New Durban Stadium Could Help Possible 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid
Posted 1:11 pm ET (GamesBids.com)

Durban’s new 70,000-seat World Cup Soccer stadium was unveiled Thursday and is expected to be “substantially finished” by the end of 2008 with the final touches following soon after so it can be handed over in 2009 for the Confederation Cup preceding the 2010 Fifa World Cup, reports News24.com.

According to the News 24 Web site the new stadium equips the city to bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The stadium can accommodate most sports with the exception of cricket, and is integral to an active campaign to attract more international sporting events to Durban. The stadium is doughnut-shaped and has a “space-age” design with a 30-storey arch and will sit on the existing King’s Park Soccer Stadium site.

What happened to South Africa "supporting" abuja. A new stadium, existing aquatic centre, south africa's best convention centre and a new 10,000 seater arena, various excellent facilities, good basic transport infrastructure...do we have a winner?...

Yeah, I thought South Africa had officially declared out of the 2014 race and thrown their full support behind Abuja. What's the story. And aren't all the 2014 bidders already declared?

Well I think until you have an offical entering of a bid or even a bid committee in place then you would have a seperation from South Africa supporting the Abuja efford to South Africa competting for the right to host the commonwealth games. The deadline I believe is next May isnt it ? Then you have the issue of Durban not having made the presentation of their bid in Melborune like Halifax, Glasgow and Abuja did. The abscence from that part of the process would not score points. considering that part of the bid cost Halifax $ 500,000 dollars it is not a small matter.

Right now it looks to me like uninformed press locally speculating on a Bid. If South Africa as a federal government was wanting to forward a Bid I think they would have a domestic bid process in advance of the Melbourne Bid Presentations. I am sure Cape Town and Johanasburg would certainly want to Bid if there was a indication of the south african government that they wanted to bid.

Again until you see an offical bid committee, government official or the south african commonwealth games association come out with a statement of intent this is pure speculation by a writer for a news paper.

sorry mo rush I spoke a little too soon
it this article it points to both a problem they have selling tickets for major events in durban and that a local official is talking commonwealth games bid. maybe the tardy behavoir of concert and sports goes in durban extends to civil officials . Not very reassuring for people to make a chocie for a host of the commonwealth games. that is as bad as Halifax still had not made a request for the land they want for their stadium or secured a dime of federal funding.

i fully agree with you..however its just durban thinking they gonna own the world now that they getting a new stadium..they forget that cape town is getting a new stadium to, with the atlantic ocean and table mountain as a backdrop...if south africa is to pursue anything it shud be an olympic bid..and all things considered at the end of the day cape town is always going to be the most marketable city...however i think durban is considering itself more as a commonwealth games city and well uninformed city officials who dont know that halifax and abuja and glasgow are bidding think thats building a new stadium will see many events simply fall into the city's lap...IMO its one of those reckless statements...however durban would be a strong contender...but i dont think south africa can afford to lose the support of africa in a future olympic bid...for the moments durban needs to focus on the task at hand and leave olympic talk to cape town...hehe

And Oh Mo rush that is not to put down South Africa or Durban at all. Just seems to me to be wishful thinking on their part for an after world cup 2010 uses for the stadium besides local football. I am sure South Africa could do a very good job with not much problem. The thing is we all know it is a couple of more venues beyond a main stadium you have to be concerned with for a sport festival.
A run at the olympics for cape town would certainly not be out of the question for 2016 or 2020. It is a stated mandate for Mr. Rogge. 2020 is very realistic. A stadium with table mountain in the backgorund would be iconic.
Now to the guy who thinks Abuja is crappy well hey look at it this way ever been to Halifax and view those venues for the commonwealth games that dont exist yet? Abuja to me is on top of the list as far as the biding cities at present with venues constructed, Glasgow is certainly very close and has an organizational edge with the expertise they are recruiting. Halifax is in a dream world plain and simple. Any place constructing a stadium for the World Cup 2010 that had the track surface or the means to swtich over to an atheltic field would be in the hunt more then Halifax. Atleast the South Africans have acquired the land and are scehduled to break ground very soon.

I think at this late date a bid could be mounted , it might handy capped by the factors I described but it would certainly be more creditable then halifax which is pure laffable ficton at the very least.

It seems to me Mo Rush that South Africa being absent of the CWG Bidding officially so far is really support for Abuja and it was a gesture in return for Nigeria staying out of 2010 world cup biding . The gloves could be off for the next round for the olympics for the two countires or either one could support the other by staying out again. Organized Co operation between the countries of africa will probably result in the best results for bids on sporting events and all parties concerned. I Think if both countires can sucessfully host the world cup and the commonwealth games it makes the case easier for the summer olympic games. IMO

I reckon that as far as the Commonwealth go any bid from South Africa will win....stuff Abuja. I think 2014 will be Glasgow's to loose, but if Durban or Cape Town are in the running for 2018 then they will be left alone to cruise through to the final without any competition.....like Manchester did for 2002.

i have to disagree with you..africa has the largest bloc of voters...step one. step two..asia was supported by africa for delhi 2010..step three. asia now returns the favour in hope of spreading the CWG to new frontiers...step four..on votes abuja wins..! its not glasgow's to lose unfortunately..its abuja's to win..glasgow's to try and win and halifax...well they will only eat into glasgow's vote...what is the combined votes of the african and asian bloc?
