A Monkey King figure, one of a number of contenders for the mascot for the 2008 Olympic Games, is seen in Beijing Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005. The city of Lianyungang has lobbied Beijing to make the Monkey King, a figure from Chinese folklore, the mascot of the 2008 Olympics. Some of China's poorer places are competing to see their candidates selected, hoping that a victory will raise name recognition and tourism revenues. (AP Photo)

the panda looks a little, well home-made not done by a real marketing company or art company, it looks like someone took a panda from some asian cartoon picture and put the logo onto the appron it is wearing

If that's the final rendering of the mascot, then I approve it.  It doesn't look all that amateurish ...especially NOT compared to a certain stone idol that shall remain nameless.  (I mean even Izzy is better than Insh*tquit or whatever the name of that 2010 thing is...).

The red color on the apron is fine because RED is the good luck-good life color in CHinese culture.  I would change the apron shape a little though.

What's with the mark on the forehead?  It looks like a branding of the torch.  But why on the forehead?  THe adornment of the forehead is a Hindu practice -- certainly not in 'godless' China.

But we shall see.  I certainly hope Beijing makes up for the absolutely hideous choice of Vancouver.

Now the next question is: what is her name (as I think it is a "she")?
not to be a smartass but "that hideous vancouver thing" is the logo not the mascot. they havent come out with there mascot yet.
also the panda does look homemade with the logo placed on the apron by hand. this is probably not the mascot

IT HAS BEGUN!

The launching ceremony will be boardcasted online (www.beijing2008.com) on 19:30-20:30, 11-11-2005 Beijing Time.

* I don't know if the English version will also boardcast the ceremony or not. If you can't see it in the official English site, switch to the Chinese version. I'll post the link here tomorrow.
