against its conclusion in the commonwealth games because of its expenses

It's still always up to the host. Remember ten-pin bowling and cricket have only ever been contested once _ in Kuala Lumpur 1998. Actually, I've always liked the CWGs "pick and choose" formula, it always let a potential host tailor the games for their particular strengths, interests and capabilities. I've always thought it was a model the IOC chould consider as they wrestle with downsizing their games _ and there was some talk late last year when they were considering the baseball/softball issue that indicated they may just be considering something similar.

the problem for all these sports festivals especially the olympics is that you have many sports interests that can counter tastes in the most valued television and sponsorship market in the world the united states. The reason you have snowboarding in the winter games is because of popularity in north america and youth culture. I think you can get rid of Fencing and or Weighlifting. Weighting lifting is just ripe with postive drug tests every games practically and Fencing is not a spectator sport of much value even in europe. There will be some european sports bodies that will try to hang on and at the same time attack baseball or softball. I think after a while you really have to look at rating across the broad and decide.
The olympics are being geared towards american television there is no doubt about it. It would be great to have a place like Halifax be able to drop rugby, netball or lawn bowling for rowing or sailing but that is not in the cards I believe. No matter what the mix for halifax you will not get the crowds thats for sure. Halifax is classic for no shows after making a huge efford to win an event. The exception are events having to do with an ice hockey rink.
