abuja hosted the all africa games in 2003.
but the country of nigeria hosted the all African games in the 70's I beleive in lagos? It would be interesting to know how that went. I know the weighlifting with one nigerian competitor was realy a sham in 2003 and went against international games rules convention. The velodrome roof colapse was certainly not a bright moment in games history. So much for German desginers and contractors for fabric roofs which were the same people for the montreal olympic stadium roof which tore to shreads a couple of times post 1976.

well for the montreal designers you are looking at roger thiebert of southern france. Mayor Jean Drapeau and MR. Thiebert were the toxic twins of plunging montreal and the province of quebec into huge debt from the montreal games. I have a link to a couple of canadian broadcasting corporation tv shows and it is just hysterical the out of control egos involved in that national embrassment.

Why we had a French asrchitect from southern france ever design anything for such a harsh environment as montreal Quebec which the winters can get cold is beyond me. Even if they had of got the entire stadium done with the roof it probably would have been a diasaster with it colasping during the games themselves.

Because he was French!

Finally, other than the official delegations, will any foreign (i.e., Christian westerners) visitors actually go to an Abuja Games?

well considering the report from the herald sun on may 22nd
http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common....00.html
Foreigers seem to stay away from the Commonwealth games to the tune of 14,000 fewer foreign visitors to melbourne before and during the games. It seems to be a local audience with 100,000 interstate visitors coming to melbourne for the games.
Considering you have the largest population for an african country in nigeria whether foreign christians come is not an important point at all. They have about 6 times the population of australia to draw on in nigeria alone. Then you have the rest of africa which will in the coming years be coming into Nigeria very regularly at a new 300 million dollar US Hub Airport and FAA certified maintainance facility is being privately funded by irving Texas based DYNACORP. Nigerian Arilines Is now owned by sir richard branson and rebranded Nigerian Virgin Airlines.
Goldman Sachs has a report on Nigeria and its emerging economy that it predicts by 2050 will be larger then canada's economy.
The economic activity in Nigeria is very much on the rise and considering that it is predicted that ABUJA will be the most populated metro area in all the commonwealth at 14 million people I do not see any worries of foreign christians having to buy tickets to an ABuja hosted commonwealth games in 2014 to support the costs.

yes your western attitude becomes you. That would be like someone saying east st louis is infested with hoes and crack houses. Oh gosh what am i talking about East St Louis is infested with hoes and crack houses LOLOLOLOL.

I was once blind to what is going on with africa and had some of the stereotypical views of Africa. Perhaps you should talk to mathias on the skyscraper cities site. The man seems to dig up the information on that part of the world and perhaps unlike 70 percent of americans who cant even show on a map where IRAQ is you would learn a little about geography. No nine of the seven wonders of the world are not located in the united states LOLOLOLOO.
Nigeria is a very happening place right now. The chinesse are investing about 6 billion into that country . I suppose the chinesse can do that as they are taking over 100 billion out of the America economy on a fairly regular basis in th trade deficit.

oh please, spare me your sermonizing.  Once I stop getting those Nigerian funds scams on my email, then I'll probably stop doubting Nigeria's ability.

Hmmm. Well this can only be a bit of a boost to their bid:

Quote

NAIROBI, Aug 5, 2006 (AFP) - Nigeria's administrative capital of Abuja was on Saturday picked as the new headquarters of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), taking over from Cameroon's Yaounde.
At a two-day meeting to deliberate on plans for the 2007 Afro-Asia games in Algiers and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the ANOCA executive committee members gave Abuja the nod ahead of Nairobi, Kenya in the final vote.
The 13-member body also appointed Cameroon's Sone Winslow as an interim executive director to oversee the transfer of the headquarters from Yaounde, where it has been based since its inception 25 years ago.
ANOCA president Lassana Palenfo, who is also the African Judo Union president, told the delegates to ensure that their respective countries were represented by quality athletes in the next All Africa Games in Algeria.
